Do You Need a Color Meter? Sekonic C-800 Review

Ғылым және технология

Color in video and photo is important. We all know that. The Sekonic C-800 will definitely up your game without any guessing or wondering on your end, but is it worth it?
In this video I go over the different light quality ratings like CRI, TLCI and SSI and explain how the C-800 can not only provide detailed information, but give advice on how to fix problems that show up.

I do so much appreciate the Sekonic C800, and it comes in especially handy now that lots of us are looking at using RGB(WW) LED panels. What I like to use it for is to replicate lighting that I come across such as a particular colour cast by the sun, or when I am outside and the colours have a certain look I'd like to mimic later. I will meter the scene and then dial it into my RGB LED lights from the data the C800 gave me. It also allows me to make matching lights just so much easier, including studio lighting and even gels over practicals. I am really new at video-making, but this is one investment that I don't regret. One thing I notice across lighting is the R9 values are abysmal on almost every practical LED/Fluro light I come across (except high-quality lights specifically made for filming)... Technically it's awesome, but I only was a bit surprised it was still using mini B USB, would have been so much better to use USB-C as I have no other devices with this older-style cable requirement. My second suggestion would have been to integrate bluetooth into the device to communicate to other devices such as when I upload data into my PC.

Hey thanks so much for that input! I love the idea of recording beautiful light sources so you can recreate them later, wonderful idea. And like you said, matching lights in the studio is amazing... even diffusion can often warm up a light's CCT so being able to measure and accurately match multiple lights with or without diffusion, gels etc. is super helpful. I had to go digging for an old USB cable myself haha... the positive side of that being that I don't need it for anything else and always keep it with the C800 case ;) Bluetooth would be incredible, being able to send those charts to a cell phone or computer that much faster would be icing on the cake, and I do hope they integrate something like that in the next version! Anyway, thanks again for watching and commenting! Cheers!

I shoot product/furniture, and sometimes get Browns instead of Greys in the resulting photos where leather and fabric is present. I'd love to see a walkthrough of how to use to c800 to get accurate results (whether correct during lighting, or photoshop) in such situations.

Thanks a lot for your video!! Why is red considered important for skin tones instead of R15, that looks more alike to skintones to me? Also, if we are talking about a black person, would R2 be more important?

Seems like a good tool for calibrating a computer monitor for white/color balance, but I see nobody talking about that. Am I Wrong?

Nice video, except for the parts where you are not looking at the camera. How that has become a thing is beyond me.

Does Color Meter also measure Light (Exposer) or work as a Light Meter?

To be honest I can't recall without it right in front of me at the moment if there are any settings for telling you shutter speed or aperture like a traditional light meter, I don't think there are... but I have used it to measure lux, for example, and match or adjust light settings that way.

haha, this was recorded a little while back and I just had it sitting on the back-burner while I got through a few other projects. The tree is still up actually, just downstairs in the studio now :-P
