The Sekonic C-800 is able to measure CRI, TLCI, TLMF, TM-30 and SSI. All these indexes have been designed to give you confidence in the color rendering of the lights that you are using. This video will discuss what each of these indexes mean, and how you can use the C-800 to evaluate and measure them.

We will help you choose which one of these indexes, or a combination of indexes that you may want to provide increased confidence in the lighting you use for your next production, and how to evaluate the information the C-800 gives you.
Before getting into these indexes there are a few things we would like you to understand.
First, we want you to understand the observer. The observer is what each of these indexes uses in order to measure the quality of their score. For example CRI and TM-30 will use human vision as the observer. TLCI will use a 3 chip broadcast camera as the observer, and SSI removes the bias of the observer all together.
Second, we want to explain what problem each of these indexes was designed to solve for… and how you can interpret its information to help out with your next production. CRI, Color Rendering Index, is based upon the evaluation of 15 colors, using the human eye as the observer.
The first 8 colors are what the Ra or CRI score is based on, and R9 through 15 are additional colors that allow you to further evaluate the quality of a light source.
You may hear of CRI extended, which is a score given based upon the evaluation of all 15 colors, but it is not the standard that lighting manufacturers are using when scoring their lights.
CRI was designed to score a light based upon how the human eye would be able to accurately perceive colors under ideal daylight conditions.
It allows us to examine how light sources that attempt to reconstitute daylight such as Mercury Vapor, Fluorescent, Incandescent and LED will perform. But originally it was designed to judge fluorescent lamps.
OK, so how can you use the C-800 CRI readout to evaluate the lights you intend to use.
Please note that this next section is bias toward what a filmmaker may look for when evaluating a light.
CRI is measured from 0-100. A Ra value between 85 - 95 is seen as good, and above 95 as exceptional. For image makers this doesn't mean a light is going to be good or bad. It simply a score based upon 8 very muted colors. In today's manufacturing process of LED’s, a lighting manufacturer can tweak “game” their lights to score high, but it may still not give you skin tones similar to standard tungsten or standard daylight.
Most gaffers and DP’s that trust CRI look at R9 Strong Red, R13 Light Yellowish Pink, and R15 Asian Skin Tone, to see how well a light is going to render skin. If a light has a high CRI (Ra) value and R9, R13 and R15 values above 85 most predict that it will give you pleasing skin tones. If R10 yellow, R11 green, R12 blue and R14 Moderate Olive Green (leaf) score high as well. You most likely have a light that won’t suffer from severe color rendering problems.

    Thank you for the well informative video. Sekonic C-800: How to add new Memory Data to a pre-existing Memory Title other than the last one created? All newly saved memory data seem to end on the last created Memory Title. This is regardless of the selection on the Memory Title folder. Selecting and Recalling a Memory Title doesn't work for this feature. I tried the C-800 Utility on macOS, but it doesn't allow copying and pasting memory data in any tabs. The User Manual doesn’t address adding new Memory Data to a pre-existing Memory Title. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sekonic C-800 F/W 20-11-11 (860B)

When comparing SSI of the measured light to a referenced light source (i.e. Tungsten 32k or D55) I see the SSI numbers for the referenced sources in the two boxes under the CCT measurement box. But what is the SSI # for the measured source?

  • @SekonicGlobal

    @SekonicGlobal

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question. We now understand better. The two reading you get when on the SSI screen directly under the CCT and Delta UV are the score or scores based on the two reference illuminates you choose below it. So the score in the yellow box matches the yellow illuminate and the score in the magenta both matches the score of the magenta illuminate.

    can someone help me? Why do I need the c-7000? vs the c-800? worth the premium of $2,200?

  • @SekonicGlobal

    @SekonicGlobal

    2 жыл бұрын

    If your a filmmaker your going to want the C-800 the C-7000 is able to output a CVS file via its computer utility that show you spectral distribution information in single nanometer bandwidths which is useful to people engineering lights, or some lighting designers who are trying to makeup for very narrow bandwidths of special deficiencies on certain lights with other, and that gets very complicated. The C-800 is for film makeing.

    Sekonic devices are great but wildly overpriced. There are so many different methods for people these days, that the over priced to the film pros pricing approach just might bury companies as we go forward. If a Sekonic device was less expensive, every filmmaker or hobbyist would have a device in their camera bag. So the question is - Do you want to sell a couple of thousand devices and a good profit margin or millions at a lower profit margin. I think you might crunch numbers and calculate the worth of your products to driving the price from a perspective of gaining back R&D and advertising etc, But in my opinion, as tech gets better and better - you will lose position in the marketplace.

  • @SekonicGlobal

    @SekonicGlobal

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the feedback Jim. We always want to do the most we can to give value to our customers. We do a lot in order to have aggressive pricing. With the introduction of the L-858D we included full cine functionality and its prices at $599 and the previous L-758 Cine was Over $750. Also we prices our C-800 to be one of the lease expensive spectrometers on the market. Other "color meters" are less expensive but the C-800 is a spectrometer, much more advanced tech and less able to be fooled by LED lights. Our profit margins are set based on the cost of us doing business and we do not look to make an excessive amount of profit from out customers. We believe our pricing is fair. Albeit high for some we do have a premium product that is built to last decades.
