Nah, virtually no idea... main thing is I've observed is that lots of people end up getting a masters before entering IB / PE. A PE associate in Europe is generally going to be a few years older than in the US.

you may have made a video on this already, but where do IB Analysts find the time to recruit with other companies? I'd imagine teams/recruiters are flexible with the hours you meet with them?

Usually you go before work hours or sneak out at lunch. Headhunters will generally be flexible. Teams might not be flexible, really depends on your firm. Evercore was supportive of it, but some bulge brackets you have to recruit in secrecy.

Personally very interested in a lateral transfer from US to African or Asian markets. Would be keen to hear your perspective on this and how frequently/infrequently these market to market transfers are able to happen

Asian market will be tremendously different (at least for Greater China, i.e. HK, and Southeast Asia, i.e. Singapore from personal experience). You will be shocked and I'm really not sure if you will like it. In a sense I personally feel the US might be one of the best places to do IBD in the world.

I think it's quite possible if you work to become an associate at these firms. Lots of people at BBs move to other parts of the world at the associate or VP level. I think HK is the place to be if you want to go to Asia, lots of money and great funds there. Don't know anything about Africa, but it doesn't seem like there are any Tier 1 finance cities there.

Great vids. Wonder how often MBA IB Associates stay to VP? Vast MAJORITY of Associates from MBA are new to IB.

Do PE firms / HH care if you recruit as an AN2 in a firm that does only two years as an analyst meaning you would join them after being an ASO at your bank for a year

Nope generally not, should be fine.

I am an incoming IB Analyst on the Debt Capital Markets team of a middle-market bank. I would love to hear your thoughts on how well DCM translates into a role in PE or a hedge fund as well as suggestions going forward that would help me use these skills in this role to leverage into PE or a hedge fund. Also, do headhunters recruit out of DCM teams to begin with when it comes to PE or hedgefunds.

Hey Matt, I joined a medium size VC out of undergrad. I want to break into PE and get big in there. What way forward would you suggest?

VC to PE is a harder route, I'd probably recommend slowly going up in asset size. So try going to growth first, then PE. Firms like Insight and Tiger Global invest in VC, growth and a little late stage so those are the ideal ones to target. The problem with VC out of school is that it's very network-y and often a lots of cold calling, but not a ton of modeling. You'll want to make sure you're getting those skills too.

Not sure if you're even going to see this but what if after 2 years you are promoted to associate, is it then beneficial to stay or should you still generally leave.

I think the "fast track" would still probably be to leave, but it's not a bad thing to get promoted. Associate 1 is functionally like a 3rd year analyst in that case and finance headhunters will know the difference.

Is age a big deal in IB or PE or any finance career ? How does it impact you ?

It tends to be harder to enter after you hit your mid 30's. Most people have life obligations and can't start working 60+ hours in their mid 30's and onwards

What’s talent mean in IB? There’s no technical requirement for IB unlike doctor, lawyer or engineer. Talent as in you grind all day like a brothel worker?

It seemed like that to me too until I actually had to manage different analysts / junior people. Some analysts are way, way more productive than others, i.e. more responsive, fewer mistakes, more robust models. I think talent spread is evident in almost every field.

@@PeakFrameworks I just don’t understand the utility of IB these days. I feel software engineers can automate what an IB does. IB seem increasingly useless given AI and ML technology.

What are your thoughts on corporate development at a big tech company? I have been seeing a lot of openings requiring IB or PE experience

It's a good path if you want to scale hours down a bit and want to become an expert on a specific company or space. I think big tech would be pretty comfortable too for the most part, but I personally never really considered it. It seems like it still has relatively high hours (50-60) and you take a decent pay cut.

Could you talk about the investment banking market in Dubai or Canada?

What's the point of B- school after 4 years experience?

It gives people an opportunity to build their network, switch careers, take a break, make friends. It tends to be a long term payoff where you might get better access to funding or business partners. I don't think it makes sense if you just want to stay in high finance, but lots of smart people do it.

Wait..... the top talent are the analysts who leave early? Surely the top talent would be those who stick it until MD? Or am i missing smtg here. Unless most MDs start from MBA associate

Yup, top talent leaves to hedge funds, private equity firms, non-finance stuff IMO. Lots of MDs do indeed start at MBA associate level or perceivably weren't the top analysts.

Not worth it at all. So many better options, I think investment banks will have to raise their salaries in the future. Literally everyone I know leaves after 2 years for pe,HF,tech etc.

I use Cetaphil cleanser + moisturizer and a prescribed Tretinoin cream. Honestly it's mostly the special KZread lighting :)

Yes, Princeton is one of the best schools (for pretty much everything). Tons of alumni and looks at almost every firm

no. Max 2 years then get out. Cheap labour sucks. Did not learn much and earned more in my trading accounf and ecommerce than analyst job, If you do Masters in financial mathematics or to finance masters just jump to quant role if can
