Do You Know How Fingertips Actually Feel Things? (Part 1)

You probably know how your ears hear, or how your eyes see, but what do you really know about touch? How does it work? What happens in the brain when you're poked? How does #physicalcontact work?

Thanks to #coronavirus we’re all feeling #touchdeprivation these days while we stay at home. A friend of mine casually mentioned he'd not touched someone in two months, and that got me thinking about physical #touch! How does it work? What physically happens in our body when we touch another person, or a desk, or a blanket? Where did this sense come from, and does every organism have this ability? What cells make our skin so sensitive, and what happens in our brain when we come in contact with things?
You'll get all these answers and so much more in this experimental series of #unodosoftrace! For the next week, each episode I release will dig a little deeper into the world of physical contact, touch and how it all works! I hope you love it.

The Meissner Corpuscle Revised: A Multiafferented Mechanoreceptor with Nociceptor Immunochemical Properties

Microscopic examination of the skin reveals a variety of nerve terminals including free nerve endings (which are most common), Ruffini endings, and encapsulated endings, such Pacinian corpuscles, Meissner’s corpuscles, and Krause end bulbs.

Receptors are biological transducers that convert energy from both external and internal environments into electrical impulses. They may be massed together to form a sense organ, such as the eye or ear, or they may be scattered, as are those of the skin and viscera. Receptors are connected to the central nervous system by afferent nerve fibres. The region or area in the periphery from which a neuron within the central nervous system receives input is called its receptive field. Receptive fields are changing and not fixed entities.

In a way, all of our senses are variations of touch. We can’t taste or smell anything unless tiny particles touch the appropriate receptors in our body, we can’t hear unless moving air touches the membrane of our eardrums, and we can’t see unless photons touch the rods and cones of our eyes. We only have one sense, and it’s touch!

I use sharp objects a lot with my job. Part of my job entails shipping, so box cutters but the other part(s) of my job entail assembling small communications switches (waveguide switches) Anywho, to get to the point I end up with a lot of cuts; large cuts, small cuts, chunks of finger tips go missing on occasion....and I've found you can't really appreciate that nuance of our sense of touch until you feel raw or healing skin brush up against something. Sure, the cuts are painful, but that's not what I'm referring too. Per my work, I build up pretty rough callouses. And they dull my sense of touch. To an extent I'm not really conscious of until one of the aforementioned encounters with a razor blade. As the wound heals, the fresh skin and lack of callouses amp up the general perception of touch to a level I'm not accustomed to. Again, not the pain, just the nuance of what we're able to perceive with touch. It's amazing. Almost makes all those slips of a knife or a screw driver worth it.

I thought about it! I added music in and out here and there, the next episode has a bit more. I'll have to find some good backing tracks. The thing about music is it's actually really emotionally affective. If you put the wrong music under something you can ruin the tone, but the right music can really elevate. It's risky for something so long and without b-roll. I'll keep thinking on it :)

Thanks Alicia! I'm sitting for a couple of reasons: 1. I'm really tall so when I stand the set doesn't look the same, I liked the sitting look better. 2. The "script" is really just bullet points, so when I work through them I have it on the screen and on a teleprompter under the camera controlled by the computer. I'm trying to look mostly at the prompter, but sometimes they get out of sync and the screen shows more of the text. It's just so I don't have to stop and restart, mostly ツ
