is there a difference between ancestoral altar and altar for orisha? can I use one for both?

I just want to add that without the proper information, just doing whatever you want can have consequences. You won't know you are doing something wrong without being told. One can be drawn to something and it be wrong for you, but because you are drawn to where you want to be and not where you should be, you CAN and probably WILL mess up. Like I was drawn to Yemaya/ Yemoja .... but I'm not gonna walk around saying that I'm and Omo of Yemaya. Especially since I went through the proper channels to find out that I'm actually NOT a child of her at all. I've seen her in dreams and whatever. But, another Orisa owns my head. Cautionary tale. You are right... I'm from Trinidad and Tobago of patron orisha is Shango.. I grew up catholic then went the evangelical Christian route and realise this too was not for me and started my own spiritual journey. I started going down the budah route in a way and and one night before I went to sleep I asked for my ancestors to make themselves known. I thought I was gonna see some dead relatives but to my surprise 3 women and 1 man showed up in a dream and I didn't recognize them what so ever. A mature lady with a blue head tie ask me to help her cook and I said ok and started cooking the chicken she wanted me to cook then she left the kitchen then this tall good looking man appeared wearing a red cloak looking thing and said to me if she left you to cook in her kitchen she really likes you. Then she came back in the chicken was ready, I took it out and went to wash the dishes then behind me two women appeared and said leave it we will take it from here😳 I put my shoes on and walked out. Then days later i was watching a video and the lady said she is a daughter of yaya and on that day she was the 3rd person in a video said that so i looked for yaya and came across a video describing yemaya oya and oshun and shango and instantly i know it was them from my dream. I stated research on them from my country teachings. And I thought yemaya was my head orisha but I realise its oya but they are all my spiritual guides. I am now in the process of setting up an alter in my home for all of them. I don't want this to turn religious I want to keep it spiritual and let them continue to guide me. I honestly don't think I need initiation I think I was already. 😊thanks for ready to the end

Don't add to confusion by having incomplete information that you yourself do not understand. You don't need to be initiated for them to work with you, but this is because the orishas recognize your bloodline. You are still restricted from knowing certain things because rituals open up certain access to knowledge. This is like being a prodigy as a child, but lacking the maturity and knowledge to be fully successful without proper support. And if you work with the orishas, always remember that you can do nothing without Papa Legba/Ellegua and the support and connection to your ancestors. Otherwise, you're just spinning your wheels in the long run.

You do have to be “initiated” … the confusion is that pretty much ALL people of color/African decent have permission to petition the loa because they do recognize our bloodline BUT certain secrets and knowledge have to be received by i initiation… its kinda like being introduced to a distant family member you have no knowledge of… someone inside your family that knows that person have to formally “introduce” you two 🤷🏾‍♂️

Oshun came to me in a dream with a message for me to work for/with the Orishas. I've never been initiated, didn't call or invoke her but she came to me anyway. I do believe that working with them outside of initiation is completely possible. Only fear traps us. No one initiated the first men and women to walk the earth with the Orishas.

Excellent video brother, some altars or shrines have to be birth by someone who has been initiated into it, a godmother or father, like my eshu was birth and my ogun cauldron with the tools were birth for me, and soon my oya with be given to me as well, and u said it hands down that u dont have to be initiated, I'm not initiated into it cause none of the orishas have gon to my head but some orishas want to work with me cause they see something that I might need help with or they want to clear some things out for my rebirth into the spiritual thing, but excellent video to clear some things up for people who were wondering

TY for confirming this….Spiritual work can become dogmatic because of man-made rules and conditioning. my altars have been a journey evolving and becoming more effective according to the energies I feel most powerfully around me. For example I had to release Erzulie Freda because I did not resonate with her at all. I then came into the energies of mother goddess oya which resonated more powerfully for me. You have to trust and follow your heart - it will never mislead you and you don't need rules to follow…ever 💜

I agree that everyone doesn't has to be initiated however everyone must start at the crossroads with Eshu Eleggua' (Elegba), then path must be cleared by Ogún. Then you must start your hunt with Ochosi before you can truly know who rides your Ori.

I frequent the botanica but I've yet to speak to an elder. the Mexicans that work their claim to not know anyone. I ask question it always I don't know. so I read what ever I can watch whatever videos I can. I've come to the conclusion I'm going to have to learn from trail and error.

I find that in research I am called to work with certain spirits, and Deities, it just works out that way, at different times some are more primary and these times it is important to work with them, and at other times I am directed to work with others for specific purposes. Since I have taken a break, and then came back from New Orleans I am being directed to work with things, and your videos are helping chart some new courses. Thank you. I also wanted to say that in a way when they choose you to work with it is an initiation on the spiritual realm.

You do not have to be initiated but you have to know an order and for that you need initiation.

I am puerto rican with white skin, for context. I feel no matter your race, you have ancestor spirits who can help or harm you and who you can work with. As for orishas, you have to be sincere in every interaction. I think some of them are more interested in looking out for their own peoples while others like oshun welcome anyone. If you have ancestors that committed violence you may have to consider this and even deal with this spiritually.

I'm light skinned Puerto rican myself with European ancestry on my dads side along with african and taino ancestry on my moms. I have orishas in my house(recieved through a ceremony) and they are with me every single step of the way. Theyll help you but they will teach you lessons as well. So as posted in the previous comment as long as your sincere and try building a relationship with them then no it does not matter.

I love your videos but you are giving out dangerous information if the person doesn't know how to work with the orishas. All Orishas are not like Oshun. This is not a fear thing this is having a healthy respect for the forces and energies of each orisha. Ifa is a spiritual system that has protocol and requires a specific at of ase and training. Of course spirit guides you as well. This is not new ageism. I'm saying this w the utmost respect on your journey. Some people ARE REQUIRED to be initiated due to family issues and destiny.

I would say that if you are going to work with anything you need to do research and know what ou are getting into, so these videos will give someone a start, and they need to do the leg work, do the research and talk to people, ask questions. Also sometimes people have bad experiences, and do get hurt, but that also teaches a great lesson, and hopefully the person understands the lesson. yes some can be powerful and very dangerous if not approached and worked with right.

coolintensity1 papa legba is from a different religion. Hes not in The Yoruba tradition, Lukumi, Regla de Ocha, or more famously known as Santeria. Papa Legba is from Voodoo, thats another branch/ religion of spiritual teachings that also has its roots in Africa later made its way across the western world.

I have to disagree with this it can be very misleading and dangerous. Your right to an extent you don’t have to be initiated to work with or give offerings to the Orishas, but you should be going to someone who is. The problem is that each Orisha has taboos things you should never give them or do to them. And when you do not follow these taboos things can go from bad to worst. Simply if your not initiated then please go to someone who is.

I'm happy I stumbled upon this video because have alot of knowledge to tell & also my experience with a Palo. I believe a spirituality cannot have limitations and now by 2018, all the Santerios & Palos & Babalows have bee. Praying for protection since forever. Why is it that in order for prayer to be answered things aren't unorthodox! My next point is religion vs spirituality. Religion enslaved the mine and oludumare says we are free. Spirituality is just that. Santeros, Palos, etc... We not tryna get in trouble but understand the true path to ifà is indeed trail & error. So many of you are internally conflicted. My experience with a Palo who was suppose to be my god mother was heartbreaking. She just couldn't open her eye she was too consumed by the "religion " and lost the spirituality. Plus, not her, but there are a lot of people trying to get money. I believe spiritualty cannot be contained religion is a weapon created by the romans. I've connected with the Orishas and are expanding. As far as papa legba over ellegba that's 2 beliefs. How can you encpmpass the 2 without getting to understand the 1st. I believe connecting on your own is in fact the way because it's much harder to maintain this alone than having someone tell u what's right or wrpng. Is it possible for one to work with any (or all) of the Orishas without setting up an Altar? I came across some spells that require working with almost all of them at different stages of one's financial stages. Ideally, will love a one-off thing, not setting up an alter to feed daily. I'm actually glad I saw this video...because I thought I need to be initiated. I heard from someone that the initiation costs thousands of dollars, so yea. ALWAYS give papa an offering. Pay at the crossroads with candy and bury old food from alter at the crossroads or the base of tree with salt. I suggest doing more research first. You don’t mess with papa if you don’t know. He is a trickster

Anyone can call and ask for the orishas, but its not the same as being initiated. Being a non inititiated means that you can maybe conjure up 2-3 % of the orishas power. Not very much, but thats because you have offered the orisha anything, and thats what the initiation ceremony is for. You can always offer the orisha fruits, food and other items to their natural home. Like going to the river and making an offering there to OSHUN, going to the ocean and speaking to YEMAYA. etc.

Someone who is facing constant Ossogbo in their life?? I understand what your saying, but many times only through initiation can we truly solve many of our problems, whether it be through lukumi or IFA initiation.

it's not common but some people don't need initiation to work with the orishas or loa . They will just come up in dream or appear to you and tell you what you have to do. They are ancestral spirits so they are in your bloods. I mean for afro descendant people. They can indeed appear to you as catholic saints in dreams or take the title of a saint or spirits that have similar attribute than them. it's all about symbolism because a saints images or statues is not the actual picture of the person that lived. That how syncretism actually happen the old stories about slaves hiding their stuff is a way for some people to talk down of A.T.Rs. I had for example Freda appear in dream to me in the form of Kuan Yin because I have the images at home, it's only later on that I found out that it wasn't Kuan Yin, but Freda. That why you have to start directly with your ancestors as some of them also take title of saints or deities to talk to you sometimes. Actually in vodou you have to "pick up" your ancestral spirits first, loa before you can even think of initiation...the initiation in vodou kind of open the way for a larger spiritual court, if I can put it like that but not everybody need it. I know you are not talking about vodou but I just wanted to put my two cents. lol

I think you have to be of African ancestry in order the Orishas to come to you. Orishas are from the Yaruba religion.

Sorry the only way to know for sure is to have a Babalawo divine who is owns you head. This is who is your father or mother. I have been to a bunch these rituals and 80% of the time the lay person is wrong. Here is the truth of the matter sometimes God gives you the father and mother you need. Not the one you think you are like. Case in point if you are angry argumentative person more times than not Obatala will own your head. Very true! Obatala stands next to me always and I have a deep connection to him but Eleggua is my head. Having a connection with a certain Orisha doesn’t mean they are your head guardian as your head guardian is placed with you depending on your life path and difficulties in this life who can help the most. That’s only known through divination through a babalawo with Orula. Anyone can “worship” serve give honor to and petition but how to properly invoke, how to communicate with, how to make their baths, rituals etc those are the secrets passed down through initiation.

I'm done with the saints....spirits of the dead PERIOD! The dead cannot lead the living. Why? Because the dead cannot see the WHOLE PICTURE. Thanks to everyone for your input. But that's where your suppose receive PROPER guidance from a qualified teacher. To bad there are very few traditional teachers left that are honest and upright enough to guide you properly. That's where the problem comes in in the first place. Unethical people posing as knowledgeable men and women who do not follow the traditional laws of the African orishas themselves! But mix and match with other traditions in other cultures. I am no longer interested in following the religion of the orishas( I have had a rude awakening). But I was meant to see what I saw. And now because of that I am a different woman. Or a lawyer just because you represents yourself in a citation case. SMH we better start properly reverencing and honoring our ancestors the way they intended from the beginning of time or we as a people will continue to suffer horribly because of our arrogance and ignorance. Ifa is as old as time and while your Orishas May summons you, they are leading you to your community of elders. Not true. Initiation is not the right to work with an Orisha. Initiation is a commitment to a path aligned with your destiny. It is a huge responsibility. Some people lie and take your money by some i mean a lot it is a lott of corruption within the practice but the good babas and iyanifas reputation travels.and you do not have to be initiated trust me the orishas work magic that will have you with tears of joy just respect them because they can also bring you hurt but from my learnings you were ignoring their signs and that is disrespectful because I have never witnessed anything stronger than the orishas

Hello. Can you help? I ended up following his advice a year ago and bad things have come to me. I did it with a pure heart yet I feel punished for pure ignorance. What happens if you do make an offering and set up altar space . How do you apologize / correct and reverse damage. Some damage can't be reversed and I'm so upset with myself for my ignorance.

firstname lastname find an ordained and trained ORISHA priestess or priest to conduct a diloggun reading for you, as the diloggun is the actual mouthpiece of the ORISHA. The reading will advise an ebo and behavior modification. This is not “magic” or Hoodoo. Playing with ORISHA will cause you problems.
