I'm in my ancient relic years but I'm still working on improving bad technique I developed over time - and this is one of those issues, particularly with my left hand when doing finger control stuff. I haven't seen this issue brought up very often and I like the simple approach for doing something about it - so thanks for both!

you mention that with any technique it would be inefficient to slice, however have you considered that tiny slice accompanied with a slightly tilted drum could be just as efficient?

yes tilting the drum changes the "perfect" angle, but in drum corps you need everybody to look identical so all would need tilting.
