    Love your channel(s) Ben! As a mid aged man, just back on the skateboard after 15 years, and just moved to an old house that needs makeover, I learn so much from you. This week alone, I nailed slappy crooked grinds and a California patch because of you. Where else can you learn that from the same guy?? You have the perfect combo for me! Keep up the good work, don't feel any pressure on Saturday videos, love from Sweden!

    As a professional painter we do filler first. If your putty knife hits semi-dry caulking you're waiting a long while to fix it. We do the elmers, slightly more than flush, then caulk everything. Next day we sand, clean and spray. 1 day is tough, you always sacrifice quality for speed when it comes to quick dry materials.

    It depends on your system and materials. I use a quick drying Spackle and a quick drying caulk. I prefer to caulk first as I use a damp sponge when I'm caulking to get clean lines, if I fill first, the fill comes of the woodwork. As a painter I have certain steps I follow on every job. First I cover and protect the flooring, next I caulk all that needs it, then I remove the electrical plates and cover with tape. Then I fill all holes in walls and trim-work with quick drying spackle. If the job has a closet that need painting, I apply my first coat of white or trim color to the closet while I wait for my fill to dry. I do not touch up closets, you never see them plus white hides a lot of sin. I apply my second coat to my patches on the walls and trim if necessary. I re-coat the closet. By the time I'm done that my patches and fill are dry. I sand and prime with quick drying primer (Usually a universal sealer that dries very fast). Then I cut and roll my ceilings. Then cut and roll my woodwork. Then my ceilings again. Usually by this time its lunch. The heat and a dehumidifier has been on the whole time (Trust me it really helps with the drying). After lunch I cut and roll my walls for the first coat of color. While I'm waiting for the first coat to dry I'm applying the last coat on the woodwork. Last coat of color gets applied, by now its usually late in the afternoon. I go around looking over my work, touch up with a foam brush is necessary. I remove my drop sheets or paper. I begin to clean up, sweep and mop the floors (I use a pretty neutral floor cleaner that smells nice). I clean up my tools, rinsing the brush and sleeves out on site if possible. (This whole process can take up to an hour, but your customer will love you for it) After I have everything clean up and all my gear is returned to my car, I do one last check making sure everything is right. I re-attach all plate covers, check any area I was in, check the flooring for paint. At this point I bring in the customer, have a chat about the process, give them instructions not to hang anything on the wall for at least a week if possible (Covers my butt) and get paid. I charge about $500 cash per room for a complete re-paint plus materials.

    Thank you so much for all these great tips. I just got my first home, and you have no idea how helpful your videos are!! :) There are so many things I want to fix at the new place, but I was too scared to do it myself as a female in their 20s (there are not many people to ask around.) But after learning from your videos, I am starting to get confident and actually be able to slowly pull it up! I wish I can show before and after once it's done haha. Please keep sharing your good works. Thanks again!

    Depends, Renovation/existing work - caulk then fill then paint. Something like bare baseboards or complicated window trim(bare) will get filled, then painted, then caulked. All of this on bright white base and trim, paint is always last if the color is changing to anything but white. Ideal world I paint baseboards before installing, then fill nail holes and touchup.

    Prime, putty (elmers wood filler,) sand, vacumn then caulk. Sometimes carpenters leave holes all over the place and leave them next to caulking seems. Sanding after caulking can also mess the caulking up.

    I fill then caulk for the same reason you said, in addition to if I need to countersink an exposed nail head or add more nails to make a gap smaller that's done as I go. Moving like that could easily make still wet caulk split. BTW I always use the fast dry stuff that's ready to paint in 30 minutes.

    I use the “big gap” caulks for large gaps before painting and I always fill first then caulk. The Big Stretch latex caulk available at Lowe’s tends to be very wet for some reason. But it claims it will stretch with the seasons and not crack But I always leave it to dry overnight before painting. Dap has a new caulk for large gaps too and it claims to stretch 600% 😳. It’s called Extreme Stretch and available at most big box home improvement stores, Lowe’s, Home Depot etc. It’s an urethane acrylic caulk that only stretches. Will not crack.

    I work in restoration. And what our branch wants us doing is paint the doors and trim before install. Then after install fill nail holes with what ever the installer prefers paint up the trim then use the exact color caulking. The stuff where you add trim paint to it and once you're caulked it's done. It does have its issues like it is a little runny, so on larger gaps the quick dry caulk needs to be used first.

    Caulking is just filling part 2. By doing it 2nd it gives you the opportunity to get any pieces that the filling shrunk on or didn't quite match up perfect on. Fill first with putty for the big gaps fill second with caulk for the medium gaps and for the tiny gaps fill third with paint

Dries fast in small holes and sands easy. Powerhouse by SW for most caulking, Big Stretch by Sashco for big fills.

    I prefer to do the first fill and wipe off with a damp rag. Then I caulk and do a second fill. I let dry overnight before painting. That's in regards to trim work. I will often give the walls the first patch at the same time. The next day I will repatch walls and paint the trim. I prefer to tape on fresh 'dried' paint before sanding, priming and painting the walls. It all is kind of dependent upon the size of house/job and what is ready or what will be ready.

    I start from the top of the room and work my way down so fill first and then sand. I've just clued in that caulking is better to do before paint for a myriad of reasons. One; some caulk yellows, sometimes it's not the cleanest removal of excess and it shows a year later, (different finish), and unpainted caulk, despite saying mould resistant has actually gone mouldy around the trim of a window. Paint stops that from happening. So, caulk next and paint last. And no, I don't use the cheapest caulk. Just crappy old aluminium slider windows.

    Painters putty, using your finger, wiping it off with wet or damp rag/sponge are all no good. If you can still see the nail hole after you paint, then you could save a lot of time and not fill at all. The whole purpose of filling a nail hole is so it looks like there was never a nail. Use a good wood filler/putty with a knife, 2 coats if necessary, sand with sand paper. I like/prefer your method. I don't it everyday, but I do it a lot. I'm probably the guy who caulks first, I sometimes hit the nail holes twice

    Spackle/fill all, paying attention to joints and miters that may need 2 passes (moreso with contemporary trim), light sand than caulk all and usually vac than caulk room at a time immediately so we can paint trim later in the day if brushing. Once caulked anyone I work with knows it's ready for paint and all they have to ask if the caulking is dry yet. Nothing worse than sanding into some soft caulk. Any other way doesn't really make any sense to me. Mabey precaulk some large gaps if needed though but don't anticipate painting over them caulked twice in a day

  • @Jimbo_Conn
    @Jimbo_Conn4 жыл бұрын

    I tend to caulk first (because like you said I need it to start curing ASAP especially if there's sanding to do on the walls) and fill with crackshot or (I know it shrinks but I use the pink spackle or glazing) and then I know this is cheating but sometimes I don't sand, I just wipe the areas that got filled with a damp rag then paint. On smaller jobs don't have a day to wait and come back to paint. In a perfect world (and if they were my jobs) and depending on job size, I would be doing things a bit differently
