Do the Sigma 16mm, 30mm, 56mm Lenses Work on a Full Frame Camera like A7iii / A7Riii?

It's the most asked question on my lens reviews: "Will this work on A7 body?" The answer is yes, and no, depending on how you want to interpret "work".

Hello, very useful vid! I have a Rokinon 35mm f1.2 that I want to use with my Sony A7III. What shooting process would you recommend? To shoot in 4K and then crop it on post to remove the “vignetting”? Or shoot at once with the cam's crop mode?

Just bought the 30mm for my a7c- 1.5x focal length and aperture in super crop mode gives it a 45mm range and a f/2.1. I guess the biggest drawback is the resolution drop and iso comp. If you used super crop on a a7riii or a7riv the resolution scaling probably wouldn't even be noticeable. Either way I'm gonna try to get some crispy 12mp shots

Can confirm, using Sigma 56mm on A7RIII having 18mp in Crop mode. Sharpness and bokeh are outstanding. Lens is recognised as Aperture 1.4, so sensors gets a lot of light. Bokeh on Sony Crop mode is converted from 1.4 (x1.5 sensor size) to 2.2 - but still, very blurry background. Cheapest way to have full frame ISO capability pared with 85mm wide open look. Will now go for the sigma 16mm 1.4 instead of sony 24 1.4 GM ;)

Using the camera handheld, stabilizing the clips in Catalyst You get a crop that, more or less, will “compensate” the vignetting. Same effect of using full frame lenses on the A7C but at a fraction of the price. Tell me your opinion. Tanks

  • @dodmedia

Hi Andrea, I think shooting in full frame and then cropping in in post is fine but I wouldn't want to do it with every shot. You would be better off stabilizing the camera rig when shooting if your plan is to stabilize in post anyway. That price difference will cost you in image quality instead of money.

@@dodmedia I just got and tried out the 16mm on A7iii. Was able to capture the same shot from the same place using similar numbers and the image quality is disappointingly soft from the 16mm compared to Sony 55/1.8 (that I thought was a little soft itself initially). They don't even compare. I did not apply the super35 format, but as you stated in your video, that should not affect the core image quality. This is only my first run with the lens, but I am worried its either a bad glass or not a sharper lens than FE Sony ??? Any recommendations to try testing this 16mm?

@@dodmedia Would the image quality have been better had you actually shot on APSC camera. The advantage of using full frame is the fact you get a higher resolution as you can get more pixels on a larger sensor. A6500 is 24 megapixel however APSC mode on a A7 is going to be 11 or 8 depending which version you have. Why not buy a cheaper camera if you cant afford to buy the lenses for the the full frame system. It's like buying a Porsche but want to use the tires from your Volkswagen. Is it worth it if the Porsche is now slower than the Volkswagen....Just asking

It's a good question. I own the A7III and the a6500 so the lenses were primarily bought for the APSC camera, but I wanted to see how they'd work on the full frame camera.

Hi, I'm planning to buy 16mm and one portrait lens. I'm too too confused b/w 30mm & 56mm. I want to know few things from you on 30mm vs 56mm, Except the focal length , are the any major differences in these 2 lens in terms of autofocus speed and sharpness. 16mm is 400$ , 56mm is also 400$ but 30mm is sold at 260$. I want to know if there any specific drawback of 30mm when compared to 56mm.

30 was released a year earlier so they went back to fix it's sharpness on the 56. Pincushion is handled better on the 56mm. The 16mm and 56mm are great ( I own all three)

Yeah, Using the Clear Image Zoom to remove the Vignette might be a better choice over all with no performance hit.

Yeah to me it sort of depends on whether you plan to output in 4k or if you plan to output in 1080 and want the resolution to punch into for different crops. Though I guess you could argue that you can do that with clear image zoom too 😅

I think not just focal length are crop by factor of 1.5, so as aperture too will crop into 1.8. Correct me if wrong.

  • @dodmedia

    @dodmedia

That's a little different. So the aesthetic of your image will change because you'll need to move your subject further away to achieve the same framing so your depth of field will be wider. But the actual aperture of the lens won't change. It will still be an f1.4 lens

DOD Media I did a test recently and a 1.4 apsc lens had similar bokeh as a 2.8 full frame. Apsc at 2.8 looked more like 4 fstop.

Did you keep subject and camera in exactly same place? The bokeh should be identical unless you move it further away to achieve the same framing
