Do The Mountbatten Diaries Hold Partition Secrets That Will Affect UK's Ties With India & Pakistan?

Lord Mountbatten was the last viceroy of British India and the first governor-general of independent India. He oversaw the transition of British India into two separate states, India and Pakistan, and stayed until June 1948. Some historians feel that Mountbatten fast-forwarded the British plan of transfer of power. Mountbatten’s biographer, Andrew Lownie, claims that his letters and personal diaries contain key information related to partition.

@@fredcarr3550 Nehru was used by British via Lady Mountbatten for their future project of containing China. Nehru gave refugee to Tibetian leaders and it's religious clergy on the behest of British. Soon the Dalai Lama card became a liability when 1962 war happened. They successfully made India a frontline state against China whose setbacks India still faces as in the case of intrusions in Ladakh & north east.

@@blackbaron9012 I hear you but don't agree with your analysis. My recollection is that Nehru was long dead when China annexed Tibet and therefore became frontline to India. Although many I included, weren't very conversant with geopolitics in those days, the British with all their warts and boils, could see light years ahead of the leaders of most nations and saw the danger that China would eventually pose with its expansionist policies. Do you think China will stop at Taiwan? not likely and if successful, instead of probes, it will make a great push for Ladakh perhaps in some temporary alliance with Pakistan, which seems willing to do deals with the devil notwithstanding the treatment of the Uyghurs whom you know are Muslim. We may not like it, but that in part of the world people have always been fighting. Now with nukes now available should the conventional forces of one country or the other not prevail, the danger to the world is almost unfathomable.

Abul Kalam Azad wrote, in his political autobiography, India wins freedom: “Lord Mountbatten was extremely intelligent and could read minds. The moment he found Patel amenable to his idea, he put out all the charm and power of his personality to win over the Sardar. In his private talks, he often referred to Patel as a walnut, a very hard crust outside but soft pulp once the crust was cracked. Jawaharlal was also greatly impressed by Lord Mountbatten, but perhaps even greater was the influence of Lady Mountbatten. She is not only extremely intelligent, but had a most attractive and friendly temperament. She admired her husband greatly and in many cases tried to interpret his thought to those who would not at first agree with him.”

It is not all that scandalous. Mountbatten was rather pro-India, to the extent that his British colleagues considered him an outcast. This is quite a remarkable thing, given that British officers were not necessarily known for sympathies with India. Mountbatten was no ordinary chap; not only was he a capable British admiral, he was the uncle of Prince Philip, and therefore an uncle-in-law to the late Queen Elizabeth II. For someone of such aristocracy to have pro-Indian sensibilities was rather uncommon. This does not mean, of course, that we invoke his name with any obsequious reverence; but our aversion to the British Raj need not prevent us from acknowledging some facets of history with dispassion.

We can't rewrite the History or History can be rewritten when new sources and new information come to light. However, again at what cost? It is better not to open the old wounds. . Reopening old scars ll bring more pain. Let the wounds heal with time. The riots, death and displacement of millions..families torn apart...changing the geopolitics. Both side of people suffered.

Perhaps not much technically. But the "reveal" factor will have some shock value (& may affect, if not color relations). Imagine if the White House being burnt down (by the British) was somehow withheld from the American public & contemporary govt (set aside for the moment, the impossibility of the scenario) & got revealed in the '50s (during the "Suez canal moment"). It wouldn't change the "reality" (past/present), but would it not provide some context-leverageable ammunition? And the US is still a case of Settler independence (as opposed to India's Native independence). The transfer of power (as opposed to seizing of power in case of the US) may also make this matter more sensitive.
