They did not change it stealthily. King George V changed the RF name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917. He changed name Battenberg (Batten Mountain) to Mountbatten! He changed the names from German to English because of the war between the two nations. The Kaiser joked that the drama Merry Wives of Windsor should be changed to Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha!

Ludvig of Battenberg wasn't forced to change is name to Mountbatten. He chose to do so inorder to sound less German, which he was. Being the First Sea Lord of the British navy, it wasn't good to remind people of his German origin, obviously. But he still had to resign. The Mountbattens weren't particularly good people. They were ambitious, not to say grasping parvenues, ready to use their slim royal connections to get on.

But Lord Mountbatten remembered ---and never forgot--- when his father, a Naval officer who was in line to become First Sea Lord---was not allowed to take up the job because the public considered him a foreign royal, all on the cusp of WWI. That knowledge of the oversight of his father sharpened Lord Louis' own senses of ambition and need for publicity. He said that as a school boy, this denial of his father, hurt him terribly and made him eager to change the world, in ways his father would have done.

That collection is pure lavish ridiculousness - people with wealth and position who have no taste and no idea how other people live on a limited sum of money (salary). Mountbatten was known for his penchant for young boys and his disastrous naval career. Edwina and he had an open marriage with many affairs on both sides while presenting the face of respectability and privileged upper class position to the masses and that to me is purely disingenuous - dishonest and shallow. Why not sell off the baubles and distribute the proceeds somewhere worthwhile. Ugh. Awful people.

Mountbatten is remembered with horror by former boys of the Kincora Boys Home. Also known for dabbling in a coup attempt in 1979. He was homosexual and she was well known to be totally promiscous. His diaries on events in India are still suppressed by the British Government. How much exploitation and robbery to accumulate that obscene wealth? Disgusting.

For a group of people who present themselves as being proud of family and heritage, it’s odd they’d change their German names. Is it out of embarrassment? Not wanting to be associated with German links? Is it an attempt to “erase” that heritage?

@ Xamry None of the above! The names were changed because the family are English/Scots as well as German (and other royal continental families) and at war with Germany The Hanovers began ruling England/UK since 1714. That was 200 years before WW1 (1914) began. The family were English/Scots on George1st's grandmother's side His mother, Sophia of Hanover' was the next Protestant relative in the line of succession, after Queen Anne. But she died before Anne died .. so her son George was next in line. George 1st's grandmother was *Elizabeth Stuart (i.e.daughter of James vi and i ... Scotland/England)

All very well, but what one should always remember is that this dynasty acquired their status and riches and objets d'art thanks to the beneficence of the British tax-payer. They were only enitled by virtue of heredity. They were lucky not to have been born in France. Their like was abolished in the revolution of 1789. One can only admire them on account of their custodianship. Nothing more.
