Discovering Prince Philip's Ancestry

Prince Philip lived a life of almost 100 years. He is most famously known for being the husband to the late Queen of the United Kingdom: Elizabeth II. But unlike many of the consorts we know today, Philip was a Prince in his own rights and you can find royal ancestors throughout his whole family tree. Not only is he a descendant of British Kings and Queens, he was also closely related to the Russian Tsars. In an earlier video I already covered his immediate family, meaning his parents and four sisters. So in today's video I will focus more on his grandparents and great grandparents as we explore their lives and accomplishments.

Prince Philip had more blue blood than the Queen herself, an impeccable lineage. Both him, Queen Sofía of Spain and Queen Anne Marie of Greece were the last consorts that were 100% royal and in Sofía and Philip's cases, their lineages are better than their spouses.

The Duchess of Sussex is thoughtful of everyone and everything that she does. For example for Prince Phillip funeral services she was not able to come in person as she was so close to her due date with giving birth to Lilibet she sent a thoughtful wreath Meghan and Harry's purple wreath was pictured inside St George's Chapel The wreath, which was accompanied by a handwritten note from the Duchess, was made up of a variety of bright purple and blue locally sourced flowers - each of which had been thoughtfully selected. Created by one of their favourite florists, Willow Crossley, the royal couple specifically asked for the wreath to include acanthus mollis (bear's breeches), the national flower of Greece to represent Prince Philip's heritage, and eryngium (sea holly) to represent the Royal Marines. The wreath also featured campanula to represent gratitude and everlasting love, rosemary to signify remembrance, lavender for devotion, and roses in honour of June being Philip's birth month But instead everyone wants to hate in her because the wreath was different from all the others.

Uncle! not cousin. Philip's father Andrew, was the first cousin of king George V equally of Czar Nicolas the last Czar. Queen Alexandra was Andrew's father ,George I of Greece, sister and so was Dagmar the mother of the last Czar. That makes his son Prince Philip the duke of Edinburgh, second cousin to Edward and Albert- king George vi, the queen Elisabeth's father. So he's an uncle not a cousin. He was king Paul's first cousin therefore king Constantine, queen Sofia of Spain, Princes Irene of Greece are second cousins of king Charles, Anne, Edward and Andrew. And so is crown Prince Alexander of Serbia, as well as through the grandma Olga the other Prince Alexander of Serbia. and late deposed king Michael of Rumania through his mother Helen of Greece 1st cousin of Prince Philip. Equally first cousin was Marina of Kent mother of Michael, Alexandra and Edward. Equally, he was the first cousin of Prince Peter and Princes Eugenia ,the children of Prince George of Greece and Maria Bonaparte , making Charles II a second cousin to bacteriologist Tatiana Ratziwil, daughter of Eugenia Ratziwil.

Actually, I'd say that Philip's British side was very little of his heritage, and he was definitely NOT Greek by ethnicity at all. His main ancestry was German, Danish (also mainly German) and Russian. None of his relatives were actually Greek. They descended from the Danish King Christian IX on the male side. His grandfather was the second son of King Christian IX, who would not have inherited the throne. When the Greek people overthrew King Otto, they decided they wanted a new king, so their assembly sought out young 17 year-old Prince William of Denmark (who later became Philip's grandfather) as being the one they preferred to take over the monarchy in Greece, so they invited him to do so, and he accepted, and became known as King George I of the Hellenes. Consequently, his descendants in the male line, including Philip, were styled as Princes of both Greece and Denmark. They did not lose their Danish royal titles, having been male line descendants of the King of Denmark. Actually, Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth had a closer relative in common than Queen Victoria as they were both descendents of King Christian IX of Denmark. Philip's paternal grandfather King George I of the Hellenes (Greece) was a brother to Princess Alexandra of Denmark who became Princess of Wales and then Queen Alexandra, the consort of King Edward VII of the UK (son of Queen Victoria). Queen Alexandra was Queen Elizabeth's great-grandmother, thus King Christian IX of Denmark was Elizabeth's great, great-grandfather, whereas Philip was a closer relation to the Danish king because he was Philip's great-grandfather.

They really no longer marry first cousins as this is now more frowned upon, and many modern royals have actually married commoners. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth were NOT first cousins. They were more like second or third cousins a few times removed. Their common ancestors were Queen Victoria and King Christian IX of Denmark at least three and four generations back.

The title King is of a higher rank than the one of Queen. Since Elizabeth II was the one who inherited the throne, she was a Queen Regnant, meaning she reigned in her own right. If Philip was titled King he would have been above her :)

What "Back To History" said And a woman who marries a British king is called the Queen Consort. Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert of Saxe Coburg-Gotha was titled Prince Consort. But in both cases the children were given the husband's family name Queen Victoria = House of Hanover Prince Albert = House of Saxe .... Queen Elizabeth = House of Windsor Prince Philip = House of Mountbatten. In 1917 the British changed the name of their royal family from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. Before 1917 Prince Philips family was known as the house of Battenburg. After 1917 the name of the family was Mountbatten. Re: George V (5th's)s wife -- She was Princess Mary ("May") of Teck. Her family's name was changed to Cambridge (in 1917) It was the name of her mother's family ("Cambridge") She became Queen Consort Mary (m.1893) i.e. her married name was TecK and became Saxe- Coburg-Gotha. ---> Windsor (in 1917) Queen Mary's brother was Princess Alexander of Teck he became Alexander of Cambridge, the First Earl of Athlone.
