@@queenofdarkness3341 at low levels and even at mid-level build, the damage output is very disappointing cuz the best require 25 and up. It may not seem like a lot, but the stats u need to put into weapons (40 on strength and dex for a quality) leaves very little for passive stats like vigor, vitality, endurance, and atunement that make or break a build

All of them have a dignified animation that is well telographed with lightning arrow being the one to throw u off guard. Otherwise its all heals and buffs that leave u extremely open for backstabs. Dark miracles such as gnaw are an interesting case, dead again is a trap, and the rest are buffs. If I'm sounding cynical, I'm not trying to be. It's that builds are mainly asked for pvp rather than pve. I believe the true reason (now that I've given it some thought) is that he promised one a long time ago and never made it. The jokes been out a long time, so I don't know if he did it and the joke continued, or if he just didn't and now lets it be the meme it is today

One little fact: Miyazaki liked the idea of keeping certain small abnormalities in enemy designs, such as some weird jiggle or maneuvering, to add some fresh, interesting video-gamey sense/flavor. They directly mentioned dogs were of this case--during development they spotted that dogs had some awkward moves that were "outworldly"(such as the floaty side-jumps, I assume), but Miyazaki asked devs to leave it like that. I read that in the interview part in DS1 Design Works. I always assumed the teleporting dogs in DS3 is of the same idea(not going 100% realistic). Sorry for the wordy explanation. Just wanted to put it out here, in case anyone would like to know.

After reading some comments it probably isn't Frustum/Occlusion Culling. But rather when off-screen time is convoluted, here in this PU speed can't be stored in this state. Vertical movement is from float overflow of X/Z axis values. This forbidden knowledge is only know by 2 others, the Crystal Sage and Prince Lothric. I found out that when things are offscreen, even if behind you or really far, their animations dont load properly. (Tested on xbox with the silver knights of anor londo and slugs near the old wolf bonfire stairs)

Fun fact, you can also clearly see the Anor Londo silver knights teleport when you fight on the big staircase near the bonfire. Try looking away and back when they are descending and you will see them fall.

I was always under the impression that the dogs had a sort of rubberbanding unique to them that was intended to make it feel like they were constantly at your heels and you couldn’t outrun them - especially since they only teleport when you’re not looking.

That was my assumption. I can totally see them putting it on the one early game enemy where you run into it, immediately regret the decision, and turn to flee but get eaten 5 minutes into the level.

The game has something called occlusion culling, where animations and enemy positions are simplified to a higb degree when out of camera view, so when the dogs "teleport" it's because they went out of omission mode.

No. It's not frustum culling. It's occlusion culling. Frustum culling is when the camera doesn't render anything outside its field of view. Occlusion culling is when the camera doesn't render anything it doesn't see directly.

Since you are looking directly at them (ie. they are in your field of vision (FOV)), they are 'rendered'. Now, imagine yourself turning around so you can no longer see them. Since they are not in your field of vision, they are no longer 'rendered'. Both occlusion culling and frustum culling do this. They are the same in this scenario. Now, imagine yourself turning back towards the flowers, only this time, you place a sheet of paper in front of your eyes. Now, you are still looking towards the flowers, but you can't really see them since they are obstructed by something. This is where frustum culling and occlusion culling are different. Frustum culling will 'render' those flowers no matter if you see them or not, as long as you are looking towards them. Occlusion culling will not. Occlusion culling will know something is obstructing the view of the flowers, thus it won't spend any processing power rendering them. There are some nice examples in the video also. 3:10 is for occlusion culling, 3:46 is a decent idea of frustum culling.

The game isn't tracking their movement and position accurately when you aren't looking at this, this causes them to go flying ahead of you then fall to the ground since the game then kicks in and goes 'No, you shouldn't be flying at 300 km/h, the player can see you.'

Funny enough, it’s not just the dogs that can teleport. Big curved sword skelys and those raging boys enchaine by a crucifix have been teleporting on me. I even built a strategy to make them teleport them into walls so that I won’t have to fight them. XD

Non-rendered objects sometimes act funny, because not only do they skimp out on the render to save resources, they also skimp on physics and interactions, the dog may very well just be no-clipping when we can't see him, and is only subject to the laws of physics when the camera finally realizes its supposed to be doing its job.

I've learned the hard way that they also do this in Elden Ring.

But how does the late render theory explain that sometimes the dogs teleport mid air, facing away from you, or even in walls ? I'm starting to question the usefulness of this useless data !

When you aren't looking at an enemy the game becomes very... 'Lazy' for lack of a better word in regards to movement speed and positioning. Instead of updating the dogs position and speed each 'tick' it does it every 10 or 20 ticks which causes dogs, who are very agile and move quite fast already, to start launching themselves around at mach speed and only slowing down when they enter your field of view and have their position and movement speed calculated properly. A good spot to see this in action is on the big staircase outside Aldrich's boss room with the Silver Knights. If you bait the Knights into doing their forward lunge attack and then turn around and look away from them instead of sliding down the stairs to hit you they'll go flying over your head and fall down infront of you.

Dogs are the only enemy I struggle with even on NG9 lol Also the scooby thing killed me I can’t believe your editing is so good at times
