Everything about WATER - DarkSouls 1/2/3

Ойындар

Mechanically water does a shocking amount of things. From bonus lightning damage, elemental changes, cleaning and hidden moves. The only problem is each game decided to to it completely differently.... and it's not even consistent in each game either.... ʷʰʸ ᵐᶦʸᵃᶻᵃᵏᶦˀ

    While it might not seem it, I trimmed out quite a bit of stuff. Most importantly that the hydra's water attack is physical. Not importantly was the games which that have water veil or rogue/brightwater items.

    As a DS1 stan: Spreading lightning actually has 3 levels of damage, one from each ring. The damage reduction gets pretty significant at the edges. Each Lightning Spear has its own set of Bullets/Attacks to draw from. The Dragonslayer Spear's Lightning Spear is actually just a Lightning Spear, not even copy & pasted, just used directly. It deals reduced damage because the Spear has fairly poor FTH scaling. The Serpent-Mage actually deals magic damage, and does not have the code to spread sparks on water, nor does the Titanite Demon. In fact, only the Lightning Spear Miracles and the Sanctuary Guardian's lightning attacks have the code at all (though I might be missing one) I assume this is all stuff you cut out of the script.

    Even more useless data, the 3 levels of damage from the shock in water also deal slightly different amounts of poise damage too. Which is uselessly niche. "Aha, I got you with my 2/3rds lightning spread damage, dealing enough poise damage to stagger and follow up with my, uhh, 2nd lightning because there's not many options in this game!" But hey, explains why tanking vs sactuary guardian felt a little inconsistent. Actually taking slightly different stagger based on positioning. Also lightning scaling is just wacky. DS1, Faith. Bloodborne, Arcane. Sekiro, regular attack power. Elden Ring, Dex. Meanwhile magic damage has just always been int, it seems.

We can jump, that's pretty huge, so maybe we can swim. I drowned immediately. DS2 has so many intelligent mechanical differences from 1 and 3, like calculating lower defense when enemies are in water. Another nice one is that boosting your resistances doesn't bring the bar on screen and give you a little build up, especially when you reload an area. Even Elden Ring does this. It is really weird, because it makes it seem like they just lost the code for DS2 and went "oh well, let's just make it like DS1"

  • @ebonslayer3321

    @ebonslayer3321

  • @frazfrazfrazfraz

    @frazfrazfrazfraz

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well that bar build up when you equip a ring/talisman is so you can't just panic equip something to stop from being poisoned, probably especially in pvp. That's more of a design decision than a flaw. But yeah dark souls 2 is honestly really impressive given that it basically does everything from scratch and still achieves so much I'm honestly annoyed that Elden Ring still has the 30%/70% equip load system instead of the far superior DS2 system that changes every ten percent and also gives you increased stamina Regen the lower your equip load is. I always feel like I'm "wasting" equip load space when I don't go to 70%, which kills the fashion souls for me

  • @Winasaurus

    @Winasaurus

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@frazfrazfrazfraz The worst part of the equip load system is how much the game railroads you into mid equip load. (Or kinda light load in ds1), by making the mid-roll so absurdly strong compared to losing all the weight for fast rolls, or the little bit more armor you'd get for fat rolls. Especially bad in Elden Ring where you don't even get more i-frames for fast rolling compared to mid-rolling. Which I think might have also been the case in DS3. Just makes the game always feel the same when light rolls are pointless, and heavy weight sucks. I actually tried a heavy roll only Elden Ring but honestly the only thing making me stop was the slow stamina regen, not even the rolls. As if being heavy weight needed yet more discouragement. DS1 used to have an interesting trade off because the poise was so good it was viable to swap to fat rolls just to be tankier for a fight. But in the newer games poise is so weak that you're better off just wearing armor for defense up to 70% and rolling normally. Why even have Bull-Goat armor if all anyone is going to do with it is overlevel endurance till they can roll like they're naked anyway?

  • @spinyslasher6586

    @spinyslasher6586

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Winasaurus the problem with DS1 was that poise was TOO GOOD. All the Souls games discourage heavy weight, hell they even took the time to program in controller vibration whenever you fat roll, that's like the game blatantly telling you not to do that.

  • @Winasaurus

    @Winasaurus

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@spinyslasher6586 Yes, but then why even have a difference between fat rolls and overloaded? It's quite clear that it was intended to be a trade-off to use heavy weight at least sometimes, maybe to slowly tank an area to clear it out. The problem is that NONE of the games, barring DS1, actually do that. There is no reason to fat roll in any of them at all, 70+% weight may as well be 800+% weight. Yes, poise was too good, but that's more down to poor enemy poise damage balancing. Huge enemies should deal huge poise. The only reason the famous strat of Havel's and never rolling vs 4 kings is because they have pathetic poise damage. If they were staggering you in 1 or 2 hits (as a sword the size of a bus should), it would be better to light roll. All they need to do is make it more interesting to have fat rolls as a playstyle. They encourage low armor weight with flynn's and blue dancer talisman, they encourage mid rolls by making them the best for defense- ratio, they should encourage fat rolls too. Even if just some minor thing like dealing slightly more stamina/stance damage to enemies, due to heavier weight=more momentum. And because your mobility is so bad it slightly makes up for not being able to roll as well. Would be interesting at the very least. Because if you're good at the game and can time fat rolls, there's literally no benefit to it, since you only get 29% more armor weight to use, which is often barely enough for anything worthwhile.

    The ripples from the ds1 lightning miracles are the same damage percentages from each one. The difference in damage numbers is just because there's three different hitboxes based on how far away from the center of impact you are. It also changes the poise damage too.

    I absolutely love Dark Souls 2, but the only thing that truly annoys me in the game is that when you use any weapon (including bows, chimes, and staffs) in your left hand and you have a ultra greatsword, great hammer, or great axe in your right hand, then your character will start to walk with a weird stance like their head is tilted to the right and stuck to their right shoulder.

    @@DavidDavidson587 wtf, I’ve never seen that! I rarely use great weapons though. I know DS2 has some crazy animation systems going on behind the scenes, it sounds like a residual bug from that. Game was truly ahead of its time though!

    @@joshmay2944 Yeah I guess if you rarely used great weapons then you wouldn't know about that glitch, lol. DS2 does have a lot of unique animation stuff (going on behind the scenes), so I guess glitches like that were bound to happen. I wish they patched it out though. It's not that hard to discover if you use large weapons. The game was definitely ahead of it's time.

    Ever since I've seen the hydra's spitting water at you in DS1 I always wanted a water-magic style school. I guess sorceries have become this, given that they're blue and you do get some magic frost spells in DS3 and Elden Ring. It would have been way cooler if every elemental type had some kind of secondary effect, fire doing an arc move in tar, or on grass land. Maybe dark damage / spells doing an AoE if they hit a source of light like a torch or bonfire? Great video nonetheless!

    Also that dark spells should have done more damage in dark areas (or especially areas with the presence of the abyss/the deep). Something similar also should have existed for miracles (miracles would do more damage in the sunlight and inside holy places, like the Cathedral of the Deep, even though that Cathedral has obviously been corrupted by dark/the deep).

    Honestly, I think they could implement quote-unquote "Water" levels. They can make minor adjustments to attacks, you automatically sink and can use Elden Ring 'jump' mechanic to swim up. And the weight system can effect it as well with the more 'heavy' you are the quicker you sink but harder to swim up. With 'Overloaded' making you sink like an actual rock and be unable to swim at all.
