Do the Conservatives understand their own policy? | LBC
‘We cannot pretend that this is not deeply deeply shameful.’
James O’Brien reacts to Policing minister Chris Philp’s Question Time slip up, which left audience members shocked after he asked whether Rwanda was a different country from Congo.
The scenario led James to ask if the government really understands what the newly passed Rwanda bill does or ‘what it is designed to achieve’.
The government minister was questioned by an audience member about the Bill and what this meant for those travelling to the UK from the neighbouring country of Congo.
It comes after the Prime Minister’s flagship Rwanda bill was passed on Monday after he announced the first flights deporting asylum seekers to the country would take off in 10 to 12 weeks.
The bill was officially passed into law on after being granted royal assent on Thursday.
It followed weeks of parliamentary deadlock between the Commons and Lords.

Philps also suggested we wouldn’t send asylum seekers back to Rwanda…So he’s accepting that Asylum seekers would come from Rwanda, ergo, the country isn’t completely safe. I wonder how many Palestinians they would deport to Israel 😢
My big disagreement with the bill is that, the Uks problem with immigration is that we don’t process enough applications each year to clear that year’s application. This then leads to a back log forming, and as this has been taking place for years now we are left with large amounts of unprocessed applications. The Uk governments answer to to move them to a 3rd country until they are processed. However to insure the person’s safety we would need to process some of their application to insure that 3rd country is safe, adding further to the amount of processing work that got us into this situation. TLDR to fix our processing back log, we have added more processing to the application process.

Who here voted Tory in the last general election??!! I pray youve finally come to your senses, 'woken up and smelled the coffee!'
Politicians have one brief: Defend the party at all costs (especially if it's indefensible)
Tories living an amazing adventure of, "basically", doing what they want and getting away with it. Their 14 year cake must taste amazing!! 👏 👏 👏
I would pay to see James OB and Nick Ferrari debate immigration, cost of living, the labour party policies

No no no, James only interviews people he already agrees with, check any episode of Full Disclosure for proof.

@@jeffsimon9594No, it's just that people who disagree with James won't go headcto head with him because they are too intimidated.

It reflects a deep seeded racism. They don’t need to differentiate between different African cultures. They’re all the same in their eyes.
Nothing this government says or does shocks or surprises me anymore.
This sums the Tories up completely.
These 'mistakes' - "successful applicants will come back to the UK" and "there is a clause protecting people" - are repeated by design. They know that it will sway a few people in favour, and help the bill be passed and by then it's too late.
ZERO SEATS !!!
How can any tory MP learn enough about any job they take on when they are only in it for a few months before moving to another and then another and another
This policy is beneath our great country
The legislation is perhaps the most ridiculous Act ever passed by UK Parliament. However, there is provision made in Section 4 whereby individual circumstances can prevent someone being sent to Rwanda, but at the same time not conceding that the country is "generally" unsafe. Philp is correct that there is a clause (Section 4, (4)) that could prevent deportation in that "the court or tribunal may grant an interim remedy that prevents or delays, or that has the effect of preventing or delaying, the removal of the person to the Republic of Rwanda only if the court or tribunal is satisfied that the person would, before the review or appeal is determined, face a real, imminent and foreseeable risk of serious and irreversible harm if removed to the Republic of Rwanda." James should perhaps have read the Act before saying such a clause didn't exist. It doesn't make the Act any less ridiculous, however.
The whole point is to be seen to be cruel to foreigners, nothing else matters in their calculation.
Did he almost called congo, Bongo 🤦♂️
This government literally makes me gasp in disgust almost on a daily basis. I agree, each of them seems to be more incompetent than the last!! It's absolutely jaw-dropping laziness on their part. I am still outraged, but it becomes absolutely exhausting to keep having these intense feelings of abhorrence and disgust.
And now the EU ,the golden child, is now looking to do the same thing as the UK.
how many asylum seekers does the UK expect to send to Rwanda? i thought the hotel had roughly 200 rooms, what's the Tories plan once the Hotel has been filled?
