Do Re Mi - Man Overboard (official video)
• Do Re Mi - Man Overboa...
Absolute classic song from the iconic Australian rock band Do Re Mi, Man Overboard was a smash hit single in Australia, with a fair bit of controversy at the time surrounding the lyrical content.

Well took this Aussie back to a different time with people who are no longer with us, great memories of a great era in Aussie music, saw Do Re Mi as a pub band, before they made it big, they had the bar and lounge jumping.

OMG. This not only takes me back musically but I suddenly realised it was portraying scenes no longer to be seen. The clip accompanying the song shows guys at ANZAC Day which at it's height was a day off for veterans to celebrate around Australia and New Zealand. Completely different to how it's celebrated today, it was a day associated with overindulgence of alcohol by who knows how many traumatised men from WW1, WW2, Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam. Loaded with symbolism of patriotism, drunkenness, violence during a time of continuing antiwar sentiments from the 70s. There's so much going on in this clip to do with that era! What a blast from the past. I'm gobsmacked.

Dei here. This was the first single band cassette I bought as a kid (loved Warning Moving Clockwise). True story of this song is that it was a pure punk song, but the band could only afford to record it on some old '45 inch vinyl, like a 12" single. They finally got a radio station to play it, but they played it at the slower album speed, slowing everything down. The band were horrified, but later, one of the band members started thinking, and listening to the song at the slower speed. The long drawn out sounds, the slower beat. They rearranged the song and this was the result. Their breakthrough song and an all time fav for those of us who remember those early days of the 80's. Thanks Crankin Surf!

I remember the controversy here in Australia around this song after it was released, mainly due to the the line "Your pubic hairs are on my pillow", with some calling for it to either be banned from the air, or for the offending line be "beeped out" (which, thankfully, never happened). A really good, angry song about dissatisfaction within a relationship - I put it right up there with Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know" & Carole Bayer Sager's "You're Moving Out Today".

And (the price of typing a reply before the song finishes) I forgot the other controversial lines "You talk about Penis envy" & "like anal humor". There were a lot of commentators who thought that women shouldn't be singing about stuff like that.

A lot of stuff seen as risque in 1985 would be seen as tame these days. She had an amazing voice, I remember seeing them at a pub in Collingwood in the early days. I thought they were a bit arty farty at the time but I got dragged along by a girlfriend as payback when she grudgingly went with me to see Metal bands at the Sarah Sands hotel. I didnt like the song back then but do now.Good days in Melbourne back then, great nightlife 7 days a week.

I actually appreciate this song a lot more than I used to. I think it's because I was upset about all my favourites from the 60's and 70's were disappearing, along with live music venues and bands I loved to follow. We literally hitch hiked to another town to see them, with little to no money and no idea where we were going to stay. Somehow, something always came up and getting away with that kind of thing unscathed was becoming rare. So basically, the world was changing and I didn't like it. 😅🤣 It's a great song and yeah, that bass line 😘👌♥️
