Do I Regret My Engineering Degree?

This video was inspired by a comment on my channel from a while back. Leave your own comment down below and you might get featured! Let me know what you thought about the video, do you need to suffer to be an engineer? Is there a way to do it without suffering, I think there is. Hopefully, you can learn from my mistakes and have fun while also getting a super cool engineering degree. Don't forget to like and subscribe, thanks!
(Also, the script was a lot saltier than the video, phew)

    I regret my engineering degree. I became very negative and bitter of my difficult studies. I lost many friends along the way. That was my fault of course, but only other engineering students can understand what engineering stress does to a man and therefor i never felt joy but to push through university. Once i got out of university I hoped to get the best jobs at least but that was not the case. So yes I regret it.

    I relate 100%. In Europe you at least don't have to get in debt to get a degree, however I think I could potentially have learned a trade parallel to or instead of getting a master's degree.

    I'm still in my first year in mechatronics but I'm still wondering , is it better to study a more of a general major than one spicified like computer engineering? why do I feel like mechatronics has a wider and more applied area than computer angineering? please correct me if I'm wrong .

    Do you have any advice or anecdotes regarding research and whether its a wise decision to pursue an engineering and STEM in general out of a desire to learn about the natural world and to partake in research to make new technology? Basically, how does someone assess whether their motives for studying engineering are actually appropriate for what engineering work is like? Lately as a college freshman I've been feeling like I've been pressured to make such costly decisions based off of presumptions such as future pay and awkwardly trying to analyze the workforce (or simply doing what my parents tell me) On a more personal/goal based level I feel like there has been no time to decipher between general skills and knowledge I want to develop throughout my life and what would actually be a managable career for me. There are so many skills i want to develop as a general life goal that I have no idea what i truly want to consider as a career, and of course there's the pressure to view college as a journey towards getting a job credential. This stress seeps into my academics with how difficult the work is and how much money it costs. Mainly during school ive been focusing on learning the career i could be best suited for which is difficult since school is not the most honest place for finding out if the Industry is actually a bad fit for a person. In the nicest case most people say to merge your interests, goals and passions into a career but theres not a lot of advice on when to realize you should separate a life goal and a career because the reality of monetizing that life goal is unknown to the student.

    Right now I am deciding between electrical and mechatronics engineering.I am also going to ask questions about mechanical engineering. I need some questions answered. Please rank these 3 engineering degrees from 1 to 3. 1 being the hardest and 3 being the easiest, mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Also which one requires the most maths and which one requires the most physics. Also which one requires the most communication skills in a real job. Finally which one requires the most creativity.

    Mechanical will need more creativity if you go into a design job, electrical is the most maths/physics heavy. I think most would say electrical is the hardest then probably mechatronics since it’s basically electrical and mechanical. However, do not think mechanical is “easy” based on this ranking.

  • @yaboi3445

    @yaboi3445

    I would say electrical is only harder because you can’t physically see a lot of the stuff you will learn about. Mechanical on the other hand is much more tangible IMO.

    I am a 60yr old civil engineer. If I made a video of my career, the first part would sound identical to yours. I will now add the second part. In your career, you will live in fear of being replaced by a smart hard working young person, unless you can move up to becoming a partner or run your own business. I did enjoy my engineering career, until my son dropped out of high school and started his own business in a field that he was extremely passionate about. He now makes twice as much as me and has no fear of ever losing his job. He seems to really enjoy his work, while mine was full of stress.

    I really hate my engineering degree. I work in a production role, making good money, but what is the point of going through of that schooling when you're not going to use it? I had a few interviews in new product development engineering. I got asked what experience do you have in new product dev. engineering? I usually say, " I don't, but I know what they do, since I work in production and have an engineering degree. " ....Yeah I get rejected right after that. Engineering in general is a joke. It's over hyped as a profession. When I have kids someday, I'll tell them to be nurses or doctors or something else. Anything but engineering or STEM period.

    GPA does not matter when applying to jobs. You have your degree like everyone else. The only place it see it being more pertinent is at an internship at some of the bigger companies. For the most part if you show you are involved the GPA in engineering is not critical. It was never a blockade for me an I graduated with a 3.2 gpa.

    About halfway through my college life, I started working full time in smaller rolls in my field of study, and my grades definitely showed it. I actually ended up leaving college because I was not able to put in the study that I wanted, and just worked full time. I recently got a great job, (they did ask for all my transcripts), and despite not having the best GPA and poor grades in my last couple semesters. I got the job!

    Do you think it's a good idea to get a Electrical Technology associate degree then do a bachelor degree for mechatronics engineer 🤔. The reason I will be doing Electrical Technology Associate Degree is because I didn't have any prior knowledge for any Technical Field because I didn't do it in high school. In your opinion do you think it's a good idea. Edit: I studied architectural in high school.

  • @yt_nh9347

    @yt_nh9347

    Associate degrees are a waste of time and won't qualify you for anything close to engineering level and will just tack on debt (less than a bachelors degree but still). There is no easy short cut through engineering qualification unfortunately. On the bright side most things studied at high school level is too trivial in comparison to engineering subjects at uni, so it doesn't really matter if you missed even physics in high school. As long as you put in A LOT of work to catch up at uni
