One thing worth bearing in mind, and please don't take this the wrong way, is that, in my opinion, rather than spending what was probably £5k on a wrap, money on a carbon intake, it may have been more prudent to put that money aside for repair bills to actually keep it running...?

@dansully5927 he has gone to MonsterWraps, who are first class outfit, I knew someone who had their M2 Comp wrapped with 3M wrap, doors, shuts and returns, and its came out in the end at £5.5k, so most definitely isn't £2.5k as Inozetek are one of the highest quality brands!

Bought mine 4 years ago, LE 500 E92. Reliability wise only had to replace the actuators. Maintenance wise 2 rear ps4s's and rear discs then servicing. I've done around 15 000 miles and all in it will have cost £15 000. That's including £700 road tax per year, insurance, tracker subscription and fuel which at 19 mpg is around 35p per mile at current prices. There's not much else that gives the amount of smiles per gallon like one of these though especially something that's rear wheel drive. GT 911s maybe but can't buy one of these for the cost of an E92.

One of the best looking mid sized coupes ever made, absolutely love it. The engine issues, and the general lack of low end torque, just spoil things a bit as an only car, but as a second car for sure would love one 🙂 My mates daughter dated a lad who was lucky enough to own one, in his 20's, and his engine ate itself and left him a 12 grand repair bill. It was repaired and seems fine now, but this issue does seem to be a case of 'when' it happens, and not 'if' it happens. He paid £14 grand for it, and knew it would need money spending, a bit like you did, but he has spent well over £15 grand getting it 'right'. Is it now worth £30 grand ? I don't think so. I paid £28.749 for a mint, 1 owner from new, 25,800 mile OG M2 which is almost 10 years 'newer' than his E92 M3.

I paid around 30k for my E90 a few years ago, probably still worth similar now as still yet to hit 20k miles and I have only spend money on consumables like tyres. The key here is not to buy a POS that needs everything replacing.

Engine destruction is not inevitable if the rod bearings are replaced (on top of routine maintenance and not thrashing it when cold of course). Sorry to hear of your son's engine destroying itself 🙁. Out of interest, did he report the case to any M3 forums? Bought mine with 76k on the clock, only used as a weekend car and a couple of track days each year, now on 81k. I replaced the rod bearings (I'm a mechanic, so of course saving labour costs), TAs, clutch & f/wheel and front tyres were changed by previous owner. I replaced the rear tyres, 2 rear susp links, rear pads (I cooked them at Snetterton!) and front pads and discs last year (all pads are DS 2500s now). Bought car for 14.7k Nov 2019 when prices (by chance) were much lower! Not spent anywhere near £15k!😱

@@Assimilator1 I worked in the motor trade for many years, in parts departments, so I can appreciate the costs, and what can be saved if you do have the tools and knowledge to work on a car yourself. I'm not sure if he is on any forums, it's not my 'son' you see, it's a lad my mate's daughter was dating, but we chatted often as I had a tuned M140i at the time so we had a lot in common. Yours sounds like a well cared for example, and if you have the tools and knowledge to do the work, yes they are a great investment. Sadly I see lots for sale with 50-60 thousand miles on, and no bearing replacement done yet, which (if you are not a mechanic and have to pay a garage) is now a £3500-£4000 job. Still a lot cheaper than a full rebuild if it eats itself of course !! @ben2155 You paid £30k for yours, very good, but if it only has 20k miles on it now, it must have been a very low mileage example when you bought it, and hence why it cost 30 grand. Unless you keep it in a garage forever though, the mileage will rise, and eventually you will have to do the shells, and unless you're a mechanic like the other gent I replied to, that's a big bill.

What you are failing to understand/mention is that, all the stuff that has gone wrong during your ownership is what naturally happens at that age and mileage. You have effectively future proofed it now. It will be reliable for the next 60k for you or the next owner if you are silly enough to sell now.

Owned mine for 1 year and 1,000 miles on it. $1,851 in parts - Fuel breather valve, Idle Air Control $765, O2 sensor, Exhaust Donut, Power Steering Pump $475, belt tensioner. I did all the labor myself. I bought it for a track car and have not brought it to the track yet due to these minor issues. It was well taken care of before, but it's just BMW and these parts are wear items! Fun car overall and will go up in value for the cared for examples.

I don't understand why it would have to be all or nothing with your M3 usage, e.g DD or selling it. Even if you never track it, how about as a weekend car, fun drives and the occasional trip? Mileage and costs much lower, and you'd still have a fun (and mental sounding!😁) car to enjoy. Although, yes having 4 cars is quite a few already!😉 Btw, at 13:46 , you're on my favourite road! 😁 Had my M3 4 years so far, no plans on selling it yet. I have to keep the miles low (just done 5k so far), as otherwise I simply couldn't afford to run it. I save it for the special drives & a couple of track days each year.🙂
