From the day former president Donald Trump took office, political analysts and Democratic leaders worried his presidency would erode democratic norms and safeguards. But even after a democratic crisis as violent and alarming as January 6, America’s democratic institutions held up. But are Trump’s guilty verdicts in the New York hush money case an even bigger threat to our democracy

On GZERO World, Ian Bremmer asks former US attorney Preet Bharara and New Yorker columnist Susan Glasser what the conviction means for the 2024 US presidential election and America’s political institutions moving forward. Both Glasser and Bharara warn that the unprecedented shattering of democratic norms can have huge implications for the health of democracy as a whole, and just America’s institutions survived crises like January 6 doesn’t guarantee they’ll remain intact in the future.
“Having crossed the Rubicon [of January 6],” Glasser says, “I think that the idea that we’re just treating this as a normal election between two warring tribes with different ideologies is really what history is going to remember about this moment, unfortunately.”
“We’ve grown accustomed to the luxury of repeated, peaceful transfers of power,” Bharara adds, “There’s nothing that guarantees that just because the US has been a great democracy, it will persist in being democratic.”

A lot of the tribalism is an elite preoccupation, and it's projected on the general public. From down here, it does not appear that Americans are being radicalized along a Republican/Democrat ideological axis. Both parties have credibility issues with not just the general public, but also their own supporters. The radical partisans are mainly confined to elite circles. These are the people telling themselves that a more radical form of their existing agenda is the way forward. Both parties are being hollowed out, and the status quo is being exposed as deeply elitist. (By and for.) It's an erosion of trust and an erosion of credibility. This is the issue, not radical partisanship.

It seems to me that Preet may not recall 19th century history of the United States.

In June, I feel obliged to point out that the two sides, are missing the third side. The majority is the non voter if free speech exists. If free speech doesn't exist, then the non voter is guilty of whatever you say they are to make your one of two sides function with ease.

For the US to keep stating they’re the best country in the world is about as ridiculous a statement as Trump saying he’s the best president there ever was 😂

Changing laws and statute of limitations to overcharge on laws nobody else has ever been charged with against your political opponent in an election year is the real attack on democracy. Changing voter mail in laws against a state’s constitution could definitely be perceived as election interference in 2020,big tech collusion with the DOJ to suppress the hunter biden laptop? Phony Steele dossier that was pushed as fact for years that Hillary Clinton was fined for financing BUT THATS NOT ELECTION INTERFERENCE? Even when Adam Schiff, the head of the INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE blatantly lied in congress and knew it was false. His penalty? Censure. These are proven lies by democrats accepted by democrats because the MSM is complicit in spreading these lies but omit reporting when democrats are caught in these lies. Yes there is a threat to democracy and it’s not Donald Trump but I wouldn’t expect you to verify these facts on your own because you are locked in your narrative 😢

This isn't just about America. It's about the democratic world. Not prosecuting Trump erodes the standing of the US in the democratic world and we'll just lose trust.

What caused populism to find its expression on the right wing? Looks like this is a reaction to credibility issues amongst the institutional left. You're correct that rule of law precedes democracy, but it's not a sufficient condition. I prefer the framing of credibility instead of trust. It places the burden on the speaker, where it should be. Trust is something people ask for when they want you to accept what they're saying without question. I'm not so sure public officials deserve any of it. Democratic accountability relies on critical thinking, not blind trust.

The world has lost trust in America because the left is bastardizing the legal system to attack Trump and the world sees it. Just look at the EU elections, people the world over are sick of the woke agenda being pushed on them and are voting these people out. This is the democratic process, the voters decide, not the judiciary, alphabet agencies,MSM or the governing party. People see the weaponization of agencies against Trump and it only makes him stronger.
