Biden isn't going anywhere for now | Ian Bremmer | Quick Take

What's going to happen at least for the near term, is that Biden isn't going anywhere. He would have to decide to stand down. He certainly is not prepared to do that. His team would have to tell him strongly that they feel like he's making a mistake. They're not prepared to do that, either. And this is something we've seen on a few occasions.

Ian Bremmer's Quick Take: Hi, everybody. Ian Bremmer here and a Quick Take to kick off your week. The topic everyone is discussing, of course, is what is the state of play in the US election for President Biden's reelection campaign in particular? What's going to happen? What are the outcomes?
Well, what's going to happen at least for the near term, is that Biden isn't going anywhere. He would have to decide to stand down. He certainly is not prepared to do that. His team would have to tell him strongly that they feel like he's making a mistake. They're not prepared to do that, either. And this is something we've seen on a few occasions. Remember, Biden has been serving at high levels in Foreign Office for decades as vice president for eight years, in addition to president for almost four and senator including running the Foreign Relations Committee for decades and decades. And so the people around him, they are very loyal. They have a lot of experience. And they've been on and committed to Team Biden for a very long time. They absolutely are willing to give him advice. And they execute as well as they can, on his directives. But they are very unwilling to challenge him, particularly when he feels strongly about an outcome.
And we've seen this play out on Russia-Ukraine, Biden was unwilling to talk about moving towards a negotiated settlement as the Ukrainians were doing better and better. They were kicking it down the road. They weren't having the difficult decision because no one was willing to really challenge it. And then the situation for the Ukrainians started getting worse, and it was “they'll manage reasonably well,” the tactical on the day to day. And you have a strong coalition that the Americans are leading. But at no point are you making the big sudden change. It's very cautious. It's very conservative. and it tends to kick the can on big, controversial potential decisions.

The ironic thing is that Biden seems to be doing this for his ego, but when he loses to Trump and brings the party down with him, his legacy will be irrepairably tarnished. The primaries are for replacing the candidate. There's real legitimacy issues when replacing the candidate any other way. It looks to me that the process that produced these candidates needs some real examination. Too much insider politics, too many foreshadowed party elections have produced this environment. Personally, I think if you're not going with multi party democracy, you need a much more popular primary process. This is where ideological differences are expressed democratically in American two party politics.

That’s a wrap on democracy in the USA. You can thank the leaders of every check on the executive branch for their failure to uphold their oath to protect the Constitution. From McConnell to Garland to the SCOTUS 6, to Biden’s refusal to step down giving us voters a viable alternative. It’s time to prepare ourselves for a future under autocracy before Trump is sworn in.

Why not blow maga minds by nominating a moderate REPUBLICAN? That would be the ultimate demonstration of putting country ahead of party. Trumpanzees would call any moderate a RINO, but the tax-sensitive voters and even social conservatives with class would have someone to vote for other than Trump.

An option would be for Biden and Harris to switch roles, such that she would be the presidential candidate and Biden the vice president. They can continue on the same election program, but an old and frail vice president would be less critical and he could still contribute with his experience. Should he get too frail after election, exchanging a vice president is less dramatic and the electorate wouldn't feel as deceived about his health as if he were president.

Don’t the people around him and the senior people in government and the party have an obligation to the American people and constitution or a fiduciary duty to consider removing himbecause he’s increasingly senile? In America, you can declare bankruptcy way after you knew it was over internally. You can drive the bus off the cliff. In England, for example if the directors of a company do not step up when the company clearly can’t meet, it’s obligations then they have personal liability. Don’t they have the obligation to say that he’s not able to do the job he can’t even get through some questions on a podium. Do you think he can act effectively in the war or in his job considering dozens of things every day?

Another well-articulated description of this moment and this subject. Thank you, Ian Bremmer. As for the prep team over prepping the President, that glazed, somewhat distant look of the President during the debate suggested he didn't get enough rest. And for an 81 yr. old, not enough rest and that sore throat are absolutely catastrophic conditions, which we saw. I think Mr. Bremmer's idea to switch the ticket is a good one. The President announces he and Kamala Harris will switch positions. She will be the Presidential nominee and he will stand beside her as the Vice President. The delegates at the convention will then confirm the change. And I agree with Mr. Bremmer's assertion that the risk in this scenario is no greater than the risk of the ticket remaining as it is.

Considering some possibilities... Running Kamala Harris should be a complete non-starter. As should running some unknown. In my view, the only viable options would be well-known quantities. Bernie Sanders has high favorability and low unfavorability ratings compared with many politicians. He's also garnered significant support and votes in the past two elections. His health seems good, and he's sharp. He's also a populist, and the country is definitely in a populist mood right now. People know Bernie by his first name. And Bernie has polled much higher against Trump than Biden has. Yes, the party machinery doesn't like Bernie, but I think running some unknown from the depths of the party machinery like the Creature from the Black Lagoon would be a mistake. Gretchen Whitmer could be a possibility. Gavin Newsom is certainly a skilled debater, but I don't think that's particularly important because the way that Trump debates, it doesn't matter how good of a debater you are-Trump can still come out on top. And I don't think Gavin Newsom is particularly charismatic, and his record is not particularly impressive. I think Trump could do a lot of damage to Gavin Newsom. Who else? JFK Jr.? Oprah Winfrey? The Rock? Maybe for a dark, dark horse candidate, Katie Porter, but my sense is not too many people know her. I think her time is in the future. She seems like a good, decent person, but it's hard to imagine that that would be sufficient for her to beat Donald Trump. I don't think that it's sufficient for a candidate to simply not be Donald Trump in order to win. I think the candidate has to be able to generate enthusiasm and excitement and exude some charisma. Some have mentioned Al Gore. Charisma does not jump to mind. I'm not sure how Al Gore would be much different from somebody like John Kerry. A possibility, but not very exciting. My concern would be the party insiders trying to select some insider that they like but who will lose. The objective should be to win. And Biden has proven that Trump is beatable. The party should be conducting lots of polling to see which potential candidates score best. There is precious little time to pull off the switch if it's going to happen. We as a country should have never been put into this position. The presidency may be hard to walk away from, but the good of the country has to come first. Or can the electorate accept that Biden is basically only going to be available from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. -- assuming his condition doesn't worsen? Here's a fun thought: even if Trump loses this election, he can run again in 4 years, and for the rest of his life, for that second term. So even if Biden manages to win, we're going to be back in the same boat in 4 years. And once Trump gets in ...
