I find the opposite. A lot of my colleagues, friends and family in GE claim that their English is oh so great, but when they speak my husband, daughter and I almost cringe because there are so many mistakes and the accent is so very German. I'd rather have someone say that their English (or any other foreign language) is communicative rather than perfect because in the end the most important thing is that you get your message across.

I would say that Berlin does not "represent" all of Germany just like London does not represent the rest of the UK. The smaller a city/town the less people will speak English; the older generation i.e. people in their 70s/80s speak less English since many of them did not learn it in school. Then the level of English people speak depends on their level of education as well and their interest in keeping up with English after they leave school. For my generation (born in 1966) it was hard to come by English books and newspapers let alone videos. You had to be in a larger town and go to the train station to get the Times or Guardian for example, and it might not have been a current issue either. As for books in English, only specialty bookstores would carry them. I used to stock up on books whenever I visited England in the 1990s :-). Now, with the internet the whole world is at your fingertips.

Probably the best tip I've ever received for learning English is from my English teacher in college. Read Harry Potter in English. And here's why: Book 1 The Philosopher's Stone is written in English for first and second graders, that is, young people who are just beginning to internalize literacy. it is extremely simple English. With each book, the level of English increases so that Book 7 The Deathly Hallows is written in the understanding of 16-17 year olds. With this series of books you can gradually expand your understanding of the language because you can only get better if you actively use English.

I find it so amazing that so many Germans and Europeans in general speak English. It's a great testimony to their academics and learning institutions. I find the same level in France as well. I say amazing, because where I live in the US, I meet so many native Spanish speakers and they often have lived in the US 10 to 20 years and can still only say, hello, good bye and thanks in English. Their entire life as in phone, television, social media are all in Spanish, so they stay in their comfort zone with no desire to learn and just fine living life as English uneducated. Academic ambition and achievement has so far to go in Central and South America.

I lived in Germany/Austria for about one year (spread over six summers). When meeting the locals, after they learnèd I was from the US, they'd invariably start speaking in English, despite the fact we'd started off in German. I had six years of German studies when I was young, and my accent was good enough that many Germans initially thought I'd grown up in Germany. Eventually I started lying, claiming I was from Scandinavia, and my German was much better than my English -- that was the only way I found to actually speak GERMAN in GERMANY. The German people need to remember that not ALL Americans are ignorant barbarians. Some are actually intelligent, well-educated and articulate in a second language.

What's important to know is why Germans do this. It's mostly because we don't wanna burden other people with speaking our language and we think it's polite to switch to English. I know that it often comes across as unsupportive, but most Germans do it to actually be supportive. Another thing about Germans is that we need direct communication. So if you wanna speak German rather than English your best bet is to just say "Hey, you often seem to switch to English. I'd actually prefer to speak German. Is that fine with you?" and in 98% of the cases you'll be fine.

We should not forget that Germany is the power house economic of Europe and now in 2023 become the third biggest economic country on earth (Germany has surpassed Japan by GDP this year)! That's why Germany has big influences in Europe even in worldwide! This makes Germans don't really have to speak English on their daily life! I am German, I learned English from my fifth year at school onwards (dates me a bit as children today start with English classes in their first year), learned Latin then from year seven, French for the ninth and tenth year (alongside English and Latin) - and started Spanish for a few weeks in an evening course. My interest for the language came with me listening to the Beatles. Music does so much for the English language. Later it was books. The odd movie. All long before the internet had taken off. Later the internet had a huge impact, too, but that was a decade after I had my Cambridge Advanced Certificate (somewhen in the early 90s), for which I had to attend evening classes. I liked Genesis' old music, 74/75 - the story teller albums - and I was very happy that my English was good enough to understand what they sang. So I would probably not say "a little bit" when asked on the street, but "yes, but viz a veRRy heavy DjeRRRman Eggscent".

I am German too. The first english classes i had was when i was about 5 or 6 years old. Of course in the beginning we only learned the translations for colours, animals or food, the whole grammar came later. But still, you could say i have been learning english for about 18 years now. Growing up like this i always felt my english was lacking. I was ashamed because i have a very strong accent and when speaking out loud i made grammar mistakes from nervousness. It might be because in general most Germans learn english for a long time and a lot of english is used in our every day life so the average level might be higher than elsewhere. Lately i consume a lot of english content from non native english speakers and without wanting to sound rude or disrespectful i now see that my level of english is not as bad as i always thought it was. Since then i no longer feel embarrassed or ashamed to make mistakes. For example when i write a comment and know that it feels a bit off i don't really care about it anymore because people will understand what i want to say and most people reading it are probably non native speakers anyway. So when Germans say their english is bad it might be because they compared themselves with other Germans who are better.

Interesting. Most of the time I lived or spent time in Germany, I rarely spoke English with other people. Then also, I lived in small towns or villages, rather than large cities. Unless some tourist would ask me if I spoke or understood English, I only used the local German Dialects when speaking with others. The times I studied at university in Freiburg im Breisgau or at the Max Planck Institute there, either German or English was acceptable for conversational purposes with others. Back then we referred to English as the "Queen's English" rather than American, Australian, Kiwi, Indian, Canadian, African or some other variant. What you folks should really do, is a theme of The Story of English and how it came to be. It is one of the most difficult language to learn, because of all the "exceptions to the rule" situations and that it is a "layered language" as an amalgamation of 5 different languages over its 1500 year olde history.

I am German. I learned english in scholl. Last school exame was 5 ( from 1 best to 6 very worse). Know it is very importent in university abilitys. Was very happy that i dont need english in my university time. But it would be needed for an international career. My uni career end. ( not only from that fact )Was a few years without any contact to english language. Than internet communication began. English was an opportunity to write with foreign people from different nations. Wonderful, interesting. My old forgetten english got a renaissance. Little bit. So reading and writing seems to me is more easy for me today than 15 years ago. But easily understand when someone speak english is more difficult for me. I see at the example of my kids in which way they learned english. Basic was school but the internet with englich turorials or english games are the way to learn it much more fluent. Harey potter book reading in holiday was for my daughter her first big way to speak english. So my personal experience with english. And with french- i got it in school 4 yeRs too. But now french- horribel. Remember the meaning of some word if i read them. Not more. And i believe you see my german grammar. Hope english motherspeaking people understand it.

The first English person who spoke to me was a Cockney Bus Conductor. I was absolutely lost, bc I did not understand one word! After a while I got used to the different pronounciations of English. I guess I do speak a mixture of British and American English like most other Germans. I think 'Euroenglish' is a good expression as the woman in the Video said.

I found that I could chat with an AI English teacher for one hundred sentences per day for free yesterday! It's amazing, isn't it? She could answer my questions quickly and correctly. It helped me to speak more quickly because if I stopped speaking, it's her turn to answer my question. I chatted with her for one hour for free. It's a double-edged sword and cannot be generalized, there's Germans that do it fairly good and there's those that absolutely don't. Plus, it does depend on the individual and to what extend they were willing to expand their knowledge of English beyond basics in school. Some will be able to converse about absolutely everything while the average person you meet in the streets will have their limitations in terms of vocabulary and grammar and be much less articulate then others. German is the main language and those that grew up in Germany and went through the German education system, regardless of their ethnicity, Turkish, Arabic, African, most are all Germanized and therefore live and breathe German, even if some wont admit it. Same like the people of France. It would certainly help to define what "speak" means in this context. Saying "how are you" "fine", most will be able to say it, but how long will the conversation last would be another story.

I grew up in Berlin and learned from 5th to 10th grade English. I have one memory where I was asked where the Naturkundemuseum was. I froze, and I'm sure I had some trouble to say one sentence at all. This was after my 10th grade, and I was really horrible at English. 6 years past without me speaking any English than I did my Fachabitur and was reintroduced. I passed with a 3 I guess, so not really better after 10th grade. 3 months later I started at a university and was introduced into an online game, where you were able to write and so the journey of me getting better at English started. Nowadays, I read and watch movies/TV shows in English. So the school English did nothing for me except maybe a little basics.

I'd say most people don't really care. We are aware there are regional differences, and in school we are taught the british variety. But the moment you start to watch movies, listen to music, go on he internet the vast majority is probably american. It all blends and doesn't make a difference if I'm learning english in germany. I really don't get the first question of the video. Do you prefer british or american english? In what context? hearing? speaking? writing? There are english accents that sound really nice, some sound horrible, and some that are almost impossible to understand. But I'm not trying to imitate any of them when speaking so again it doesn't matter. As for writing I'm probably inconsistent but again I'm not pretending to be from either side of the ocean. If I'm going to live there, I would probably have a preference to blend in. And that would come quite naturally with the experience of living abroad. But ask me in the streets of Berlin and I couldn't care less.
