DNA Family Secrets: Where was our birth father from?

Podcast: The triplets' story • DNA Family Secrets: Wh...
turiking.co.uk/
Triplets, David, Philip, and Peter were adopted when they were four years old and have never known the identity of their birth father. They're wondering if analysing their DNA can solve the mystery of their ethnicity?
So, you know a bit about your birth mother?
Yeah.
But nothing really about your father?
Yeah.
You don't even know what ethnicity your father was?
Yeah.
Why do you need to know?
I think it's to give you a sense of belonging. Everybody deserves, you know, to know who he created them.
Hello, you two, come on in.
Hello.
Come and have a seat.
So, when you first came and saw me you basically had one main question, your biological father's heritage and actually this is where DNA completely comes into its own because you had nothing to go on, you didn't have any information did you?
So, what we did, the first bit was, we looked at your Y chromosome because you can look at somebody's Y chromosome and you can say something about their ancestry on their biological father's side.
So, remind me where did you think your biological father came from?
I thought South American somewhere maybe, Italy maybe so….
Yeah.
We actually got a very clear result.
Right
Your biological father had mixed ancestry.
Yeah.
But very clear locations as to where that came from. So, the first of those is actually in West
Africa.
Right.
So, around Liberia, let's show you a map.
Oh.
So, you can have a look. We are getting hits around Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana and up into Mali. It seems to be centred around Liberia, obviously DNA doesn't follow political borders and we know that there's been huge amounts of migration and people trading and so you get a mixture of DNA here. So, is that a bit of a surprise?
That's amazing.
Right, so, the other half of your father's DNA, again very clear and it's from Northern Ireland.
Not too far away.
Okay I wasn't expecting that one.
So, it is in South Down and North Louth.
Right.
In this area here, so, where about you guys so live?
We grew up here and we now live, South Down is where we grew up.
So, basically where are you guys grew up?
Strange, I never once expected that.
We were surprised.
Wow.
The other thing that we were doing was that we were looking in the database and we're looking for people who share a high number of centimorgans with you. So centimorgans is basically a term that we use to describe how much DNA you're sharing in common with somebody else and we got a match.
So, I'm going to draw you a family tree.
Okay.
So, it seems to centre around two brothers, this one is a chap called James, over here this is Samuel. Now we are getting a match with a woman who we think is your first cousin, so James is her father. So, we think that Samuel would be your father, we think that's the most likely scenario. Now, really sadly from talking to the family we think that Samuel died about a decade ago.
Right, yeah.
Now, we have talked to the family, but they are really not forthcoming.
I can understand that, yeah.
Yeah.
They actually don't want to have any more contact, so obviously we're going to respect their wishes.
Yeah, we understand that.
Yeah.

This is a remnant from the Famine and how Irish Families act. During the famine, parents became more stoic so they would not get too emotionally attached to a child that would die of starvation. It never worked and they always ended up more hurt than not, but they never showed their children affection. So, when the children that did survive grew up, they were stoic and never showed love to their own children. Does not mean they did not love them but that is how they were raised and thus generations were raised that way. Once someone is buried in the ground, the old thought is that they are with God now and it is too painful to be reminded of them. Again, we do not know the context, but perhaps they want to leave Samuel buried in the ground and not revisit painful memories associated with his passing. I knew a woman who cried every time she would see her grandchildren because they looked so much like their father, who was her son that passed away, who himself looked like her own father. She loves them dearly but seeing them brings up a painful past of those she loved and lost. Not all Irish families are this way, I was blessed with a very loving, warm and emotionally close family. But other families prefer to avoid the pain of the past so they ignore it altogether.

@@2randomblackmen This is a very interesting historical development. The old yankee families in New England came to the same emotional result. Once again it was due to the high mortality rate among children and the need to harden oneself to survive in a cold, forbidding climate. I descend from both Irish and Yankee bloodlines and have noticed these emotional behaviors in my own family.

I hope they do. Some people have a very deep seated hate for the parent that left them and they transfer that hate to their half siblings or siblings. It's illogical but i feel like they have no one else to blame. It's either that or they simply don't wanna think about their past because it hurts them too much and at some point they closed the chapter and don't want to go back to it. It happened with some of my dad's half siblings. I cannot understand the irrational hate towards an innocent person though... Maybe It's hatred towards themselves. Wish you good luck!

Doubt anyone can collect on inheritance especially if the biological parents didn't recognize them legally. They gave them up for adoption. Many times the biological father was not aware of their birth or the biological mother kept it from them as well. Doubt, any fortune would be due unless there's a clause that needs proof of paternity...not sure the laws in every country.

I disagree. What many people seem to forget is that when children are given up or abandoned, this is usually due to difficult circumstances and family dysfunction. Unfortunately, patterns of family dysfunction don’t always go away over time or with new generations. I have been on the opposite side of one of these stories when a half sibling got in touch. My experience taught me that, though there is a genetic bond, you are ultimately opening your heart, home and family to the scrutiny of a total stranger. Even with the best will in the world, this can be very hard, especially when the new family member still harbours understandable feelings of resentment. This reality is rarely mentioned in these types of show because most viewers only want the “happy ever after” finale. Don’t be too hard on the biological family - it may be a wise decision on their part right now. They may need time to process things and could change their mind in time.

I apologize for my ignorance and stupidity; but, I sorely fail to understand their father's family not wanting contact with these great young men. I'm a Black American and understand nothing of this. Years before my father married (was a World War II veteran--"sharp shooter" during the war and not a cook) had a daughter and my siblings and I are about to meet her. She wanted to wait until her DNA comes back before our meeting and we are respecting her wishes but anxiously await our meeting. Our dad died in 2000 of cancer; I have informed her daughters, who are in constant contact with my brother and me, of our family health issues. I participated in at least 5 DNA companies hoping half brothers and sisters, whom I've never met, would make contact. So far, one daughter of the above half sister made contact; I'm not on Ancestry that much so she beat me to it. He also has children in France and England (he told us). It was against the law, in racist America, for blacks to marry whites so there was no way for him to bring any white woman to the US and marry even though they had children. During the war many many American soldiers, black and white and etc., had children within the countries they were stationed. Great to have a new sister, two new nieces and a nephew (and their children) to get to know. :) A definite compliment that I knew there was African in them before she said anything; but, what happened to the third triplet?? Did I miss information given? I wish these young men the best life has to offer!!!

Some people deal with all sorts of darkness in their families. They didn't say that the triplets' biological father definitely died 10 years ago, there was some uncertainty around this. Why would that be? It's clear that the members of that family weren't very close. It's entirely possible that he wasn't a good man, that there's some dark reason why the niece wanted nothing to do with his memory. Perhaps she had a lot of compassion for the boys, and didn't want to burden them with the truth. Or maybe she just didn't want to know them because it hurt too much for some other reason. It's impossible to know.

I was fortunate that my Mom was a fantastic woman. She was up front about my birth father, who had become physically abusive...her valid reason for leaving him! My memories of him are not positive ones, even though I was very young. Am in my 50's now and have only seen him twice since I was 3. In my teens, I was visiting my grandparents...he was there...and his only comment was about my weight!!. He has had a completely separate life from his family and other children. I recently found out that he lives close to where my family lived and his nicknames is Pops! People ask if I want to meet him...after all this time...My Mom remarried when I was about 5 and that man was my Dad...I was officially adopted and we were warmly embraced into that family. My paternal grandmother, however, would continue to address all correspondence to me, all her life with my birth father's last name. 🙄 I hope these guys have a good solid support system and don't see this as a personal rejection. Live your lives fully! It is that family's loss for not accepting you.❤

Just wrong the family members were contacted and didn't want any contact with them.Hopefully someone along the line will make the decision meet these men. My dad was adopted. When we tracked down his natural family the first 2 we made contact with did't want to meet us.Then after a time the other family members found out and met/accepted us 100%.They were all full blood brothers and sisters of my dad

Are the family members spirit that spiteful or is there more to the story? Either way, I hope this workout to the young fellows advantage. They do not deserve to be shunned from the family. Wishing them Love, Peace and Happiness.

Shame runs deep in religious societies, having children adopted, given up, for whatever reason, not wanting to take accountability, nor wanting to 'dig' or let out 'family secrets'. The shame is probably the largest in especially Catholic societies but in all 'religious' societies. The Church have a lot to answer for, or those who created 'religion', for whatever purpose. So many have suffered unnecessarily and children who never got to know their parents. It is a crime to be honest. Denying these men their true heritage is criminal whichever way we look at it. It is probably a slight shock for the brother and his family but how can you not want to embrace your own blood? Then again, many of us have family who know about us but equally don't care, so one should not be to surprised. Just a shame we cannot as a society come together better than we do. x

Their reason for not meeting the boys could be inheritance issues. Its one thing sharing with one half sibling but quite another when there is three . Not saying the boys are looking for anything but that might be what is on the minds of the boi family.

If the child was the very common result of rape or incest, then I completely understand the no contact rule. However, in those circumstances, if the birth mother is able to, I hope she could write a letter explaining the circumstances of the child's conception, important medical information, and maybe a photo. Genealogical testing is fast overcoming many people's desire for privacy, and children are finding parents through nieces and nephews uploading their DNA.

I'll honestly never understand the people that turn away their literal blood brothers and sisters who just want to know a little bit more about the ancestors that you've always known.. It comes across just so egotistical. Even if it brings personal pain to you, just hand it off to another family member to just answer some questions. Not becoming personal friends if you don't want to, or stay in regular contact, but just answer questions. Allow them the opportunity to actually learn and see where they came from. That has been taken away from them once and now you take that away from them twice, that's just hella rude.
