DMV: Freedom, Simplicity, and Finding your Life's Purpose: A Conversation with Scooter Tramp Scotty
In this video, I sit down for a conversation with legendary motorcycle figure, Scooter Tramp Scotty- a man who's been on the road since 1995. Camped out in Mountain Cycleworks in Asheville, NC, we discuss such topics as the benefits of a simple life, being able to find your true passions, and what holds people back.

Remember these guys don’t have kids, wife, ex-wife, child support, alimony. Advice they are giving is for young or old people who have met responsibilities or have no responsibilities. My hats off to them for making their personal freedom #1. For most of us though that ship has sailed.

Your absolutely right when you have responsibilities to other people you cannot cast care to the wind or your just selfish bum. I just watched a video pod cast with Sean Ryan with John Burke. John interviewed over 1500 people who had NDE most of them said there is an after life where you will be accountable for the life you lived in this world.

I learned most of this from my single mom raising 2 boys. We often lived in very simple places. Sometimes a small trailer set on a piece of land near a house. At one point i had a tent for a bedroom. What more does a boy want/need? In this way i learned just how possable simplicity actually is, and how much exess i dont really need. Thanks mom.

LOL...there are probably people out there that are trying to figure out a way to put the wife on the back and the two kids and the dog in a side hack...lol...where there's a will there's a way.

Others will always have a different story than you. Find your own version of life that gives you joy, freedom, and a story you can tell with pride. If you look for all the reasons you can’t, you will find every one of them.

I understand what you're saying but if you're talking about just making your life happier, it does not have to be on the back of a motorcycle. A lot of people are going to a minimalistic lifestyle. Tiny house on some land. Scotty and Joe are also talking about just get your life in a position where you are happier as an individual. Not just on the back of a motorcycle. Whatever it takes.
I’m fortunate enough to have enough money, my own medical practice, and I have a wife who understands my wanderlust. I don’t have the full on Vagabond drive but I have to take a month off for solo motorcycle travel, camping, etc a couple of times a year. I feel my spirit wake up & become reinvigorated on each trip. I also appreciate the time I’m home with my wife more when I return. Clearing my head and realizing just how much I get caught up in petty bs when I’m around other people is good for me & good for my family/friends/patients. Solitude is essential for me to be a better man in society.

Haha right on
Although I camped free off my motorcycle on and off for many years, road life was too stressful for me. So years ago i bought 30 acres of cheap northern forest land and built an off-grid solar cabin. I live extremely cheap, relaxed and my wants are few. I also pursued a writer's life along with gardening and woodcutting. It's a good way to wind things up. 😅

Nice. What kind of writing do you do?
I’m doing my first big journey. Just quit my job of 16 years building bridges and decided I was going to step out of the rat race for the summer. Left upstate ny a few days ago . In Charlotte now seeing my daughter for a couple days and heading west in the morning. I really hope to come across Scotty at some point. Would love to have a face to face with him and get some more knowledge, I’m on my own path and I am boondock camping , but still look up to the old heads and listen to all their words. I believe our paths will cross

Well said! I believe you speak the truth my brother 😎
After reading a few comments I am not surprised that this vid sparked a little debate. LOL / I never heard where either of you is telling anyone they should live that life, only recounting your own personal stories about the nomad motorcycle life. With that said, I totally get it that some would suggest that life happens in other's lives to prevent them from making the same choice. I thought it was a good video myself, Joe. Scotty is an interesting cat, as are you you. Having lived my life on the road also (be it 30 years as a truck driver), I really get it on the talking points. Great job, bro! Stimulating stuff. Keep it up!!
Very good thanks

People relate their happiness to material things including money. I used to until I started getting rid of stuff and I soon realized that the less crap I had the happier I truly was.. most people will think that you have lost your mind. Alot of people don't realize that almost every state has either state or federal blm land that doesn't have utilities but is free to camp on.. you can pull up on a map where all this land is located
You asked Scotty why people "stay in the hamster wheel",..... and he said fear. That may be true for a small percentage of people in my opinion . I can only speak for myself, but the reason for me is I have made a commitment to my family to provide for them and give my kids a better quality of life than I had. You want to talk about fear? That is a pretty scary concept and takes much discipline to make it succeed . No judgement here.......would love to do what you're doing......but not long term. I'd like to see another video of the downside of living the motorcycle vagabond life.

One Question, I did not hear you guys talk about was what is the better type of motorcycle to have while living/riding on the road? Adventure Bike or Street Bike, Sport Touring, Dual Sport? I would think Adventure motorcycle. I have both...... Yamaha FJR 1300 - Suzuki DL 650A V-Strom Adventure. Plus a couple of more. lol I would rather be on my V-Strom 650 Adventure. Love my FJR 1300 don't get it wrong! The best of both Street and Off Road is a Adventure Motorcycle...... Braap!😁Limited on where to ride on off road camping on a 650lb+ Street Bike. Heavy Street motorcycles suck......... F that.............
