@@Tennis_ExpertFit and healthy? 2015 was Nadal’s worst since 2004 and 2021 his foot was so bad he skipped 2.5 months of tennis and ended up in crutches causing him to miss the rest of the year. He won’t say it because he doesn’t want to take Djokovic’s greatest achievement from him but it’s true. My guy was playing with one foot and he still produced amazing tennis

I sometimes rewatch this match and it leaves me speechless every time. It might be one of the most hard fought matches in history, especially that 3d set in which nadal would have blown anyone else in history off the court yet somehow djokovic found a way to prevail. Nadal remains an untouchable god on clay and it's fitting that the GOAT managed to beat him twice at RG. One other final that was postponed to monday because of rain was a big disadvantage for Djokovic, I thought he was going to win that one too, the rain spoiled everything and he lost a bit of momentum. But in this match these two guys were playing a different game on clay than all other tennis players before them.

the third set is insane ....one of my favorite matches ever . Novak is the only player who mananged to defeat Nadal in all important clay tournaments ( FO + the Masters ) as you said Nadal is the King of clay and Novak is the GOAT of tennis .

Mm... For me it's not the best at all. Not the best even between Djokovic and Nadal. Not even in RG. 😅😂 Of the three last years: - 2020 both were playing better than in 2021 and 2022 but Nadal was so dominant the match wasn't that interesting. - 2021: Djokovic played great, Nadal quite good, he was a bit injured judging by the fact his season ended there. Both weren't at the level of 2020 but the match was more intense, more balanced and interesting. - 2022: Pretty similar to 2021 but viceverse. Nadal was somehow astonishing, one of his best performances. Djokovic was playing great but wasn't as fit it seems by the little he had played before, although he had won Rome. I think it was as interesting as 2021 and with a performance almost as strong as Nadal in 2020, so the perfect mix.

Greatest clay match of all time.

One of the best tennis nights this match is ingrained in my memory, It felt unreal what he did that night, to beat Nadal at his best at Roland Garros, amazing

I was thinking the same. Rafa "owned" The French Open for so many years, and he defeated Djokovic so often. This match, for me, was the beginning of the end for Rafa as a competitive player. I've watched other greats in their day (Borg, Becker, Federer) and each was amazingly superb, and then each had that one match after which each said, "Enough!" Great competitors, all; great for tennis, all!

People claiming Nadal was injured is just BS, Nadal was better in clay season '21 than '22 where he even retired in Rome. I would say he played almost the same level in both matches but Djokovic wasn't this good in '22. Apart from last 2-3 games I dare anyone to show me any point where Rafa looked injured or didn't move well enough. 3rd set was peak level from both, Rafa even had a set point, probably have won the match if he took that and of course have beaten Tsitsipas next too.

Look at the amount of times they've played each other on hard and clay in the same period and then comment. Even since the pandemic, Rafa and Nole have played each other 4 times on clay and 0 times on hard. Nole was lucky not to face Rafa in his worst year (2017 Jan to 2018 June), while Rafa in his worst phase had to play Novak at RG (2015).

Thank you to the unbiased commentators who are truly appreciative of the qualities of both players, especially Nole who won against all odds here after he was trailing 0-5 games in the 1st set. This is in direct contrast to USO commentators who clearly overlooked monumental special ability of Nole in each of his match

If you could do condensed version of this match that would be the greatest experience

I still remember this was the match that sent Nadal into a deep depression for six months, he was devastated coz he lost this match to his most fierce rival at his favorite surface at the favorite tournament. It was a heartbreaking moment. Nevertheless, they have met 10 times here, Nadal has an 8-2 edge over Novak at the Roland Garros. Kudos to Novak as well for challenging Rafa at French Open on a regular basis. I wonder what it'd be like if Rafa had met Novak 10 times in Novak's favorite surface at the Australian Open.

Greatest display of tennis ever on clay. Huge respect for these two legends. Just can’t believe that diehard Rafa fans talked that Nadal was injured. You either are delusional or never picked up tennis rackets in your life. He literally beat Djokovic in Rome finals like two weeks before this match. 2011 Rome was not supposed to be a night session. It was delayed due to rain. They wanted an afternoon session. Madrid on the other hand has a roof so looks like that was intentional at the time.

the different between the RG 2020 final and RG 2021 SF is the court condition. ON that 2020 indoor condition is nadal always the favourite vs novak =95% vs 5% . On that warm 2021 night session condition is novak the favourite. 75%vs25%. On cold 2022 night session condition is also nadal the favourite 65% vs 35% . In daysession condition on clay is ALMOST always nadal the favourite against novak 80% vs 20%.

Beginning of the 4th set - Novak looked calm almost emotionless, yet Rafael looked perplexed, no solution there. Then I knew Rafael was going to lose.

I have a friend that keeps on diminishing this match because he says that Rafa has injured and that this is not a praiseworthy match. How can I defend Novak's greatness during this match?

It is the important match in tennis history. If Novak didn't win, maybe Nadal has the most GS now.

@@Max-yp1iw yes he beat him, but had it been a normal weather the result would be different...some humans sweat a lot more than others..and if you follow tennis or nadal you would be aware..apprently you forgot nadal was up 5-1 in the first set..once you start to loose excessive fluids you start to cramp or can't play at you're best.

19:13 djokovic injurys nadals body in that match with long rallys like by the us open final 2011. Nadal could only not good move in the last 3 games in the last set when he take it foot bandage off. Thats absolutely 100% correct il go into slight detail here. Now before ppl start picking on me let me clarify im a fed fan. So having said that i know this indeed was a heart breaking loss for Rafans as they are called but this statement is so true. Ok Nadal was perhaps not 100% in this match or even in this tournament but he has won this thing many many times in the past with worse fitness probably. If you recall in 2020 he actually changed his shoes in between the tournament because his foot was bothering him then too. What was the result he won the whole thing without dropping a set and he whooped djokovic in similar conditions in the final then. Djokovic absolutely Raffled Rafa here moving him left to right again and again. Djokovic played perhaps one of the smartest matches of all time vs Nadal he out rafad Rafa on clay hitting his forehand wide instead of deep to Nadal’s backhand really stretching him out constantly to the backhand side which caused the injury in the end. Nadal may never have been stretched so much in Philip chatrier the way he was this year playing at this level. Conditions perhaps helped Djokovic here to execute that game plan of dragging nadal wide as Nadal’s ball perhaps did not jump as high as it would have, had it been hotter but then again go back to 2013 Novak nearly beat him there when it was as hot as could have been. I therefore Whole heartedly agree with the statement that it was Djokovic who pushed Nadal to His Absolute physical limit ending him physically in the end, much similar to that 2011 US open final if you want to compare. No one even mentioned Nadal struggling physically in that tournament as he cramped in a press conference and then looked completely done by the end of set 4. Everyone was praising how good Novak had played well he deserves the same appreciation here even More than that IMO. Nadal will always be king of clay no question but Novak has been the king of kings at times beating Nadal here and federer at Wimbledon.

Not Nadal's best. Too much on defense and he looks tired. He also doesn't like it when it's dark at night and not sunny, as it should be when playing on clay.
