DJI Mini 4 Pro Active Track 5 Mile Test!

Is there such a thing as a Mini 4 Pro active track 5 mile test? YES!
There's tons of videos on KZread demonstrating the abilities of the DJI Mini 4 Pro active track feature and most focus on how the 360 obstacle avoidance helps the Mini 4 Pro navigate through wooded areas and other things while maintaining its active track fix on the subject. Well, we wanted to know if the Mini 4 Pro active track is capable of following a subject over a long distance or if it'll get tired and quit. So, we went to the beach (perfect test spot) and tried to follow our 2020 Ford F-350 dually with the DJI Mini 4 Pro we so affectionately refer to as Dwight. Oh, and Kelshaw came along for the ride. Someone had to drive, right?
Anyway, follow along and see if Dwight was successful or if he failed. You may be surprised by these results. We want to apologize in advance for not using the DJI Mini 2 drones (Jack and Rose) but rest assured we will be using both of them in the near future. And we are using the DJI Fly App 1.12.2 version for this test, so at least they have that in common.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, guys. We really appreciate your support and kind words. We hope you have a great week and God bless!!!

AWESOME AWARD granted! I've been flying my M4P around my house and neighborhood but have a busted leg I can't put weight on, so all the "fun" stuff I want to try has to wait until Spring. It was great to see this test done right. I appreciate you doing this for us!

Great video Kevin! That Active Track is so cool, and so is the wheel, where you can move the drone around the tracked object for a different view. I've got to keep saving my pennies and get me one of those Mini 4s! Love the display on the RC-N2 controller too. I was hoping you changed the home location so it wouldn't take off for where you started from. It's so nice to have a driver so you can control Dwight. Even though he didn't make the full 5 miles, Dwight did a great job, and so did you. Another fun video, Kevin. Great job!

Yea, man you need to save those pennies!!! This drone is amazing and I'm really happy we decided to get one... I was really surprised though, it didn't make the 5 miles... I know the wind, the slow speed (10 mph), that darn dog at the beginning and the fact that I had no idea what I was doing with active track all played a role in the poor distance, but still, I figured it would at least make 5 miles with no problem. That RC-N2 controller is awesome!!!! I gotta admit, Gary, I still am partial to Jack and Rose. I'm thinking I'm more comfortable flying the Mini 2 because I'm way more familiar with them. Maybe the more I fly Dwight the more comfortable I'll be, too... Time will tell!!! lol

Hahahaha. Don’t you feel sorry for Kelshaw having to put up with someone like me? No wonder Kristi is still on strike. We got ourselves in pretty deep here and I’m surprised there wasn’t some sort of mishap. That had to be one of the longest flights I’ve ever been on. Driving in the beach up here is awesome and I totally get the 10mph speed limit and all, but man, that’s what cost us the goal I think. If we just could’ve sped up to 15 or so I think we would’ve made it. I’ve seriously seen videos with the 4 pro where guys flew it out 5 miles and it even had battery in reserve when it got home. Maybe those guys were lying or something but they all seemed legit. Oh, and I love your future Mini 4’s name. Classic! Eventually, we will have Bo and Luke and maybe Kristi will have a Daisy. That would be a dream come true, eh? Lol. I may be in la la land though because Kristi has named all 3 of the drones. I don’t think Bo and Luke are even on her radar. Being THAT CLOSE is actually MUCH MORE disappointing than not getting near the goal... you know? Question: Standard Battery? Or Plus. I have 3 Plus ones, planned to buy a 4th - but wanted at least one standard. Know why? Im glad you asked! Because the standard battery makes the Mini 3/4 noticeably quieter. Negligeable on the DB meter, its because the drone works harder to lift the extra weight/load of the heavier batteries. Not only quieter with the light battery, but really obvious pitch difference. The drone literally sounds way chill 😎 with the load off its props.

Did you notice when I called it and got out of the truck and started to pull it to the truck, the emergency landing had started and he was coming down? I didn’t even notice that. If we had waited a few seconds longer he probably would’ve landed in the sand and I would’ve been confused yet again. Lol. We only have the regular standard batteries. I haven’t compared the sound between the 4 and the 2 but the 4 seems quieter to me. At least with this battery. Lol. Thanks for all your advice, John. I hardly fly my mini 2 anytime we are in Yuma, Arizona. Military air space is almost everywhere here. And we are here all winters. It was 91 a couple of days ago. • @WeretheRoberts

Yea that military air space makes it tough. We live in a farming area and there’s a small airport down the road for the drop dusting planes and stuff so I can’t fly at home either. Booooo!!! We moved from one air space to another lol. I wasn’t even aware of this small airport out here until after we moved in either. At least here they’re small planes so it’s not nearly as loud as the place we lived at in the camper. We use the GoPro 9, also and since we’ve figured out the quirks it has, we like it enough to keep it till it breaks. Our main issue with the 9 is it likes to overheat which I’m sure you are familiar with. And we’ve had 3 batteries go bad on us for no apparent reason. What’s funny is that the batteries that have gone bad are the GoPro batteries. The after market cheapo batteries we’ve gotten from Amazon have lasted the longest. Disposable world, eh? Ron, it’s always great to hear from you, buddy. We hope you can stay warm this winter but 91 is way too hot. Hahaha. God bless!!!!

Hey Kevin. Im.not all the way through (but I will, since it matters to the all powerful Oz... er, uh... Algorithm, yeah. Thats the ticket. Anyway you know I try to send a tip whenever I hsve a useful one. Here you go: You dont HAVE to track in Trace Mode - with Active Track 360 it will keep TRYING to track from the 8 directions on the compass wheel inner outter 360 tracker direction thingee. But Alternately, you can STILL fly Parallel- where the drone with Stay put exactly in relationship to you, no repositioning, circling etc. Yes it CAN be from the side, but really from anywhere within reason, and Parallel Tracking will not Pan/Yaw the drone. It will stay, for example to you right front, if thats where you put it. Heres the big tip: HOW TO PUT MINI 4 PRO IN PARALLEL TRACKING MODE: In Video mode (doesnt have to BE recording, but in video, ready to record) draw a box around the subject, you, car, etc. Watch right above the Focus track Bar [TRACK SPOTLIGHT POI] When you tap track, just above the bar, you will see TRACE - PARALLEL. Tap Parallel. Now you will not have the distraction of the Aircraft trying to stay in a position, movibg around as needed, bit staying in the position chosen very consistently, always wuth the same position in relationship to the subject. Its not "Better" or "Worse" - just a different behavior, with less need to constantly adjust. You wont see the "Strong Environmental Interference message where obstacles are keeping it from flying in the chosen position (it has NOTHING to do with signal strength, the translation to English was quite confusing on this one. They mean "environmental stuff is in the way" -lol.

Great video! I wasn't sure if it was going to do it in those winds, but it was awfully close! I was going to mention to change the return to home to the controller but that would've screwed up your test of the distance. However, I'd retest it and instead of using the drone distance because that's not 100% accurate, use the trip odometer in the pickup. You'll get a better idea because the drone distance is going to be the straight line flight back to the home point. Unless you already did that and I'm an idiot lol. Love you guys!

  • @WeretheRoberts

    @WeretheRoberts

    7 ай бұрын

hahahaha!!!! You're not an idiot, man! You're just looking out for us, brother and you're right about the truck being more accurate on distance... With the beach being so straight though it could be close. Those winds killed that battery. I've seen videos with the Mini 4 Pro flying over 25,000 feet one way then returning home with battery to spare. I was afraid it would lose a lot of battery when I moved from back to front to the side and stuff, but the wind did way more damage that that. I was surprised we didn't make it 5 miles. The slower speed of 10 mph may have also played a factor. I remember someone mentioning a long time ago cine mode is harder on a battery than normal mode so they could be onto something. Wonder if the Mini 2 could still go 5 miles with its older batteries. hmmmm lol

Interesting video. You know that you can change the home point as you travel by going into the three dot part and updating the home point to your controller. That way it won’t return back to the original home point .. odd to see the East Coast beach scene (North Carolina ?) where you can drive on the beach. That is verboten in California unless you are a rescue vehicle.

  • @WeretheRoberts

    7 ай бұрын

Hey, Don! That’s a really good question and I’ve been asked about my status a lot lately. Lol. We are purely recreational at the moment and I’ve gotten the TRUST certificate to be compliant. All of our drones are registered including the sub 250 gram drones just to be ready when I finally am able to take the 107 test and become a real professional. Lol. I’ve actually studied like crazy and signed up for the test on 2 separate occasions, but both times, I was notified a day before my scheduled test and was told it was canceled because the “instructor wasn’t available”. I was refunded both times but that has really put a damper on my spirit of being studied up just to be cancelled. Anyway, yes that’s an excuse. Lol. Once I do get the 107, our plan is to finally monetize our channel here on KZread and see where it leads. Kristi keeps telling me to buck up and get the test done because we are just giving our KZread money away to someone else. I don’t know who it is but I’m sure they’re rich by now. Hahahahaha.

Speed definitely makes a difference and the wind didn’t help us much here either. Lol. We chose a bad day to fly. Awesome comment! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment, buddy. I guess the reason for this test was 2 fold. Basically I wanted to see if the drone could track us for 5 miles but also to see if it was capable of tracking over a long period of time. The distance was relevant to the test and accurate because the home point was located back where I launched the drone. I never updated the home point so it stayed where it was originally set. If the home point reset itself to my current location, the distance displayed at the bottom left would have been reset, too. We may have had a problem if we lost our signal and it started heading home though. Lol. I probably should’ve set the signal loss thing to “hover” instead of RTH. Lol. I hope this helped, man.
