This is not the win that they think it is. I've worked in government and military contracting, there are already policies in place that forbid the use of Chinese materials in military equipment. By banning the use from all agencies that receive federal funding, all you've done is force the small town fire department to buy from the (now) only game in town, at whatever price that Skylandio decides to set. Also, now the fireman flying it isn't flying the DJI he probably has the same model of at home too, but I bet the FD can buy a training package for a tidy sum... this is an obvious lobbying cash grab disguised under pearl clutching.

This is not about your use, it's about federal gov't use. Consider a DJI drone being used by the FBI to help in counter intelligence surveillance against Chinese nationals here in the US. Imagine the Chinese gov't or military seeing what the FBI drone is seeing and getting the geo location telemetry in real time. Suppose you put it into airplane mode (assume you actually mean local data mode) and for some coincidence, it doesn't work as advertised in certain circumstances. Would not be that hard to do. Probably don't have anything that obvious in the drone software today, but it could have already been created, just waiting to be downloaded with the next firmware update whenever desired. Again, let's not be naive about audits having been performed. Those are a snapshot in time, says nothing about the state of affairs after the next update.

Alexa spies on us way more than our DJI drone does. Although if these local, state and federal agencies cant use or purchase DJI it doesn't stop those entities from hiring 3rd party private pilots from using DJI equipment. Unless that is buried somewhere in the bill. Or best guess is that the local and state agencies will figure out some way to skirt around the ban and just use them anyway. Its going to be interesting thats for sure.

I’ll be honest I haven’t read the bill because let’s face it those things are written in a different language and are too long. I guess my question is with this bill any agency that takes federal money can’t purchase and use Chinese drones from this point forward or is it retroactive to cover anything that’s already been purchased and currently in use? I would really be interested to know that part.

DJI's systems are highly respected and reliable systems that have a lot of capabilities. We as pilots, users and people who may benefit from these aircraft need to speak out against those who would pass this legislation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Russ (hope things are ok these days) Could you share the link to the drone laws by state that you showed at 6:40 ? I was shopping for a new consumer drone but if I eventually want to fly commercially, I would like to invest in a drone that doesn’t limit my client base. I love DJI (the Mavic 2 Pro was a favorite of mine) but if I can find another company that matches the same quality, reliability, and usability then I am open to trying something else too.

As part of that "ban" on drones, there really should be a waiver process included to allow exceptions for emergency services (search & rescue, etc) and others. As you mentioned these are critical services which could well be impacted by a total ban. They are also services which could easily create an air gap between drone activity and internet connections so as to make data transfers offshore impossible, making the need for the ban unnecessary in the first place. Glad you're taking the time to discuss this topic and bring challenges to the forefront and sorry someone has pushed legislation without considering the impact to certain critical services. Thanks Russ.

DJI going open source is the last things that's going to happen. In the 3d printing world, the Chinese company Bambu Lab, which is founded by former DJI employees, joined the competition last year. Their products are pretty good and fairly polished, similar to DJI drones, but they are closed source (except the things they have to open source), and they do everything to keep it that way. And there is also concerns about data security, since you have to connect to and run everything through their servers if you want to use all the functions (there is a local-only mode, but with limited functionality).

I found that funny seeing that law, but the reality is, if the law is not there we can not stop someone from doing that. I read the Google guidelines and this one I find useful. I might be interpreting this wrong, do not upload videos that contain areas that are considered a spot where privacy is expected. So I am confused about privacy fences in people's backyards. In regards to recreational drones used for personal photography and videos, do you think that state and local officials view us as a danger to public safety? For example, I have had discussions with "drone haters" who argue that my interest in aerial videos is foolish and mindless and is too big a risk to be allowed in public. Even after explaining to them that I have a Part 107 drone license and know how to safely operate my drone, they still tell me I shouldn't be allowed to fly. What matters is that numerically they are insufficient to have an effect on the laws. You can start by asking them how many people have been injured by drones. So there goes the safety issue. This portion of the bill was a lobby effort by American drone companies. This frustrates me because in America, most of us would PREFER to buy American made products, and we WOULD, if they didn't completely SUCK. If Skydio, Brinc, etc would spend half as much money and effort into making a BETTER PRODUCT as they spend in lobbying for their own monopoly, more would buy them. This bill essentially destroys drone programs for MANY agencies and groups that could not afford anything other than DJI. And many of these agencies are literally saving lives with their current drone programs. It's a damn shame. At this point DJI pulls flight path info and data acquired since last log in. China keeps all that data stored from every flight from every DJI drone. I suspect that means that it will bypass googles security tools that they give us, such as truly removing the software. The proper way to truly removes software that was installed without an OS supervision is to format the hard drive then reinstall the OS. I have no idea how to do that on a phone other than the factory reset. I am used to pulling out a physical hard drive in a computer, erasing it with a good conputer, then putting it back in all clean, and installing it. Yes, we are all afraid of the overreach and control of any governmental agency. Unfortunately, we are caught in the middle of this mess. As you very well stated, most of the congressional members have yet to learn about drones or how they function. Every drone on the market has chips made in China, so does that mean every drone should NOT be allowed to be used by the government. After the drone is sold, all chips can be reprogrammed for those wanting to do nefarious things. I wish you and your family a happy, safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year!!

I see some government agencies having some issues with this 🤔didn’t anyone in these agencies that utilize these drone say anything or did they just figure that the bill wouldn’t go through🤔

I already decided I'm not spending any more money on drones because they are always coming up with some way to ban them or restrict them. For a free country they are always banning something. It's a wonder we can leave our house without calling up somebody to ask if it's ok anymore.

Just another demonstration of how well our Founders knew how power corrupts people. I should say "How easily people will sell out their honor."

As someone that works with drones for a government agency I can assure that the DJI pilot and DJI fly apps do make connection to a Chinese government website (but also amazone) when you use the app. (This can be checked with a port/traffic scan)

I am for the band. However there should be more competition open in the government rather than just one company. Sounds like a $700 toilet lid deal.

It is concerning that the DJI Geo Zone maps show all of the Minuteman Missle Silos as Military Installations... specifically noted in Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska. It is hard to believe that the US Government would provide those locations to DJI... However, it's apparent that they did indeed.

This is one of those days when I'm pleased that I live in Canada. The lobbyist in Washington write the legislation on behalf of companies and corporations and it gets enacted.

At only 24 seconds in to the video my first response is that not only should we be worried as recreational drone pilots but as human beings. The governing bodies making decisions on laws are corrupt and broken.
