DJ Tips - Pioneer DJM-S9 vs Rane Seventy-Two

Музыка

Once it was announced the DJ community as a whole started to wonder how the Pioneer DJM-S9 vs Rane Seventy-Two compare to one another. Both of these Serato DJ Pro mixers share a lot in common, but still manage to separate themselves with unique features. Check out my comparison and which one I think is best!

    Great comparison between the two. Thank you for the taking the time to do this. I am in the market to buy one. I'm in no rush. I've been watching as much video about the 72 as much as i can. However, I still can't decide which mixer to get. I've been due for an upgrade ever since I purchased my DJM909 back in 2006. Love that touch screen feature, but really don't utilize it that much. I've pretty much set my favorite efx vs trying to utilize the 50 different efx, which is not truly useful. Been a Pioneer fan ever since and trust that it won't malfunction on me during a gig. As a matter of fact, it still works great to date. I've never used a Rane mixer before. Well, I did once but just for a few mins. You can say no experience w/ the Rane. The 72 sounds like the ultimate mixer in this era. I feel I would be up to date if i buy this. I do need to get outta my comfort zone and try something new. Anyone's opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Nice review - just a quick note... You can adjust the Auto Loop button on the S9 to grab a different length loop (adjustable to whatever length is selected in Serato) instead of always defaulting to 4 beat. You just need to adjust it in the mixer settings.

    What are you're thoughts on this now I have a S9 but I'm having issues with the serato fx side of the mixer. There is always a glitch when pressing a fx button and then it locks up serato all together , I thought it was the computer I added more RAM, nope I updated the driver, the firmware newest version of serato DJ pro, I don't know what the issue is but I also didn't have this issue till I upgraded from DJ to DJ Pro I tried to go back to DJ but same issue. Sooooo I have a huge gig coming up so I think I'm going to get a 72

  • @felrobertcasipe
    @felrobertcasipe5 жыл бұрын

    Can you show me how to trigger set cues to loop in Rane 72 just like Numark Ns7-2 with just one button. I know in Rane 72 it’s a two hand function with the knob on top while hitting the MPC pad which ever cue you set but we don’t have three hands can’t do this while working the fader. A very expensive and big name brand mixer has to do this basic function like the cheap Numark NS7-2 or did I missed something?

  • @137damek
    @137damek6 жыл бұрын

    I think cue section on a s9 is better. You can leave knob in the middle and use only fader , or opostie, leave fader in the middle and use only knob

    also the pad modes are better on the 72 the faders are all the same so are interchangeable its just a tank compared to the s9 and if anyone tell you different they just own a s9 thats why also the effects are very simple to use oh one more thing the fx paddles in the middle of the mixer they are great on the 72 metal feel solid unlike on the s9 they are cheap

    You could of save $800 and got the Rane 62 for the post fader software effects(just playing) you got a very solid mixer and at the end of the day to me the Rane is a better quality. The only thing about the two mixers is that they don’t have the effects connection anymore, I use my effects unit a lot so that why I went with Rane62 but at the end of the day to each it’s own. Good review!!!

    Both are GREAT mixers and either would be a awesome choice. If you want a mixer that is easier to use and very straightforward I would recommend the S9. If you want a mixer that has more features but is not as user friendly, I would recommend the 72.

    Pioneer Vinyl preamps are terrible and I've noticed that the S9 is no better, I never tried the RANE but I doubt it can be as bad as the S9 and the pioneer DJM new series... the old DJM-800 (and any lower model) sound far better than any of those new mixers (ON VINYL), especialy for the mid-range, this is a serious issue with pioneer and a lot of people seem to complain about it (Check pioneer's board)

  • @PDot

    No offense, but If you need to do a side by side comparison to notice the garbage sound (from an analog source) that is coming out of the Pioneer new mixers (including the most expensive models) ... you might as well not bother yourself... you wouldn't notice it.

    It's true the Magvel pro needs a few more years to be proven solid, but at the same time Rane took at step back with the faders they put in the sixtytwo. Hopefully the new faders that are in the 72 perform better than those.

    With the s9 does the inability to have independent performance pads hinder the DJ workflows? I'm torn between these two but post fader fx is really huge for me but so is independent pad contrils for the left and right side like thier controllers.

    Rane only has one input per channel, so if you got cdjs as well you'd have to plug and unplug stuff, where as on s9 you just mix and match on fly😉 also you can midi map 16 x 4 on s9 on rane you map only 16 and lost dedicated loop buttons, just a thought

  • @DJLickweed

    Doesnt the Rane 72 have 1 CD/PH input + 1 AUX (Line level) input per channel? U can use the AUX for CDJs and the the CD/PH for turntables so you don't have to do any unplugging....

    DJ Lickweed kinda true, but I got mpcs hooked up to pioneer so can dj decks or TWO mpcs or combo. rane 72 has one aux channel, pioneer has one aux channel, rane has two channel level per side phone/cd, but only one input female jacks, so to plug in cdjs you have to unplug decks, pioneer has two inputs per side so you can switch live time between deck and cdj/ mpcs just on top of unit, so I can have 5 inputs into unit not just 3, if I got rane I'd have to unplug deck to plug mpcs in just to flip between them...just a thought

  • @DJLickweed

    @DJLickweed

    6 жыл бұрын

    So the 72 has 2 double RCA inputs per channel, one is called CD/PH (can be set to either Line or Phono level) and one is called AUX (Line level only), than there is a seperate double RCA Line level input called Session in (on the S9 this is called AUX In). So essentially on both S9 and 72 you can have 3 seperate double RCA inputs, 2 on the channel faders and 1 on the Session / AUX input :)

  • @InkyDaCaT

    @InkyDaCaT

    6 жыл бұрын

    DJ Lickweed kinda right, but you have to switch tiny switch on rane and only one set per channel of rcas....so rane got 2 + aux physical inputs, s9 got 4 (so two on each fader) + aux inputs look at back of both units😉 so no unplugging decks to mix cdjs or mpcs! It doesnt matter if you just deck only but if my mates want play cdj oor mpcs I'd have to unplug and plug stuff on rane in live time...just a thought

    lets not lie here the biuld quality of the s9 is shocking its bad all plastic cant see it lasting more than 5 years before it gets battered and the 72 wow completely different all metal construction with the added touchscreen which let me tell you is very useful no looking at laptop all the time and most important for me the sound quality ive noticed other people mention this but if you have owed both you will know the 72 has amazing sound quality compared to the s9 and with vinyl too
