Love the setup! Saw your video and got the inkbird and same pump. Only issue idk how to get the pump to stick to the inside of the chest. Any ideas?

Does the filter have suction cups on it? If so, and the inside of your freezer walls aren’t smooth, then I’d epoxy a small piece of plexiglass to the inside of the freezer for the filter to stick to.

I just watched your video I know its been some months since youve done this.. I love the look. Imma try and do mine somewhat like this. Although may not look as good but its worth a shot. Question: For the drain hole opening what size did you use for the hole dozer? Also, for the last piece of wood at the very top is that a tongue and groove or what did you use? and which silicone sealant did you go with? The clear or white one? Thanks for you help.

Thank you for watching and for your kind words! For the drain hole opening, I bored a 2" hole. The last piece of wood on the top is a piece of T&G that I ripped down to fit. The trim around the edges of the lid is 1"x4", which I ripped down as well. Regarding the silicone sealant, I went with the clear. I've heard the white yellows over time. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It took 24 hours to cool the water down to the low 40 degrees Fahrenheit and two days to get it in the mid 30’s.

no issues with the thermatat and power cord getting pinched? looks great!!

Thanks! There is a soft insulated seal around the lid, so there are no issues with the cords getting pinched when the lid is closed.

Great video. After 6 months any leak issues? Do you use any chemicals in the water? How often does it need to be changed? Do you think ozone and UV are needed? I'm gonna do one soon. Looks great

Thank you for your kind words! After six months, I'm happy to report no leak issues so far. I don't add any chemicals to the water. For water treatment I only use the Coospider Aquarium Filter, which also has UV. Typically, I change the water every three months. How does the InkBird thermostat work? Are you pluggin it into the wall, and then the freezer plugs into the thermostat? Or, is the InkBird cooling the water?

The InkBird plugs into the wall and the freezer plugs in to the InkBird. You will set your desired temperature on the InkBird and it will cycle the power to the freezer based on that temperature.

Do you just set the inkbird to your preferred temp. Or do you need to also turn the chest freezer dial on to cold

Yes, I sent the Inkbird to the desired temp and set the chest freezer dial to the coldest setting.

Great video, and very inspiring! I’ve been taking cold showers but I’m not getting what I want out of them. I guess my only question is how is your setup holding up since your build? I’ve seen people say wrapping in wood is a bad idea because of heat retention, and could be bad for the freezer. Again, great job on your setup, and thank you for posting!

Thank you! That's awesome that you've been taking cold showers. Just like you, when cold showers weren't enough for me, it was time for a cold plunge. Since the build, the freezer has been holding up great. I understand the concerns about using wood around the freezer. I included a gap between the wood and the freezer to allow for air circulation, which I believe helps keep the freezer from getting too hot. So far, everything's been just fine. Best of luck on your cold water journey!

Thanks! I'm not to worried about the wood wrap. I ensured that the freezer's ventilation and compressor compartment were not obstructed. I left openings in these areas and did not cover them with the tongue-and-groove material. Additionally, I installed spaced-out 2x2s on the freezer's surface first to keep the finished material off the freezer walls and to allow for some air movement. So far, everything is going well with no issues. I suppose time will tell if any problems arise.

Hey Josh, I noticed you listed the Sikaflex 291 on your Amazon list. Is that a better choice than what you used?

I believe so. That’s the one I intended to use but Amazon sent black instead of white so I picked up a different sealant at Home Depot.

Very cool! What tool did you use to cut out room for the vent? Circular saw?

I used a jigsaw. You could probably use a circular saw as well.

How could have you been able to maintain it at its lowest temp?

Love the build, man! Nice work! Question: Did you look into any other filtration for it like Ozone possibly? I’ve seen others use Ozone but wondered if you went the other way for any particular reason I may be overlooking.

Thank you! I did consider using ozone but ultimately decided against it. Ozone can be effective, but it has some drawbacks, like being less reliable in certain conditions and potential health risks if not managed correctly. I opted for a more traditional UV filter, which has been working great and is easy to maintain.

@@projectcameron Got it! Yeah that was my only hesitation was possible health concerns. But seems like as long as you run it well before getting in, should be safe in theory. I was going to use the UV you used, but my freezer is smaller and not smooth interior for the suction cups.

I have that ink bird and I've tried getting the thermostat to turn on the freezer and nothing. Any suggestions? The water in the freezer is 32, and I set the thermostat at 20F just to see if I could get it to turn on as a test and nothing

Hey Kent, did you get it working? I know on the InkBird cord there’s a heating and cooling outlet and you need to make sure you’re plugged into the cooling outlet.

@projectcameron yeah I think so. The "lag time response" was set at 5 minutes so I was impatient and not waiting for the thermostat to kick. Once I changed it to 1 min delay, the thermostat kicked on.

So I see you didn’t do any sort of pondshield or jb water weld for seams. How is that holding up? A lot of the other forums said just using silicone wouldnt work. How is your setup holding up?

It's been seven months, and I've had no issues with my setup, at least not yet. When I change the water, I inspect the silicon, and it's holding up great.

It's been awesome! I haven't encountered any issues so far. The filter has been working better than expected, and I can use the water for about eight weeks before needing to change it. I could probably go longer, but there's a bit of sand and dirt sediment that accumulates in the water over time from getting in and out, and it bothers my OCD. 😂

whats everyone's fascination with JB water weld?? it looks crap, like someones stuck used gum all over it. Use proper epoxy resin & filler/fiberglass tape. Just like on boat hulls for decades.

Has the silicone failed yet? Just curious. I’m pretty sure others have found silicone to not hold up, just wondering if you found the same results?

Yes, that’s one of the downfalls of the wood on top. That’s why I need my stick to prop the door open. I’m looking at making something that attaches to the side of the door, kind of like a kickstand, that will help keep it propped open without needing to use the stick.

I see you shared the outside dimensions, but could you also list the inside dimensions? I am 6'5" tall and 215 lbs. Wondering if this freezer would be sufficient for my body size. Thank you!

The inside dimension are 21.5” wide, 49.5” long and 25.5” deep. I’m 6 foot 175lbs and have good room in my freezer. My arms do touch the sides of the inside of the freezer slightly.

It's been seven months, and I've had no issues with my setup, at least not yet. With the UV filter and no chemicals, I'm getting about three months out of the water before I need to change it.

Is it normal to have some water dripping from the drain plug at the bottom of the freezer? I imagine I didn't seal it well enough if that’s case, if so what are your suggestions on fixing this issue? I’m not losing any noticeable amount of water but there’s definitely water dripping out from the bottom drain. Thanks !

Mine drain plug leaked as well. I had to buy a small little rubber washer for the drain plug and that fixed it.

It was a small rubber o-ring. The size was like 3mm x 1mm.

The wood paneling will prevent cheat exchange and your freezer will have to work much harder to keep the water cold.

Is it normal for the ice bath walls to get extremely hot? I just did you exact build with a new chest freezer and when running the outside gets extremely hot to the touch.

Mine gets warm but not extremely hot. Did you use the 2x2 strips to attach the tongue and grove? If so, I have seen other people install vents in the last upper row of the tongue and grove between the 2x2 lath. This will allow heat to escape from behind the siding. Also, be sure not to cover any of the exhaust vents for the cooling motor.

Neoprene socks are the best. Also, what are your thoughts on encapsulating the freezer with all that wood as it retains the heat? Perhaps the horizontal pieces are gapped enough? Great video. But really surfy booties or cheap neoprene socks can keep you in longer. Cheers

I've heard of others using neoprene socks, and they definitely help take the edge off. Surfer booties would be great for when I do my cold river plunges. I was aware of the potential issue with wrapping the freezer in wood, but I was willing to take a risk for the sake of aesthetics. I included a gap between the wood and the freezer to allow for air circulation, which I believe helps prevent the freezer from getting too hot. So far, everything has been just fine.🤞

I don't have any plans to at this point. My current setup is getting about eight weeks before I need to change the water. I really would want to go much longer than that without draining it, giving it a good wipe-down, and filling it with clean water.

How much do you have wrapped up in the whole thing ?

$600 for the freezer - $180 for lumber, nails and screws - $100 for Inkbird and water filter - $100 for stain, silicone, liquid nails ect. Total: $980.00

I use a battery powered pump to empty most of the water, and there is a drain plug at the bottom that I use for the remaining water. I change the water approximately every three months.

I sealed the edges of where the drain plug fastens to but not the drain plug itself. I did add a small O-ring washer around the plug to keep it from leaking.

Does the filter move water enough to prevent stagnation and it dropping below freezing? I’ve seen others plug a pump into the “heat” port on the temp control module so if it gets too cold, it’ll turn the pump on bc moving water is less prone to freeze solid.

I have my Inkbird temp controller set at 34%F and currently the filter is always running. So far with this setup my water is not freezing.

The caulking you used to seal the tank... did you research it to ensure that it does not release chemicals in the water that your body will absorb or cause skin irritation? Did you research aquarium sealant or food grade caulking?

I have observed some builds using food-grade sealants, and while I considered this option, I ultimately chose to use a regular silicone sealant, similar to the type used in bath or shower applications. My concern was about the effectiveness of a food-grade sealant. Since the sealant will be in cold water, not hot, I am not overly worried about the release of chemicals into the water.

Jb weld water weld followed by non toxic pond shield overtop after cured is the way to go!

nice. love it. my only concern is you better make sure that top cover is accident proof! a piece of wood is not gonna do it! hate to see you trapped inside there! you need to work on that lid from ever closing while you are in there. all i thought of while watching your video was WHAT IF THE COVER FELL WHILE HE WAS IN THERE?! Could he get out from inside by just lifting it or does it create a vacuum that cant be opened from inside and traps you? Other than that, definitely love it! great work skills you have too! Good job!

I'm currently experimenting with different ideas to ensure the top cover is secure and safe, preventing any type of accidental closures. The lid does open pretty easy though and does not seem to create a vacuum. Your positive feedback means a lot to me, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video and the project. Thank you. The only prep I did was lightly sanding the outside of the freezer to get better adhesion. I also used more weights and clamps on the 1x2 than expected. Just taping it in place wasn’t strong enough.

I kind of like the look of the exposed screws. I also felt like it would have a stronger hold being face screwed. I guess if someone wanted they could fasten along the tongue to conceal the fasteners.

I've seen some people line their freezers with plastic liners, but I wasn't too fond of the idea and didn't think it was necessary for my setup. I also like the smooth surface to which my water filter and thermostat suction cups stick.

I just got my freezer delivered today and if I don’t have to do all that extra stuff I won’t. I been watching your shorts for awhile. The cigar soaks are the best

I personally believe that many of the setups out there are a bit excessive. You should be perfectly fine with just caulking the seams. A friend of mine has a chest freezer plunge that he set up two years ago using only caulk for the seams, and he hasn't had any issues to date. Let me know if you have any other questions. Side note, maybe I need to do some more cigar plunges 🤠

After building mine I would strongly recommend not putting the facade on. My freezer is very hot on the exterior trying to keep up with the cooling. Maybe this is ok for northern climates, but in Florida this is a no go for me

Yes you shouldn't have put wood on it now you are making it less efficient for heat exchange
