🎄 DIY Wire Frame Christmas Light Holiday Decorations How To : Make Your Own Lawn Ornament Display! 🎅
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I'll show you the process of building a wire frame Christmas decoration for the yard, lit with LED Christmas string lights. I'm using 9 gauge fence or brace wire, so it's much easier than working with 1/4" steel as many others do. Everything from making the wire frame to how to print a huge design on standard paper to attaching and modifying light strings.

when I was a kiddle in school we enlarged drawings by making a grid over our smaller drawing and then making a larger grid on the target and using it as a reference for scaling it up.
I'd reccommend using individually addressable LED string lights, they are only ~$13 for a string of 50, and you can control each diode individually and set it to any color using WLED software. If one light goes out somehow, nothing else is affected and you can cut it anywhere.
This is seriously the most helpful DIY video I've seen! You are so thorough and specific (even the shopping lists!). Thank you for all your tips! Can't wait to do this!

I love this idea! It looks great !
I especially love the background music. Good stuff, Brent!
Congratulations on a great solution to Holiday decoration!! You invested your time once, but saved a lot of it for the following years! Thanks for the thorough explanation too!
Fabulous result: So bright, kinematic and proportioned. Always so empowering, memorable and satisfying to build what you want and know that there is not another like it anywhere. Thanks for sharing!
I just stumbled onto this video trying to get ideas for this upcoming year. I got a chuckle when you mentioned my channel, thanks!!! The wire frame for the train in my display is over 30 years old! We use to stick weld them with an old tombstone welder and some pencil rod! In a pinch, you can JB weld the joints together as well. A few years ago I cleaned up my frames and used a mig welder to secure the joints. We started out using miniature twinkle lights, then we converted to rope lights and now I'm back to the twinkle lights, but using LEDs. Your display looks awesome! And I really like the idea of using perforated steel angle! I may have to use that idea this year! :D

Hey! Glad to see you checked it out. The drilled angle iron made it very quick for setup and takedown. Thanks for posting your vids.
Drill screws into the plywood, and bend your wire around the screws... I find this too be easier than the staples. Blessings James... 🕊
Thanks for a consice, thorough, and well-planned project! You have given me the inspiration to jump right in ☺️
Great video buddy!
Another way to expand the size would be to find a cheap used "overhead projector" and use the drawing on it adjusting distance to get the size you like.
6' t- fence posts are dirt cheap and you don't have to drill any holes. It did turn out very nice.
Dude this awsome!!! Thanks for sharing this with us and please share more of your creations
You could get an opaque projector from a craft store for $15 and projected the image you drew on the paper onto the wood. Then trace the lines.
this was suprisingly relaxing and fun to watch. great vid!
SOOO good. thank you!!! this is such a helpful video i can't even type it all out. God bless you kind sir!
Very well produced and narrated video. Thank you for sharing, I am glad I found it.
Great Job! Looks Awesome.
Awesome video. You addressed all my questions that occurred to me while watching the video plus showed me how to do it. I particularly like the idea of printing off the project rather than projecting it to enlarge. I do stain glass and this made total sense to me. Thank you. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Totally an amazing job there my man you great thanks for the ideas.
I made my big grinch display using an old school overhead projector I picked up from FB Marketplace for relatively cheap. got some clear binder dividers, and traced out the image from a printed picture. Cleared out a big enough spot in my garage to set up the projector, and set my board up against the wall and went to town tracing the projected image out. Worked like a charm, and I bet the same idea could easily be incorporated into this sort of wire frame design building using a sort of peg board with plywood and screws/nails to hold the wire in place as you bend it around.

Sounds like a good plan. I think you'd need to be careful that the screws/nails didn't force the wire into shape as you went. Don't want to build tension into the design. Would probably greatly speed up some of the process.
You did a great job!
Awesome video. I was thinking about creating something for our lawn this year and am getting started early. Glad to say that I am following your advice given at the end! Thanks!

What I did was just continue using the entire string of lights as far as they would go and just remove bulbs and swap them out with the color I needed from the other strings. Worked pretty good and seemed to make the process a little easier

That looks amazing! I love the heavy color from the spacing you used, but totally understand how much work and frustration it can cause. Great, fun pattern. Looks pro! I really appreciate the info about the electrical and snipping where and capping off. I'm not fond of doing electrical myself, but any info like that is appreciated.

I use the Home Depot steady lit lights on all houses wreaths and bushes/garland etc! They have worked for around 5years so far! 90 days max! Definitely don’t use regular led lights! Commercial would be better really I need to get a welder and do this! Also couldn’t you just use some pvc clear or something to make the frames? Killer video! I appreciate the detail! You gained a follower just cause that detail!

I'm sure you could use other materials for the frame. I think the wire shown is about as cheap as it gets for something that I know is durable and fairly easy to work with.
I believe the smoke from welding galvanized is comparable to spider web. In fact, the smoke does appear slightly stringy on occasion.
This is awesome! Merry Christmas

After having it up for the holidays and now in storage; I have no complaints. Sure, the 1/4" steel would be very sturdy, but this seems to work fine for something this size.
great video i am so going to try this next year, I have been watching people the last 3 months and ive already done the 6' gingerbread for our whole family, large porch pvc wreath thats 8'tall and 10' wide, and the large 7' tall pvc Christmas Trees. I am going to continue to do my research here and right after Christmas buy all the additional lights i'll need for next year again thank you for this vid

Well, I have to say it turned out amazing for your first wire frame Christmas project. And it seems to me that giving up and quiting isn't an option for you, a lot of people would have. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. Be careful, stay safe and keep the rubber side down. 👍😎👍

Hi first time viewer, love your idea you do realize you could have just painted that board black and stuck your lights through it by drilling holes all along the drawing and just let that in your yard you didn't really have to make the wire frame. I really like the idea hope you have a great Christmas
@49ccscoot
Жыл бұрын
Thanks. There are multiple ways to approach it. I like the wire frame. If I were doing as you suggested, I'd end up with plywood that's thicker and trying to paint everything on it so I didn't have a big silhouette in the daytime. Not really what I was after.
That’s very nice 🛵🎅🏼🇺🇸
1/4 inch hot roll bends pretty easily by hand
Dollar Tree has zip ties also.
Grid method Draw small grid system over original size and draw a matching number of grids on larger size. Then you can copy the small squares more easily and with the reference of the smaller squares into the large squares. I’m sure that’s not a good description of what it is but you probably get the idea. If your small drawing is 15x25 squares simply upsize the squares and wind up with the same number of squares of larger size on the bigger piece.

We did that in art class back in school. Certainly a better idea than trying to freehand it as I did, but I was pretty happy with the printing. Thanks for posting though.
Cool video brother, where did you get the two stroke sign from? Merry Christmas to you and the family?

I just went on one of those custom sign sites and put it together. Merry Christmas.
It came out really good. Did you ever find out what kind of steel needs to be used so you can use clips to attach the lights? That sounds like the way to go. BTW can you share the type of welder you used? There are so many lessons a person can glean from the video. Thanks so much for sharing.

I was using a Hobart Handler 140 doing flux core. It will also do MIG. It was around $450 when I bought it years ago. Now I see it selling closer to $700. I've been very happy with it, but there are much cheaper welders out there that will do just fine for this stuff so you may want to research a little. Here's an affiliate link anyway : amzn.to/3KOEVpA I've never looked into the clips anymore. I was gonna build another, but just haven't had the time so I haven't looked around. I do know that there are clips for 3/16" and 1/4" wire frames for sure though.

@@49ccscoot Thank you Sir! Appreciate the information on both questions. I've been wanting to do this but playing with all those lights, doesn't sound like fun. I'd probably try to find lights that don't cause a lot of problem if one goes out as well. Nothing beats a custom light that nobody else has though!
Great project. Very talented man. Two questions, I'm not a welder, any ideas? Would rope lighting been easier? Or both?
@49ccscoot
Жыл бұрын
Rope lights would be way easier. The way I did it was very time consuming. The benefit is that it's very bright and densely lighted. You'll find that most wire frames are pretty sparsely lit. You may be able to tie pieces together with cable ties, depending on complexity. Possibly some sort of crimping; maybe involving metal rings to tightly crimp two areas together. Once mounted on poles, it shouldn't need to take a great deal of stress. It needs to be sturdy enough to stay together for storage though.
So great! How many hours did this take you?

Thanks. I didn't keep track. With lights like I used, plan to have a couple of days in it at least.

A few people have suggested that now. I think it's a good idea. For me, the method shown worked pretty easily and I didn't have to worry too much about knocking anything out of alignment, lighting, or buying any additional equipment.
Looks like a fun project, but at that cost I would probably end up just buying something already made.

I'm sorry, but it would have to be a ridiculous price. I'm busy and it's a very time consuming process. You may want to check with sign and neon companies for options. I have a feeling you could get something very nice and more professional.
hmmm, i thought you were going to stick it to the side of the Scooter and ride with it ^^;........................ Sad you didn't
IF EVER you want to do it again, buy a cheaper projector and cast your image directly to the ywood sheet

This seems intended to be constructive criticism, so thanks. I will say that I do my best to put in footage and not just talk to the camera, but these big projects require quite a lot of filming and some things like the planning parts aren't filmed so I have nothing to show there. This video stuff can be harder than it looks, especially when your goal is a thorough how-to. I'm sure it comes more naturally to some, but I put a good bit of effort into my stuff.
You talk to much. Get on with the building
