DIY VITAMIN C SERUM - WITH FERULIC ACID - EASY and CHEAP!

Save money on vitamin C serum by making your own! You can make a fresh batch every week to ensure it stays potent and doesn't oxidize. In this video, I’m updating my previous video by including Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid.
Vitamin C serum helps protect your skin against free radicals and gives it a smoother appearance. It's so cheap to make, the ingredients are easy to buy, and you can make it in any concentration you want.
If you haven't used vitamin C serum before, I suggest making a 5% strength first. Use that for one week. If you don't have any irritation, try the 10% strength the second week.
Make sure to use a good sunscreen wherever you apply the vitamin C serum! See suggestions for sunscreens below in the "Products shown or mentioned" section!

✅ 20% Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Serum Recipe:
* 1/2 tsp Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C powder)
* 1/2 tsp Glycerin
* 1 1/4 tsp Distilled Water
* 1/8 tsp Ferulic Acid powder (mixed with enough vodka or witch hazel to dissolve it)
* 1/8 tsp Vitamin E oil
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Recipe for the various strengths of Vitamin C Serum:
5%: 1/4 t. Ascorbic Acid powder + 4 t. Base** (** see below...)
10%: 1/4 t. Ascorbic Acid powder + 2 1/4 t. Base**
15%: 3/8 t. Ascorbic Acid powder + 2 1/8 t. Base**
20%: 1/4 t. Ascorbic Acid powder + 1 t. Base**
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the video I made a double recipe of the 20% serum which is:
1/2 t. Ascorbic Acid powder + 2 t. Base**
** The Base can be all distilled water or a combination of distilled water and glycerin (or some other thickener, such as a chafing gel).
For the 2 teaspoons of Base, I used 1 1/2 t. distilled water and 1/2 t. glycerin (for a double recipe)..
In other words, I like the base to be mostly distilled water and less than half in glycerin.

    Hello, I made this and like the others have said it does separate. I understand you are saying in response to comments to just shake it but it would be helpful to all of us to see the serum you made and to know what to expect in the final consistency of this recipe since you are showing how to make it. Unlike the fancy vitamin C serums that are clear and not milky your recipe is milky and separates. You don't say that in the video. I tested the PH and it is a bit high but it has been ok on my skin so far. I am not unhappy with it. Would you please tell us if the milky white grainy looking consistency is what we can expect from your recipe rather than just say to just shake it. I think that would be the right thing to do. Thank you!

    You have to introduce some heat in order for it to fully homogenate

  • @Jizzman14

    @Jizzman14

    Ай бұрын

    Vitamin c is very soluble in water. But ferulic acid is not soluble in water. In this video she has mixed ferulic acid with vodka (because ferulic acid does dissolve in ethanol) but it's possible it was not fully dissolved (quite a common issue) and therefore separated when mixed with the water. giving that milky grainy consistency you describe. You could try heating it to get it to dissolve in the vodka faster but wait for it to cool down because heat degrades vitamin c much faster. If you were going to try this it would be better to use pure ethanol if you have it. The point of adding ferulic acid to the serum is because it helps stabilise the vitamin c in water, it's basically a preservative, so if the ferulic acid is separating there is really no point in adding it and you might as well just include it as another step in your skincare routine outside of this mixture. In addition, vitamin e is a compound that is fat soluble and therefore most of the forms you will find it in is oil, which is what she has in this video, but we don't know which oil. This will separate from the rest of the mixture because oil is hydrophobic. Some oils can dissolve in ethanol, but there is only a very small amount of ethanol in this mixture and it was added at the end after the vodka was mixed with water. There's lots of ways to make vitamin c serum but the most basic of all is just vitamin c powder + water. Things get more complicated when you want to add other alcohol-soluble acids and fat-soluble vitamins (but there's plenty of recipes online if you want to try). Vit c+water won't last more than a week or two, but if you are happy to remake often it is really the simplest way. Lasty, any vitamin c serum should be ph 3.5 or lower in order to be absorbed by the skin. At a higher ph than this it is unclear whether the vitamin c is absorbed.

    Vitamin E isn’t water soluble, like the ferrulic acid. The formulation needs an emulsifier to allow the water based and oil based elements to mix well (homogonate). Also the pH of this formula will be too low for skin and irritating for most. 😔
