    Work continues on the DIY Tracked Vehicle. I think the engine is too big, what do you think? Can you have too much power?

    I’ve wanted for a long time to build a tracked vehicle, one or two seater, dune buggy/ripsaw style, but aside from finding an already engineered track system I had no idea where to start, it would still be a bit of a different scale, but you’re definitely inspiring me to put some more serious thought into it.

    if it doesn't generate enough power to cause structural damage, then it is not 'too much' power.. That said gearing to keep the speed sane while increasing the torque is a good idea.

    I really don't think so but I'm looking into working with two hydraulic motors to run each belt separate but I'm looking into hauling upto four disabled Veterans that are going out on elk hunts so power is a big thing for what I'm planning. Has to be built light but sturdy to handle whatever they throw at it.

    putting a hitch on that little guy would make moving boat trailers and tuff around in tight spots a dream. I bet you could even use it to pull a single bottom plow like a garden tractor. It is a pretty cool build. I have MS and am planning on building a track machine for future use to get around in the woods when I get to the point I need help getting around. It would be pretty cool to make one a bit wider with the motor forward or backward so a wheelchair could roll right up in between the two tracks. and lock in.

    Have you crunched numbers for gear ratios and such with the big engine? 150 ft-lb torque limit on the diff, I'd try to keep it under that with room to spare. For heavier vehicles I've seen chain drives off the diff to stop the diff from seeing so much torque. You might just get by with your setup given that it's a light weight vehicle.

  • @MakingStuff

    @MakingStuff

    2 жыл бұрын

    No I just chose a gear ratio with available gears that was in the mid-range. I think that this engine will have enough power that I can gear it up and get more speed out of it. Will have to wait until I get it finished.

    Looks like youre planning to use a jackshaft to get the drive from the torque converter assy to the sprocket on the diff, i'd place the jackshaft to the rear of the engine and then pass the second chain under the engine mount and straight to the diff sprocket, the engine size is good, i'd rather have more power than i need than not enough power, you could have made the whole engine mount assy to bolt to the frame though instead of welding it on, that way you could always remove it if you needed to get to the diff assy.

  • @MakingStuff

    I keep waiting for someone to make one of these using the engine and transmission off of a zero turn lawn mower. My JD Z445 has a 25 HP motor and each side is controlled by separate hydraulic motor. No differential needed. No brakes slowing one side to turn. In fact, no brakes needed at all as it uses hydraulics so slow it down or reverse one or both tracks. Way more efficient.

You would be hauling Ass at full speed and, when turning, the brake based steering would bleed off speed. Had the same thought, the "diff" appears to be an open differential, as the brake on one side applies, torque is shifted to the axle with the least resistance. This will undoubtedly cause issues with steering and driving in a straight line over terrain, where there is more resistance on one track. I suppose with constant adjustment with brakes, you could maintain some semblance of control, but I foresee some issues over obstacles... which is kinda the point of this vehicle. I think I will use independent hydraulic drive motors for steering on my project, more expensive, but I think a better solution overall.
