good tip without having to buy or make a hot knife or dremel. I guess technically it's better to do it this way to completely remove any risk of setting the plastic on fire.

Although it's way more difficult, you can also manage to cut through totes like this with very sharp, sturdy scissors and a little elbow grease. Then sand with sandpaper by hand. (If you're like me and don't have a collection of power tools... yet :P)

We made one of these for my baby boy after watching this video, and we cut a 4.25" round hole in it. He loves it and thinks it's a house to hide in or something. He used to get litter all over the floor (it's on carpet) and he would bat his poop out and play with it. His new litter box solved both issues, and he loves it! Thanks for posting!!!

Thanks for showing another way of cutting through those blanket tubs. I've been using large blanket boxes.as.litter pans for all my house cats for over 30 years...but I never had to cut an opening..they just climb up and over or if they really have to go they jump in without any problems. I also feed feral cats. For their shelters, i use a 45 and 30 gallon tubs. To make the door opening out of both tubs, I use a hair dryer on hot to heat the area where i wanted the opening and carefully use a box cuter to cut through the plastic..,amazingly, it glides and cuts through like butter.

a better way to do it is use a hot knife, they are designes to cut thru plastic, without shattering or cracking. A lot of these cheap boxes will shatter and crack if you cut them with a knife.

Thank you. I dug up a storage bin I had not been using, used soldering tools to cut the opening and sanded it down. My long-haired large cat used it as soon as I set it up and now can comfortably fit, while not making a mess with his strong kicks. Expensive hooded litterboxes were no good--this is the best!

Truly amazing how many people miss your point about it being difficult for some cats to jump out of sand. And, for the cats that CAN easily jump out, chances are that action is going to break up some of the clumps, making the scooping of dirty litter more difficult and leaving the litter dirtier. Great video. You handle a Dremel tool like a surgeon handles a scalpel. My only suggestion might be to leave the rim uncut with the rectangular cuts to provide some more strength to the box. The round hole makes for a very sturdy finished product.

THANK YOU! Yes, I have stopped replying to all of the comments about not cutting the box, it's exhausting and unkind to the cats. I have done as you mentioned before upon request. Since litter boxes should be replaced every 2 years and I do cut it so that the supports around the perimeter are there for stability. Thank you also for your kind words regarding dremmeling. You will read others comments that I do not know how to use it at all and that I am "killing my tool". Amazing how people see such different things! This definitely works like a charm! Super great advice. Thank you SO very much!! For me, my cats never used cat litter, usually poops outside in the lawn and near the washing machine (backyard) used the box just within 2 hours of setup! My family got tired of them pooping everywhere and the strong smell- so I was searching for an easy and cheap diy solutions; came across your brilliant video. I basically followed all the steps to a T. For the box, I bought a big 105 Litre (like double the size of first box in the video), made the 'entrance' by the longer side and put in 3-4 inches of rose n lemon scented litter mixed w non scented (we got the hint, they love the smell of detergent and soap hence relieving near the washing machine! Lol), and ta-da, instantly no more poops by the machine! I didn't even need to train them!! By the 4th day, there were 4-5 of them using it. So SO happy to see the results. Think I got lucky cause they could share their 'toilets' together! It must be the super spacious feeling they get from using a clear box. But now I feel they're hinting me to get another one- I'm onto making a 2nd litter box this week! =D

bro, your comment was irritating me, I said to myself wgaf about your cats and where they like to shit also why didn't you google how to get cats to use litter boxes, do u know about toxoplasmosis gondii etc. BUT THEn I read 6 years ago 2018 was a different time, a simpler time. How are your cats doing now? what kind of kitties do you have? I am a recently single 27 yo dude, im handsome (not to myself but what im told) but both of my girls (Twin Torties stubborn AF "tortietude") got pregnant before I could get them fixed. At peat cats i had nine down to 7. I'm a single man in a small town and I havce seven cats, shits weird TAKE ME BACK TO 2018

This is the best instructional video for this project. I tried to use scissors the first time and nearly gave up (Tool Phobia). Invest in the dremel. Mine came with a few tools and included the necessary ones to complete the project. Once I had the right tool for the right job I was done in no time. Now there is no more over shooting the side of the box. Highly endorse this approach.

Thanks for telling where you got your boxes. I looked everywhere else and could not find a box with a completely flat bottom. The boxes I made are about the same size but are not so easy to scoop. I've had them for years now and find a new problem that I want to point out. I cut the door on the larger side like you did and now that my cats are older (19) they step in and are facing the other wall so they don't go in all the way and just go with their back-end outside of the box. The door is probably best on the end.

We've used the really large clear totes from Lowe's and cut out an opening on the end. The 4'x2' size is perfect for our multi-cat home. If we happen to skip a day, like when we're out of town, it doesn't get out of control or make the cats look for alternatives.

Nice Job, you are very talented with the dramel tool. But you can do the same cutting with aviation snips, you still need to sand the opening. I never thought of using clear containers but that makes sense , what I have used is big blue containers that I got at Walmart and cut 6" diameter hole in the end on two of them and also one with the hole on top which the cats didn't mind at all two of the cats are in the 15 lb range and they have no problem. Great job and keep up the great work. Rick in Swansea Illinois with 28 cats that I call my kids, some are feral and just show up.

We have and have had cats who entered the box, backed up to the doorway, then pooped/piddled outside. All while thinking they were eliminating INSIDE the box. They even spent copious amounts of time scraping the litter within the box. I absolutely concur with your use of clear boxes, but unless it's for kittens, I would never cut a doorway.

You ever thought about making a “Sifter” for your cat box. I got 3 nesting containers and drilled a 1/4 inch hole every 3/4 of an inch, it is mind numbing but when your done you have a system that allowed you to clean your(cats) litter box in seconds. Place the sifter box between the two other containers. Install the cat litter in the top container. When it’s time to dump the dump, you just pickup the top container and pour the litter into the sifter/container. Then you just pick up the sifter and all the dog treats and wet clay stay with the sifter. After the Cat gifts are bagged put sifter in the empty container and put the filled container over the sifter and ipsofacto Bobs your nanny.

Thank you for the video! My boy aims high, (like, still standing) and I have yet to find a litter box high enough for him that doesn’t cost $50+ dollars. I also prefer a front entrance because we have an 18 year old cat who I’m sure would hate jumping through a small hole just to pee.

I have 6 large totes in my house for litter boxes. I kept the lids on them. I have elevator pee-ers so it helps contain the urine. They are easier to clean than the traditional litter boxes. I put box tape around the area where I trimmed the opening.

Very late here but wanted to say that you can cut through them really quickly with an $8 soldering iron from Wal-Mart, and it doesn't leave nearly as many jagged edges. Probably should do it outside, as I'm not sure about fumes, but once it's heated up, cutting plastics goes pretty fast. That thing has more than paid for itself just for cutting plastic. I've never even used it for soldering. Lol. (Get one to use specifically for plastic if you go this route though... because it leaves plastic residue all over the tip). Btw: I just found this video, and it helped me a lot. My very large cat needs an even larger box, and I'm having to get creative. Thanks!

Oh my gosh! Thank you for giving us a video with direct explicit instructions to be able to do this ourselves. Before now, I haven't had all the step-by-step instructions or the confidence to try this myself. If I need help, I can always watch the video again! Thank you for teaching us. I can't tell you how many cat litter boxes I bought for my geriatric cat with arthritis, who pees outside the box, because she can't squat anymore. (She stands inside the box, but pees outside box. I am at the end of my rope from cleaning up ammonia-packed cat urine from my concrete floor. There's hope. I'm off to the Container Store and to Lowe's.

Also, place a puppy pad outside the entrance. If she is in with all four feet she is doing the best she can and she feels she is in there. She just cannot squat low enough anymore to keep it from going over the sides. The puppy pad will catch it if she over-shoots the entrance. And ask you vet for arthritis support!

I finally made my box, but Athena still doesn't pivot once in the box...she pees on the wood threshold which leads into the little under-the-stairs room. You had suggested puppy pads, but she stops short of the box and just pees on the puppy pad. Which needs to be changed every day. I was thinking of creating a little stand-up polyurethane wooden post to stick in the litter so she would need to pivot. What do you think of this? I'm sure she's squatting the best she can with her arthritis, but I'm so done with the daily messes. I can't find cat diapers on-line. Any one know where I can get some?

I need to get a new litter box cause my cat keeps spilling all his litter out of the one i currently have, which already has pretty high sides but the entrance is too low, so this is perfect! Plus, all the litterboxes I was looking at are upwards of $40 with shipping and taxes and all of that and look almost exactly like these! I'd much rather make my own box than buy some over priced one and use the money I saved to buy cat food. Thank you for this DIY!

My cat makes a mess every time he uses the litter box...he gets litter everywhere. This is a perfect solution to the problem; and it's cheaper than buying covered boxes that are still too small. I guess I know what project my bf will be doing this weekend! 😉 Thanks for the great idea.

Did this a few years back, haven't ever purchased another type of litterbox. I put mine inside a type of rattan chest with a hole cut in the end, so you never have to see the cat's mess, but the lid makes it easy to clean.

Great idea. For outdoor cats, there should probably be 2 holes (entry and exit) so they don’t get trapped by a predator when in there.
