DIY RV Deck Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows the progress in building a deck for our Camper/RV. The Camper is in a permanent spot. The deck is 8' by 24'.
There is also a Part 2 of this video series, where I show a few updates to the deck:

Doug that looks like a pretty sweet camper and deck set up! My wife and I have a 26’ Kz Sportsman that we go camping in but no permanent setup. One of the ideas we’re bouncing around is purchasing some land to set it up on as a camp and building our forever home while spending weekends in the camper!

Yeah. Having the permanent spot makes it so nice. Not having to load/unload. Or back the camper in. We lived in the camper for about 6 weeks between houses.

Love it! Think I’m going to do a deck about 1/8 the size, just something under my awning I can cook on. Thanks for sharing!!

To me, it is just nice being able to walk into the camper without having to use those horrible steps.

It makes the camper usable to me. It was nice once I put a gate on it. The dogs could stay on it and not be in the camper for a while.

What kind of bolts and brackets did you use to attach the beams to the post?

  • @homestead_diy

    @homestead_diy

    4 ай бұрын

I don't remember the sizes or anything. But they were long enough to go through the beam and the post, put washers on both ends, and a bolt to tighten them. I know I bought them from Tractor Supply. You can buy they based on weight instead of individual pieces like at Home Depot or Lowes. Sorry, I don't have specifics, it was 5 or 6 years ago...

This looks great! Is it necessary to get a permit for this deck?

I would think it would depend on the location. Where our camper is located, we lease the lot. We have to get approval to build anything deck or anything like that.

Want to build something similar on my RV. Do you know the rough cost of all supplies?

really would have no idea with current lumber prices. When I start any larger project, I build an Excel spreadsheet. For the decking, if you know you are building 8 foot by 16 foot deck, you'd need quantity 32 2x6x8' treated boards. If you lookup the price on Lowes or Home Depot. Say they are $10 a board. You know, right off the bat, you are looking at $320 just for the decking. You need the posts, cement, railing, screws (or nails). Just build a simple list and add it all up. Most of the decking on my deck was repurposed from older picnic tables. I hope this helps. I just have no way to easily do an estimate. Although maybe that is a topic for a video. I appreciate the comment.

How far away did you take the deck to the side of the camper.. looks great

The actual deck itself is about a foot away from the camper. I wanted to provide a way to get the camper in and out. But I made a temporary/removable part that connected to the deck that took it up to an inch or so against the camper. Sorry I don't really have good pictures of this part. I just made L brackets and attached them to the deck. Then put decking on top of the L brackets. That way, I could remove it if/when I wanted to move the camper.

Should you be worried screws and nails won't hold up long term versus lag bolts? It's been theee years, hows ot holding up today?

I don't have that list any longer. At the time, I created a spreadsheet with the boards I would need. I used this to come up with with my total cost. But I don't have the spreadsheet any longer.

It is so hard to say. I got most of the decking for free. Recycled from some old picnic tables. The rest was likely a bit over $1000. For sure more than I expected. But this was in 2018/2019. Can’t imagine what it would be now.

Yep. Still standing strong. We are in the camper for a few weeks now. We sold our house and waiting to close on the new house. We need to stain it. Maybe I'll do some pics/video while we are staining. Once the weather warms up a bit.

Hard to say. This was in 2019 so everything is inflated now. Just a guess I’d say between 1k and 2k at the time. But I got most of the deck boards themselves for free.

do you remember just about how much this project cost you overall? Oh wait, you said it in the video at 9:18 before i posted my comment lol 1,000+ for the deck and 20+ for the lights

That's probably about right. Now we had the decking boards (rescued from old picnic tables) and this was also in 2019 before the cost of wood went through the roof.
