Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

Skip the yellow. We just got rid of the yellow walls we had & it’s 100% improved. I can’t see it with that wallpaper. It is YOUR place though in the end & everyone has different tastes.

Totally agree, yellow and grey for a bedroom? Of course absolutely your home your call. Have you thought of a very pale Rose? A grey with blue tones for the woodwork not a flat grey?

Personally, I wouldn’t paint the walls any other color but the “cream” background of the wallpaper and then go with a grey for the trim. With only one window and then your furniture and wall hangings, the “cream” may help keep the room brighter.

Door panels are magnificent ! Very brave to ask audience input ! Here goes ! Wall color, match background of the toil. Trim and door, grey from the toil. Cove or decorative trim at the ceiling, white like ceiling. It will lift the eye and give the room class. This is a neutral palete because of the toil walpaper. Adding more color chops the room up visually. Use any muted color for accent, which you can easily change at will. 😊

Bonnie, I agree. But dear hearts, it's your home. You want it calm for a bedroom: relaxing. If it is a homage to the Toile de Jouy then why not accent the colors in the wall paper and not contrast? I think the background color of the toile would light up the room with the sun coming through the window. It would give it a clean, crisp airy feel. But I ain't paying the bills!

Agree with sage green. It will give the gray toile wallpaper some life. I had a black and off-white toile comforter with a checkered dust ruffle, and adding a couple seafoam green throw pillows brought some subtle color to the room. Maybe I missed this in the video, but what fabrics are you using for the bed and curtains?

Those yellows are all way to bright and gold. Grey goes with a very very pale yellow. And remember the color will be even darker when you put it on the walls. You don't want to look like McDonald's! Pale pink goes well with grey. Love the front door inserts!

Hi Guys, l would go for an off white on the walls ,a darker grey on the skirting boards and door and bring in yellow on bedding, pictures and other accents. I feel guests might be overwhelmed by yellow walls. If you go for yellow ,yes a dirty yellow to catch the grey in the wallpaper. ❤❤❤❤❤

Keep the sense of the room with the walls in the same background ivory colour of the toile and wood work the gray of the toile. Then any accent colour of furnishings - carpet, curtains bedding could be in a rich burgandy to add warmth. The bed /dressing table wardrobe in a cream and gold chalky paint. You could copy the toile print and put it in tall inset frames on opposite wall 😊

Approaching your grey and white toile bedroom, I would ask a few questions. Who will stay in the room? Are they paying for the room? What are their expectations for their room, the average length of stay. So often clients will ask to do a space according to their own taste and not the taste of their customer. Often, this ends up wrong on many fronts. I would ask that you make a list of what that room will be, not what you want, but what your customer wants. As in your choice maybe bold and busy colors. However your customer wants a relaxing, quiet place. Time to reflect on what you are asking of the room.

I agree with matching the background of the wallpaper. Use grey for the wood trim and doors. Go with a neutral bedding but add the pop of pale yellow in a throw pillow or sheets. Add a pale yellow vase, etc. Let the yellow be a subtle accent color and not a saturated contrast in the walls.

Looks fantastic and facing each other is perfect. Repeat of gallery border in top would be unifying. You asked: The woodwork a shade of gray, walls and ceiling off white like the wallpaper background. Framed etchings, lovely bedroom furniture and a rug for color with linens. The wardrobe with mirrors is perfect. A bed and lamp stands in the same wood tones will be just the right look. The room being plain colors can be switched seasonally with different bed covers and accessories. I think you will love the finished room.

I find picking a color palate that is already coordinated allows for a nice flow . It has various shades and complimentary colors. The grey toile is lovely and I think a light blush of whatever color you choose will keep it open, light and airy. So much goes with grey. Pick the mood you want to evoke for the room first then go for the color.

The door panels are just beautiful, so unique. Well done.Though I’m not a fan of an accent wall of wallpaper I understand why you want to preserve its past and that’s always a nice thing. I feel the other walls should be a light bluish grey, or the cream background of the wallpaper. I wouldn’t break up the door colors. I would paint them in a shade darker then what ever you decide on the wall color. It’s a small space ( and charming too) with one window yet it lets in very nice light. Sarah perhaps take the soft yellow from those beautiful fields of daffodils Steve shared and cover a side chair with a fabric . Then pick a bunch of those beautiful daffodils and put it in a vase on that lovely window sill. I’m sure with your wonderful taste and all the suggestions it will be amazing!

I would match the wall colour to the background of the toile. I would use different shades of grey on the ceiling and paint trims - check escape to the chateau and check what they did with 3 Little Greene colours, then add splashes of colour in the soft furnishings, maybe shades of pink or a multi coloured floral for cushions. To add interest add a line of colour around the feature wall with something like grosgrain ribbon.

I googled what colors compliments yellow and grey when decorating. Hope this helps good luck. Decorating with yellow and grey home decor The color wheel points to purple as yellow's complementary color, and adding touches of purple will create a striking look. Mix grey and yellow with orange or green, yellow's two neighboring colors, for a warm, earthy feeling in your space.

I agree with the others to skip the yellow. Just pick up the grey for the trim; paint the walls the same color as the toile background [White? Cream? Hard to see in the video.] It would be calmer and good for resting in a bedroom. Add a yellow throw to the bed if you're just dying for some color. Like the idea of the door transom being a take on the art nueveau tapestries. It's looking fantastic so far.

I understand why some people don't like yellow: it can look dingy, especially if it's been in place a long time/is dirty. However, I agree with Sarah that it is outstanding for bringing a little sunshine and light into a space that doesn't get a lot of light or only gets a cold northern light. I love hearing Sarah and Steve's discussions on color and why they think some colors work in a space (hooray for judging colors IN THE SPACE they'll be used in!) or why they're not quite working! All that said, I think it's near-impossible to judge colors and color combinations without being there in person. There are subtleties of light in a space that no video or monitor will capture. And the front doors look STUNNING!

I would paint the walls in the bedroom the same as the background of the toile to keep the room light and bright, but bring the color in though fabrics and accessories. The woodwork can then alternate the gray and cream from the toile.

The door inserts are absolutely stunning. My preference would be a lavender for the bedroom, as yellow is a stimulating colour for a room like a study or kitchen, not so much for relaxation. So many great projects. I also did meant to mention some time ago that a possible solution for the missing chair rail in the beautiful cafe room could be a replica moulding made of silicone that is flexible before it hardens, like Terry and Ash used in their chateau. Cheers, from Lyn NSW, Australia

The door inserts are a true work of art- amazing and so unique! I like the idea that the herons/egrets tie into the area where you live so there is some history in regard to their use on your door. As for the wall color- I’d day no to any shade of yellow with the toile wallpaper ( although certain shades of yellow are my favorites). Remove the wallpaper and yellow paint would make it a bright and happy room. But, yellow is a difficult color to work with- it changes drastically in different light throughout the day. I’d suggest a dusty ( greyed) version of green, or a dusty greyed pale pink. Check colors on the Farrow and Ball paint deck - or talk to the specialists at Little Green for advice. I get a kick from offering suggestions for paint colors you might use! I’m VERY particular about the colors in my own home. it’s fun for me- especially when I get compliments! Can’t wait to see what you decide…. Thanks!

Love the grey toile, any colour will match beautifully with such a neutral shade. Think about what mood you want to convey, bright and cheerful or soft and relaxing. Personally I prefer a more relaxing shade for a bedroom. Please avoid multicoloured doors, they are jarring. A plain door will be more harmonious, particularly for a bedroom. However, it needs to be your choice, reflect your personalities and you need to be comfortable and happy with what you choose for your lovely chateau home xx

That was fun! And thanks for asking our input! Colors are funny, and I really hate to say it but even though I love yellow out in nature as in the daffodils and daisies and Autumn leaves, when it comes to clothing and wall colors, some shades actually make me feel a bit nauseous, same with some greens! Frustrating, but so! But as you were holding up the color cards on the wall, my eyes fastened onto a soft avocado green for the walls, that I could suddenly envision with that lovely wall paper to make a fabulous room! A little splash of yellow, a pillow or two, in pictures on the walls would be lovely accents. But just a few. Some may not see it, but I think that would be fabulous!

Not sure what kind of furniture would be in there but your color can come from the bedding and window trimmings. That's where you can go wild with the brights, or change as the seasons go. There's my 2 cents👍🏼😉

I love the idea of yellow on the walls. At 9:08 you can see yellow through the gap in the door and it looks great next to the wallpaper. For the trim--although probably too modern a look--matte charcoal is an idea. But also: glossy white is another idea. If it were me, I'd avoid gray. À chaque un son goût!

Love the front door artwork Steve, looks absolutely stunning! Bedroom color? Considering the space, used for quiet and relaxing, I am with the panel. With the feature wall being an accent, I feel the yellow would take away from accentuating it, sorry. Using the same color as the background of the wallpaper on the walls and a tone of grey from the wallpaper for basebords, door, etc would tie everything in very nicely and then accessorizing with pops of color that you can change easily with the seasons would create a nice relaxing space! Or one could choose a greyish, pale "dirty" lavendar color as Steve put it lol That would marry in well, as long as it has the greyish tones. Also liked the suggestion of the pale light pink. Could always take pieces of the wallpaper u removed and put them on several boards, select different colors of paint of choice and try them that way before putting on the wall. Do you want the toile to stand out or the paint? Good luck, can't wait to see what you guys choose! Oh the anticipation lol

A muted yellow is better as it matches the wallpaper's ground color better than a saturated yellow and it should match the value of the gray in the toille or its ground. Leave the doors a solid unless your values of the gray and yellow are equal. That will make it marry much better than a higher contrast between the 2 colors. Personally, I would match the color of the ground as a wall color and use the yellow as an accent color in the room. As to the window atop the front doors, I would scale the leaf detail from the door's window inserts to fill the smaller rectangular window. That way the door and its panels match with that window and work as a unit. That fabric trim for the walls won't last forever as a reference to the door's top window to have a different pattern make sense.

I would be inclined to go with a color similar to Benjamin moore's Grey mist...a soft greige tone off white which may compliment the wallpapers background then maybe a color similar to white dove by BM for door and baseboard for an elegant calmness. Picking color is so hard i agree but doing big swatches and sitting with them for a day or two in different light helps eliminate the good bad and ugly. I cant wait to see your decision, as you both have great taste so it will be lovely no matter the choices made. Happy renoing.

Little Green: Salix or Windmill Lane might be nice. Also, add moulding around the edges of the feature wall to ensure the wallpaper doesn’t detach faster over the course of time

if you go yellow, make it a very light yellow or a beige with yellow undertone to match the beige in the wallpaper. The door should be all one color a very light grey for door and trims. lots of work to do in your home.

I'm in the camp that suggests the creme colour of the toile background. You can add colour with your furnishings.

No yellow. The trim gray, the door gray with white or pale blue with white. The room could be a cool gray tone with a blue hint.

I love the door panels! They look so good in place. On the toile room, I still think a pale pink would be nice. Not huge on yellow so I may be bias. Blue would look good too but if you're going to paint the walls yellow please do something different with the door. I think that would be too much. I love the cathedral ceiling. That is stunning.

You can use the wallpaper that you remove and use is as inserts in framed panels for the other walls. Please paint the walls dark gray. With the inserts it will look stunning.

My bedroom at home is the palest of lavenders with black and white French toile bedding and curtains. This keeps it bright as well. If you do yellow, do a very light version of it (more butter cream) or it will appear too modern. Of course you will make the room beautiful no matter what color!

I too think a very soft pink and creamy white would lighten the room and blend nicely with the focal wall. Choosing color is a challenge.

Personally, I’d do a very pale dove gray on the walls with a darker shade on woodwork and doors. U could then accessorize in pinks, creams and grays

I watch 12 Chateau renovations and on two of the vlogs the owners chose to KEEP THE WALL HANGING WATER FEATURE..one put a "live green plant" in it as a decor feature. I saw one of these tiny high back porcelain sinks in the toilet room ..... unless you plan to use it or what it was used originally, I thought to suggest this based on two other DIY chateau owners did....LOVE THOSE DOORS !!!

I would stay clear of the yellow. It’s far too harsh for the subtle colours of the wall paper. Have you seen the lovely muted colours of the Farrow and Ball paint? I would go for one of those - maybe elephants breath which is a warm mid grey and team up with the palest blush pink for an accent colour in fabrics etc.

I think, I would paint the door in the same grey from the tapestry, I think it would be good, if the grey would appear a second time in this room, so you would be kind of free in the colours of the furniture and even the wall colour. A solid solution kind of, and I think this middle dark grey is very nice for the door… Looking forward for what you choose! :)

I agree with others that those yellows seem too modern and harsh. A cooler neutral might work better. For trim, choose one of the darker greys in the toile perhaps with a lighter grey for the door panels. You could try introducing your preferred brighter colors in toss pillows or other accessories. But I think you need to "go with the flow" of the grey for the walls and trim and keep a muted palette instead of trying to use the paint colors to wrench it around to your preferred colors. You could do it but I think the tension will make the room sizzle, not ideal for a guest room.

I would suggest that blue goes very well with gray. If you did something like a sky blue, it is a light enough color to keep the room bright. I painted a small bedroom yellow once and did not like it. I wanted a pale yellow, like a buttercup, but it was way too bright. I would suggest doing color samples on different walls for sure. I like the lilac better than the yellow, purple to me is more of a bedroom color. In fact, if you moved more toward a wisteria shade, even better.

Hey there from Minnesota! I just met your friend Willow in her shop in Lake City! She is such a sweetheart ❤️ It was fun to talk with a fellow artist and hear a little bit about her travels. You guys are doing such a great job on your home. Maybe someday I will come and do a work shop. That would be a dream.

I love the panels in the front doors! Far less of a fan of bright yellow (or bright anything) for the toile room, unless it's a darker tone like what Michael Pethrick is using currently. I think that paper needs a color with a darker base.

two of us here weighing in the room color. We vote for a light lavender to compliment the gray wallpaper. One of us is a designer. We have a room in our home with gray/lavender mix and it is a very serene and elegant combo. Which also means we are partial so yo may have to disqualify our opinions, lol!
