DIY pneumatic ATC tool holder rack for a Mach3 controlled Super Prolight 1000 CNC

A video of designing a pneumatic tool holder rack to use with my Super ProLight 1000 CNC machine which has a power drawbar spindle. The design is not machine specific, it could be used in conjunction with any ATC spindle. I briefly describe how to set it up and control it in Mach3.

Just found out about your channel. this is a pretty smart method to solve the space issue.. Could even add another toolholder on the other side of the actuator and double the slots.

You could probably re-print the tool grippers to be double ended , move the tool changer slightly left, if you have the room and get 8 tools total, two per cylinder

Thanks, that’s a great idea! Though, I ended up having to change this tool rack setup when switching to the Masso controller, so now it has 6 tool spots and an auto tool setter instead

@@diyfiberlaser Whatever works for you, I just had the idea that each cylinder could lift two tools if you have the X distance to accommodate it.

tilt cylinders at 45, hang them further off the end, get a bit more table space... relying on air bleeds on cylinders is a bit iffy. theyre dictated by pressure and friction... they tend to get sticky. lube dries out, blah blah... fine if all you are doing is pushing something, no good for delicately placing something. better to throw extension springs on to limit the lift, use the bleeder on the retract. that bit of preload on a cylinder makes it behave so much nicer. the subtle difference between pneumatics and hydraulics...

@Travis Mitch dude this is so awesome, I was wondering if you could share the CAD file or STL files you have for the ISO 20 tool holders ? The picture you showed of your BOM is pretty much everything you need for the build for the ATC system right? It looks really well made props to your creative idea and how you brought the ATC to life 🧬 super awesome

Amazing work! Quick question, how did you clean your table? It almost looks etched. Also, I did not know you are missing the controller box and card, I had a spare from my machine. I also have a SPL. Is there no issue with the different stud geometry on the tool holder from the original? Luckily my machine came with new original tool holders. One dislike about this machine, is that when cutting, chips and shoot out and make a mess lol.

I just used wd40, steel wool, and fine grit sandpaper to clean off the rust. No worries, I would have changed the controller regardless so I could use Mach3 with my tablet to run it. As they arrived new, the tool holders wouldn't fit. (I bought them off ebay: REDS ISO20-ER20MS-35 Precision Collet Chuck Tool Holder) I had to file down the pull studs slightly...now they seem to insert and release smoothly and appear to be well-seated within the spindle....I'll know more once I actually start cutting. Haha, I was guessing that the acrylic shield was going to be pretty useless for containing the mess....maybe I'll build an enclosure for it.

@@diyfiberlaser Excellent! I did something similar, but I didn’t use any sandpaper, only steel wool. At this point, it’s only discoloration. I’ve called Intelitek to get an estimate for the holders and was quoted $350 per. That’s a hard no for me lol. I’m thinking about doing the same about building an enclosure. I would love to see how you setup your electronics. I’m thinking about retrofitting mine later down if anything happens to the controller or pci card. I also hate the wire nest in the rear. The way you wire managed is PERFECT! I also want the smaller footprint possible. They aren’t that small to begin with lol.

I was replicating the design from the original manufacturer. I somehow overlooked that they designed the head on this machine different than their others, and it has a pocket to create the proper clearance for tool changes, so for V2 I got rid of the pneumatics.

I actually switched the machine over to a Masso G3 Touch. I like it, but it has some limitations...I had to redo my ATC rack to make it work with the Masso. I'm working on the video about it, should be the next one I upload.
