DIY Plywood Reptile Enclosure (Large Version)

Have you ever wanted to make a large plywood enclosure for your amphibian or reptile? Well this demonstration shows you how I built a really cool plywood enclosure for my 10 year old Kingsnake Whodini. You could modify this design for smaller enclosures as well (I will show that in a different video).
This tank could be used for an array of different environments such as tropical, desert or semi-aquatic environments to name a few. Additionally this type of enclosure is suitable for various animals because of how it's made. Also modifications can be easily implemented to create something that fits your animal's specific requirements.
I know this video is long, but I really wanted to show the project in its entirety. I also wanted to show as much of this process as I possibly could.
As stated in the intro this is a project that was conceived about 3 years ago. I started working on it nearly 3 months ago and it is finally complete. Enjoy!
If you want to see an abridged version of this build, follow the link: • DIY Plywood Reptile En...
If you have any questions let me know in the comments and I will do my best to get back to you.

So did you ever think I would actually finish this video? Lol! I know it took a really long time and hopefully you understand after seeing the final product. As I said in the video if you found this difficult to follow, I will do an abridged version of this demo for the smaller enclosures that will be stacked on top of this one. I will also release another video that goes more in depth as to how exactly this one works. Stay tuned for next week because that's when we will do the setup for my Kingsnake Whodini! For those of you you don't know you can follow me on Instagram @serpadesign for project sneak peaks, updates and more content like this. I showed snippets of this project as I worked on it and I will do the same for future projects.

At first I thought "this thing is definitly going to fall apart when he tries to pick it up". By the end of the video it was clear that you could probably park a truck on top of that thing. This design takes the word "sturdy" to a whole new level.

One of my favorite things about owning pets is setting up enclosures for them, so I love to see someone who does the same. I’m a college student in an apartment and don’t have much time or money to do the projects I would like, but I’m trying to put together some tools so I can do more on my own. I’m lucky this is one of my favorite things because at the end of the day it clearly benefits the critters, and yours are no exception. Keep up the good work! I hope I can one day do the same!

Unless he uses old lights, filament lighting, there is almost no risk of fire from the four holes he drilled in there. A 150 watt florescent bulb only uses 13-24 watts of power. It'll be snake friendly temps. Not to mention the gaps of the panel doors and thin paneling will easily transfer heat out. LED lighting uses even less wattage for the same light output. Only IR light generates massive heat. Florescent and LED lights have almost no IR spectrum light. They barely have any spectrum. Just equal peaks of red green and blue, normally. That is why they hurt many people's eyes and are often poor for growing things. Grow lights have more UV and IR and wide spectrum bands of color. Those are more expensive to produce, but still not nearly as hot as filament bulbs or halogen bulbs, which are better heaters than light sources.

You know why I keep coming back, Tanner? You explain without being condescending or making many assumptions. I am an intelligent person, and can do almost anything on my own with enough research and tools. I also understand all skills require practice, patience, and the right materials. And a lot of failure. But with your videos, I have learned how to take materials like egg crate louver panels, corrugated plastic, glues and silicones, and landscaping foam and incorporate those into some of my projects. I also learned what is the best silicone and glue to use. GE silicone 1, and Gorilla super glue gel. :) Heck I may even make a terrarium sometime soon! Keep up the great work.

I built a very nice iguana enclosure back in the 90’s. It looked like a nice piece of furniture any almost any decor. I also built a matching stand and fully enclosed hood for the light fixtures. I got a ton of compliments from both hobbyist and non-hobbyists alike. Since then, I have considered 99% of the enclosure builds on KZread either lacking in most respects or outright trash. Until now. I’m shocked at your attention to detail and overall consideration for structure, function, and forethought. Bravo! To think, I almost left your video whenever I saw that you were using 1/4” plywood...

This video has been so useful. I took inspiration from it and I'm currently building my own in a slightly different design. Thanks for the great content.

I love the detail in the video. I might try to make this with my son this summer. We are looking for a custom enclosure for his bearded dragon and this is the nicest one I've seen so far!
