Hi Jessica, if you are making a simple criss cross design with either ribbon or elastic the Dacron is not completely necessary. It is more part of the design if you choose to add buttons or pins on each cross so that is creates a 'quilted' effect. It will still do the same job either way and your sister is bound to appreciate your hard work and effort :) Hope she likes it.

Thank you for a great tutorial, I can't wait to get started! If you use paper clips, don't they break the fabric?

Hi Andreas, yes, they go right through the fabric and dacron padding and the legs spread out over the canvas on the other side. Its what gives the board that 'quilted' effect :)

You can absolutely disregard this step. It will still hold her photos and memos perfectly. It just won't create that 'quilted' look as the buttons etc you may choose to sew on won't have that soft layer to sink into. No biggie. Just use what you have - that's what DIY is all about :)

Will it affect the actual product ? Because I can't seem to find the foam like thing you placed inside. Will it be okay if I disregard that step ? Thank you very much. I hope so too :)

What can you use other than Dacron ? I cant seem to find it where i live. Please reply soon. I am making this for my older sister who is about to go to college and I would really like to give this to her.

Of course, you could use a piece of wood or even cardboard layered together. (The layers will stop it from bending) x

You could try. It may struggle to get through the thick cushioning layer of padding however if not, make sure you use lots of them to avoid too much pressure and the fabric popping!
