DIY Pepper's Ghost for Halloween

Ойын-сауық

Every year I build props for Halloween. This year I finally decided to do something I’ve always wanted to do, build a Pepper’s Ghost prop. In this video I show you how I came up with the idea, how it is normally executed, and how I designed my prop a little different.
I used a sheet of 3/8’’ plywood, some 2x4’s, 2x2’s, and furring strips. I also bought a piece of plexiglass from Ace Hardware and an LED light strip.

    Pepper's Ghost is one of my favorite effects - Halloween or not. Love the coffin inspired display box!

    Best way to cut plexiglass is to score it with a blade and a straight edge

    Thanks for the tip. I’ll give that a try next time. I guess when you only have wood cutting tools, you try to cut everything like wood. I don’t know why I didn’t think to do it that way, seems obvious now.

    I just noticed that I said "Pepper's Ghost," "Plexiglass", and "45 degrees" a lot during this video. I made this over several weeks and found myself explaining the same things over and over again once I put the video together.

    UPDATE: On Halloween night I heard a few comment about the cool hologram in the yard. It was lots of fun having this illusion out this year.

    @@CyborgVlog thanks for making this video! I've been wanting to make a really small scale version of this illusion and it helped break down the important parts a lot

    @@spencercain8177 Thanks for watching and commenting! It was fun to make this illusion, and I had a couple families on Halloween really stop and discuss how it worked. I heard a few people call it a hologram. Let me know how your build goes. Thanks!

    Is there any way to do this with video. I’m really wanting to do this for an art project and I think it’d be really cool. Would it work with a video on a screen ? Sorry if this is stupid

    Yes, you can do this with a screen on a phone or tablet. You will just need to adjust the view so the illusion works well. I've also seen it done with a projector. Good luck with your project.

    One thing you should try, is create a fake tombstone that produces ghostly apparitions in the yard. it's a different take on the Pepper's ghost effect. Add and apply white vellum poster board to the back of a tombstone. Take a projector and project an image onto the white vellum paper that's on the back of the tombstone. Get a piece of Plexiglas and aim it toward the image that's on the back of the tombstone. The image that's transferred from the projector to the tombstone is now reflected back onto the Plexiglas. What I did was, I bought a big piece of Plexiglas and put it in between two bushes. during the night time, you cant see the edges of the Plexiglas, so you don't know it's there. Kids would freak out because all of a sudden, they would see a ghost appear and didn't know how it was done. Now you know. It's a new spin on the Pepper's ghost effect. Plexiglas, white vellum paper, and projector are the keys to make this project work and keeps you from being less limited vs. the traditional Pepper's Ghost way.

    does it have to be plexiglass brand or can it be any type of similar acrylic glass?

  • @CyborgVlog

    @CyborgVlog

    It can be any brand, I was using the term generally to refer to a clear plastic material. Regular glass will work too, but it is not as easy to work with. Good luck with your project!

    @Orangeflava right, sometimes the name brand slips into common usage for the whole group of things. Like calling all plastic wrap Saran Wrap, or all soda Coke depending on where you live. Sorry for getting sidetracked, I hope your project turns out well.
