After seeing custom rope light signs for over £600, I decided to make my own for just £70 (most of that cost is the acrylic sheet backing and tools needed).
This is a super easy to follow tutorial so you too can make your own custom DIY LED neon rope sign.

I’ve watched a couple of these diy neon sign tutorials and this is the best, most detailed one. Thank you this is very helpful!
Really great tutorial - loads of little hints and tips and great detail without every being patronising - just brilliant!
Wow! I never even imagined trying to DIY these neon lights, I've always seen them on amazon and have been wanting one forever. Definitely doing this soon. Honestly I have been so scared to touch any DIY projects featuring electronic components that require soldering because it's so intimidating. Seeing you do it here really has demystified it for me! Can't thank you enough.
This tutorial was amazing! It was so informative and easy to follow. Thank you so much 💓 My sister and I followed this to make a sign and we are so impressed by your ability to do this all by yourself. You are one talented human!
I've spent ages researching so many techniques to do these. It's a minefield. There's so many different ways to do it but this is by far the best tutorial I've seen. Thoroughly recommended and nice job with your sign!
I thank you for explaing with detail the way you connect the wires and how you put everything in order, so many people just don't bother to explain that... your explanation gives confidence in trying a very small one. Your result is brilliant, literally brilliant and brilliant because it is marvellous!
Amazing tutorial!! I have been searching and searching. I have the same lights same thickness of acrylic and it’s just been sitting because I couldn’t find a tutorial to do it the way I was down it. Then I found you…thank you
My search for making led neon sign end with your tutorial.Big salute to female DIY
Definitively by far the best neon sign tutorial I´ve found here on KZread! Congratulations for the great video and the great result!

Wonderful walkthrough! I cannot believe how cheap the LED rope it, will have to give this a try!! Thank you
That is beautiful! Thank you for the tutorial!
Your tutorial is so easy to follow! Thanks for the breakdown
That looks awesome. Thanks for simple instructions!!
One of the best results I’ve seen on here without using CNC or laser cutter. If you spray paint sheet first it will hide wires at back.

you Can also get white acrylic, but for this, they wanted a clear one, so used clear wire and hid them behind the lights :D
Awesome. About to do something like this for my Ms's B-day. Your video was immensely helpful. Cheers!
Just what I needed. Thanks girl.

Nice job. Rastebator is a great tip. Thank you. 🙏 I was wondering how I was going to get a 10 foot long template printed out. 🤔
Perfect!❤❤❤❤ thank you!
This is not just helpful. This is so amazing and beautiful
A hot tip with soldering (no pun intended). If you add solder to the bare wire and the contact of LEDs before joining the two, you'll end up with a much better solder join. This is called "tinning" and also makes inserting the wire much easier because the tinned wire will prevent any stray wires from a potential short.

Great content. Thanks 👍

The sheet linked in the description is 120 x 60 cm And 0.2 cm thick Hope this helps
Im thinking black or dark smoked acrylic sheet might hide the wires better? Great video by the way.
Hi babe I have a question! Such a great video btw, thank you so much for your help. I'm just trying to figure out how the 12v lights are working on a 24v power supply? Do you have an adaptor or do you have them plugged into a 12v supply? Ive been researching for hours and i'm so confused haha.
Hi,you are very professional ,i'm zoey from china ,our factory producing neon light .thanks
Thank you very good info.
Meu Deus que delicadeza e paciência , muito lindo ...💗💗💗💗
Talented 👍🏽
good vid, simple
Great video
perfect video
so you connect each piece of LED strip to the next with wire?
You are making the soldering extremely easy and I’m real struggling with the Solder 😢
Hi Jasmine...Your Video is AMAZING and is saving me tuns of money to create signage....I have a questions...what's the longest length I can get this in...the site that you have posted gives the size, but doesn't mention the lengths...your thoughts
@_OhAbode
2 жыл бұрын
Length of rope? You can get them in 10m packs but you can just buy multiple packs so there isn’t really a maximum! With the acrylic, you may need to make it in sections, i think the longest I can get in the UK from a standard hardware store is 1.6m wide
Thanks!

love this tutorial, just wondering though. what if the section you need to go around is + or - the 2.5cm cut interval? You seemed to be very lucky with each part with the cut points. How did you manage that?
@_OhAbode
Жыл бұрын
So you can cut the tubing at any point but don’t cut the electrical strip. If you cut the strip at the next cut point you can fold it back inside the tubing that’s cut shorter. Otherwise you can adapt your design slightly x
excelente video, recién estoy incorporando los avisos en neon flex y me gustaría saber la marca de la caladora para cortar el acrílico. muchas gracias y feliz año 2022 con muchos éxitos y bendiciones. desde Colombia. me suscribo
Amazing! This is well made and definitely looks like you did your research! One suggestion I will say that will make your life way easier is to use heat shrink instead of electrical tape to cover those solder joints! Just slide the heat shrink on, then solder the wires and then move the heat shrink over the joint and then heat it with a lighter and it will shrink onto the wire. It’s a lot faster, cleaner and more durable than electrical tape as well! Great job!

if you want to use it outside, squirt it into the end cap before putting on and it will seal and waterproof it :)
do you think 16 guage wire would work? making a sign on a tight timescale thank you so much for this tutorial!

Mam aim from Philippines.. Can i ask can i use charger to convert to twelve bolts??
@davebacknolaliki1452
2 жыл бұрын
A phone charger? Noo you cannot. Most phone chargers are 5V which will not turn the led’s on. The other thing is that a standard phone charger can usually only output 1 amp of current. Each Individual led in this strip draws 20mA roughly and if it’s an RGB led on white at full brightness it takes roughly 60mA per led because 3 leds are on at the same time to give you white: Red+blue+green=white (60mA=.060 Amps) So if you have 100 leds in your strip, then .060A*100=6 Amps of current! Far more than a phone charger can handle. I recommend only getting a suitable power supply like in the video with an adapter. You can use one like her or you can also use screw terminal adapters. Make 100% sure you buy the power supply with the correct Voltage! If you give it more than it’s rated for you will fry all of your leds and you will have a bad time redoing everything. Also depending on how many leds you have and how big your sign is depends on the amount of current you need your power supply to be able to provide. So In the example above, if you have 100 leds, they require 6A, and they are rated at 12V. You should buy a 12V, 10 Amp power supply as it’s always a good idea to give you some extra room. Having the incorrect voltage can ruin your leds, having the current higher than you need will do nothing. The leds will only draw as much current as they need. As she said though do not work on or solder them while they are on just as a precaution in case you short them out accidentally.
Hello, I have tried to do it by my own but I’m struggling to make more than 2 cuts of led work, the rest of the other cuts are not working. If you can share me some advice, on my case the negative is a black cable and the positive is a red cable. I have a 12v withe the same adapter.
@_OhAbode

Have you tried swapping the wires around? Red should be on the side that’s the “bottom” and the black should be on the coloured light side. Also make sure that the inner metal if the wire has good contact with the pads in the rope, and be sure the two positive and negative, nor the solder that’s connecting them to the rope is touching as this can short out the light. If you check they work as you go, you can identify the problem pretty quickly x
This is great but I’m having such trouble soldering the wire to the LED strip…any tips?
@_OhAbode
2 жыл бұрын
Add a bit of solder to the wire first so there’s a blob on the end, then place ontop of the contact pad and use the iron to melt again x
Hi, how much of the neon rope light did you use? I would like to know if I need to order a quantity of 1 or 2.

What thickness of wire do you use? I can't figure it out from the Amazon description. I've been using a thicker one and it's making it impossible.

It’s 24 guage speaker wire xx
Hi! What font did you use on your “GARAGE” lettering?

Id suggest proper colored electrical wire over speaker wire. Just a idea but use a colored poster board on the back and push wires thru the board will hide them and give ya more contrast.

the point of using clear wire is so you dont see it.. There is nothing wrong with using speaker wire for this.
@andrescacciamani

I tried... it's way too tough. Since proper electrical wire isn't as flexible. I eventually bought the speaker wire and made life 1,000 times easier

If you used coloured acrylic, you can use coloured wire as you can’t see it, but as I wanted clear acrylic, speaker wire was much more effective
Would it be possible to use 16 gauge speaker wire instead of 24 gauge speaker wire as the link to the wire you used doesn’t deliver to my country and what’s different between the different gauges of wire?
@_OhAbode
Жыл бұрын
The higher the gauge the smaller the wire, I think! :) I made the mistake of ordering 12 gauge and it was really thick. It’s up to you, but the one I linked is thin and can be somewhat hidden as it’s clear. You don’t need that exact one, but 24 gauge is better I think esp if you can get it seethrough x
what kind of power cable adapter do i need for the usa?
