DIY Metal Foundry Project - Melting aluminum in a mini metal furnace - Roma Custom Bike

Making a homemade metal foundry or forge has never been so easy, in this episode we are going to make a foundry (mini forge) to melt aluminum and make a motorcycle piece.
We started with the process of actually creating the foundry furnace out of readily available materials that you can find in a DIY craft store, or at an hardware store or by recycling construction material.
To make the mini forge we need some sand, some refractory mortar and some water then a few other tools and parts that you'll find in the video.
The metal foundry project is powered by a propane torch.
By the end you'll learn how to make a metal foundry at home.
You'll use the metal foundry for casting some aluminum ingots, in our case we melt aluminum to make some motorcycle parts, specifically footpegs.
But before we started our freshly homemade melting furnace for the first time and we made some aluminum muffins. We tested our diy crucible and see if you can use it for melting metal.
Finally I made the actual motorcycle part by designing them and using a polystyrene mold for casting.
I tested one of those hot polystyrene wire cutting devices to design the mold that will be buried under the sand for the melted metal to take the place of.
We did a couple of tests and we put the ultimate test our homemade mini forge.
I finally got some aluminum casting for my motorcycle!
What did we do:
- Prepare all the necessary ingredients
- mix the sand, the refractory mortar and the water
- pour the mixture in the bucket
- prepare the lead mold
- pour the lead mixture
- let dry
- make a hole for the propane torch
- Run first aluminum melting test with cnc chips
- Testing operation temperature and furnace heat resistance
- Cutting recycled pieces of aluminum for repurposing
- melting aluminum in backyard foundry
- skimming the impurities
- casting aluminum muffins
- design the shapes of the parts
- transfer of the design to polystyrene
- testing a hot wire polystyrene cutter
- preparing the pouring channels
- packing of the sand around the polystyrene mold for casting
- pouring of the molten aluminum in the casting mold
- parts clean up and sending
- installation of the casted part onto the motorcycle

Quindi alla fine il problema della mancata fusione della volta scorsa era il materiale, non il forno. Purtroppo i trucioli accumulano molta aria, in genere in fonderia i trucioli del tornio vengono rifusi con pezzi di materiale pieno, immagino che per i forni piccoli serva fare un misto ?!

scusa ma facendo tanti lingotti tipo 100-200 kg si potrebbe vendere l'alluminio? a quanto lo pagherebbero?

ciao Gabry, si puoi vendere l'alluminio da riciclare ma anche senza rifare i lingotti. L'alluminio ha un costo di mercato di circa 5E al kg, quindi penserei che se lo vendi come materia da riciclo ti potrebbero dare tra i 2 ed i 3 euro al kg... ma e' una supposizione, non so esattamente. Basta che chiami una siderurgica nella tua zona

si ho gia provveduto ad informarmi volevo la conferma, comunque qui al sud mi hanno detto che lo pagano a 0,70 kg pero' essendo che lo fonderei e tolto le scorie, penso che me lo pagherebbero 1€ in campagna ho piu' di 5-6 quintali di alluminio

For the love of the sky..... per amor del Cielo.... Attenzione Carissimo Cesare ! Quanto fino ad oggi detto sulla tua mazza chiodata, non pare più sostenibile da alcune ore. Allorquando Cassazione (stigmatizzando) ha deciso: va bene il burka ma il coltello cerimoniale no. Quindi nemmeno altri oggetti di metallo duro e pesante. A questo punto, evitando di esprimere commenti autolesionistici, mi raccomando con il metallo si facciano solo cilindri per brasare il kebab. A quando la messa al bando delle moto?
