DIY Making a Printed Circuit Board

DIY Step by step of "how to" make a printed circuit board (PCB) with a laser printer, blue press and peel transfer sheet and an iron. The tricks are a clean, good quality, single sided coper clad board to start with and even heating during the mask transfer, AND a laser printer that can print straight through.

Similar to the toner transfer of laser printed image on paper to a unfinished wood surface using Acetone/lacquer thinner and an iron set on high, which will also release toner thats been printed page. pretty nifty

NICE video. Gasoline gets the toner off the board easily too.

I had a can of acetone I bought from Home depot. Melted off the toner in seconds, as well as the Latex gloves. 😆 Not sure what hand protection stands up to acetone.

shiny side of blue plastic sheet touches the paper black circuit? and how do I know if the paper sheet with the circuit goes "Straight through?" Will laying it flat on the glass type copy work?

David, the paper black copy sheet is just a test copy and placement guide so I can use a small piece of blue plastic that just covers what I need. I could use a blank sheet but I would not know exactly where to tape the blue plastic. The straight through just refers to a printer that goes straight through and exits the back of the printer so the top roller does not smear or distort the print. Jon

I'm missing something here.. I can't figure out how to get a pattern onto the blue plastic sheet using a copy machine. I never saw a paper black copy sheet. Do you mean back? So does the blue sheet react to the copier xenon flash? like sort of photo lithography? I tried making a copy on the flat glass and it didn't make a pattern on the blue sheet.

The only way I know how to do this is with a laser printer. Load the sheet with the blue plastic and print the pattern on it.

@@jtandhz got it to work. I put the blue sheet in my laser printer, dull side down (brother printer) and selected a corrected sized circuit "foil" side pattern and hit print. The circuit foil pattern showed up on the dull blue side as black. Thanks for your help.

@@DavidALovingMPF102 Great! I also found a careful cleaning of the copper with soap/water/abrasive pad, then rinsed, and finally cleaned with 91% isopropyl alcohol while not touching and leaving oil from your fingerprints helps...

Yes, just cut a blue piece larger than the design and use one strip of tape (I tape it on the top of the blue piece) to hold it in place on a full sheet of paper. Then print it on the matte side (shiny side down) with a laser printer running straight through (no bending around the rollers).

When I need to print art work for my boards, I print it out on just a white sheet of printer paper. I then take it to my local print shop down town with my blue sheets and have them print it on the blue sheet using their toner printer. Just be sure to tell them what side to print it on. I think the last time I had some printed it cost .50 cent a sheet. One sheet of paper. So if you can get more than one on the sheet, it's a deal. Hope this works out for you.
