(DIY hunting) ELK TALK - Randy Newberg's "SYSTEM" for finding Late Season Bulls

Ойын-сауық

Hunting elk with Randy Newberg during the Post-Rut. This ELK TALK video describes the most predictable time period for elk behavior. Old bulls know it is time to find sanctuary. Survival is dependent upon finding these sanctuaries where hunters don't want to go. Survival is also the second need, the third need, the fourth....... Find security with a little food nearby and you've found a place Late Season bulls will like. Late Season is when many big bulls are taken on public land rifle hunts. This period is November and December.

Thank you for this awesome series! I haven't been hunting for a long time, after i got out of the military i wanted to pick up a hobby, and bull elk is an easy otc tag to get in colorado. I have been learning a lot from your channel, the first couple hunts i did i was just loudly crashing through the forest looking for movement(4 seasons ago) . This is the first year coming up that i have been doing some serious homework on trying to find the elk, and preparing a couple months in advance. I just want to say thank you again, i feel like i am now grasping the concepts of hunting from the prospective of the elk based on their needs.

Liked your comments about observing tracks. Good advice. Thank you. Tracks can tell a lot about animal behavior. If we get the right snow, we'll track whitetails here in Maine. You'd be surprised how successful tracking can be.

Thanks. The snow always tells a story. As a trapper, reading tracks/snow is a necessary skill.

Hey randy as I’m getting for the upcoming season im seeing that my units all have a lot of two tracks on a map. Im going to spend some time in the unit and learn it better but I’ll ask you how sanctuaries work when I can’t get more than 2 miles away from a trail or two track. Will they be scattered if there’s a lot of pressure having a hard time hanging up somewhere feeling safe? Will the sanctuaries be maybe less dependent on distance from roads and more so on just the hard to get spots that may be .5 miles off the road? Thank you very much I love the insight

Randy, thanks for this excellent series. What about making one for cows?

Given the very high success rate on cow elk, it would probably not have much appeal. And, finding cow elk comes down to finding the feed. Find the feed, anytime of year, and you will find cow elk. Think grass, grass, and greenest grass.

Do they respond to calls in the late season? Since Oct is just about over, I'm going with late season tactics. This is my first hunting season in Montana and I've never had a chance to hunt elk in the past. I can get into CA blacktail no problem. Killed my first whitetail this opener, but they seem to be everywhere here. I've found some cows, but I haven't been able to locate any boys yet.

in alot of you videos you mention staying away from roads. what type of roads are you referring too? any road? forest service roads? the reason I'm asking is because I purchased an access pass to some logging property that is HUGE but there are roads everywhere in it for logging. there is tons of deer in that area and I've seen some elk here and there but not like the deer. the regrowth in the Clear cuts is great food for elk and deer alike but like I said there are roads everywhere! do you think focusing on the edges of big swaths of timber near clear cuts would be a worth while tactic or would I be wasting time because there are so many roads? and help would be greatly apprecitaed!

If there are roads everywhere, it is hard for elk to get away from roads. When I say roads, I mean roads open to motorized travel. If you have tons of roads open to motorized travel, look for the places hunters do not want to go, due to topography. That is the most likely place to find elk.

I live in Washington state and will be hunting the western rifle season this year. I was wondering if you had an opinion on what slope (eastern, western, north, south) that the elk out here would want to be on in the morning and evening, or even mid day? do they even have a preference? I haven't been hunting very long and would love your take on this. love your videos and love the do it yourself aspect of them! keep them coming and thanks in advance!

I've not hunted Roosevelt elk, if that is your quarry. For Rocky Mountain Elk, I would look on east facing slopes in the evening, north slopes in mid-day or warmer weather, west facing slopes in the morning, and south facing slopes only during the coldest winter period. Good luck.

I am looking a different units that I will apply for in elk and with some there are a lot of large and small meadows around 9-10k feet, and other units of mainly thick forest with bald mountain tops. What should I try to look for most in a late season Colorado elk hunt?

  • @Fresh_Tracks

Late season in Colorado is November. Bulls will be in sanctuaries that are on the migration corridors toward the winter range. Probably not above treeline where you see the bald mountain tops.

Would late season archery be the same? how would you get close enough for a shot ?

I'm not sure. I've never hunted that late archery season. Seems you would need to sit over water or on a trail.
