    That is crazy! I wonder if he had some kind of infection from inside? I have a deer that has a perfect three blade broadhead scar right behind his jaw. Never found the broadhead or any sign of trauma other that the scar in the cape.

    When you’re hungry, the llamas are hungry. When you’re thirsty, the llamas are thirsty. When you’re tired, the llamas are tired. When the llama jumps because it spooks, Porter jumps because he’s spooked.

    Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely agree with you that he wouldn't make it through the winter. You probably noticed how skinny his body was and how difficult of a time he had eating. His entire face was rotted out from that growth and he literally had not teeth and bones on that side. I put a bunch of images from me cutting open the growth on my Instagram page if you want to check those out. Pretty interesting what that growth did to him. He was putting all the food into trying to survive, I wonder what his rack would have been if he wasn't just trying to survive the teeth he had were pretty worn down. - Brady Miller

    I’m a bit perplexed by the series of events that took place up until Brady got his buck. So the beginning and middle of this video it appears to be late season. Snow is deep in most places. One of the guys actually says “it’s late in the season” one time. When Porter & Brady set out to hunt on the day that Brady killed his deer, there’s leaves on the aspens and appears early in the season. Snow is gone. Then Brady kills his buck and on the recovery the buck has short hair yet, definitely no later than early October in the high country. At the end of the video it’s back to deeper snow again. Am I crazy or did I miss something?

  • @GOHUNT

    @GOHUNT

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Cody. Brady responding to you here, sorry I'm just seeing this now. The "it's late in the season" reference is correct as this was actually late in the hunting season. The season in Wyoming in this area is only open from mid-September until October 6, so we hunted the last week of the hunting season. I do that for many reasons. We started hunting September 30 (lost a day before that due to snow and weather and couldn't hike in) and I killed my buck on October 3 and we hiked out on October 5. So hunting at over 10,000 feet of elevation in the mountains in Wyoming, you have the chance to experience a ton of snow and still have trees with leaves on them because these are snowstorms that just happen out of the blue it seems at times in the mountains. The day I killed my buck wasn't warm by any means, but the buck was on a south-facing slope, and thus that type of feature gets more sunlight and warmth and the snow melted on this hillside even when it was cold out. You are correct that the buck had short hair still. Again, I killed him on October 3. Also if you notice the growth on his face. It definitely hurt him gaining any fat and putting on serious antler growth. So that is why he had a very skinny body and was very unhealthy. You can see some photos of the growth and his skinny neck with summer hair here: instagram.com/stories/highlights/17881540534435542/ Typical Wyoming bucks this time of year will have a lot of fat on them. Then after I killed, you noticed that we got again dumped on by a bunch of snow. Gotta love Wyoming! We experienced a ton of weather, but that is what makes the adventure that much sweeter. A side thing, I shot a buck in Colorado in late October that also had some damage to his body, and had summer hair still on him that late in the season. The mount of this other Colorado buck even still has some of the summer hair on the cape. I hope that all makes sense and thanks for checking out the video! Always available if you have any other questions. Brady Miller goHUNT Digital Content Manager

    @@Cody_Austin very welcome! I just wish for a hunt like this to be all snow on the ground. It makes things a little easier for finding buck tracks for still hunting and spotting bucks in the thick timber. Unfortunately, I never got this buck tested. I really wish I would have saved the parts they need for testing and found somewhere to send in myself. Just to add a little bit of closure for what caused all that. And thank you! Lots of offseason practice and building consistent ammo. Always wish for a closer shot, since I grew up a bowhunter first. Brady Miller goHUNT Digital Content Manager

    Are llamas better than donkeys for cold terrain?

  • @GOHUNT

    @GOHUNT

    4 жыл бұрын

    As for cold weather, both llamas and mules are more than capable. I don't know if one is better than the other. Llamas are probably a little less work to manage compared to a mule, which can make life easier for the hunter. But on the other side mules can carry more weight. So there are pros and cons to both.

  • @GOHUNT

    @GOHUNT

    Porter is not comfortable shooting at that distance and his gun isn't set up for it. I practice all year round with my rifle, have my handloads dialed, and I am fully comfortable with that shot with my 300 Win Mag. From where we were, there wasn't an option to get closer without dropping elevation and losing sight of the buck. I still wish to this day that we had better conditions and found more deer so he could have shot something on this hunt. I'm already counting down the days until I can hunt with him again! Great video as always Go Hunt! Way to get after it Brady as always and congrats on a heavy horned muley! Def makes up for CO this last year, huh?! Good on you to take that buck. I was reading thru the comments and agree he would not have made it thru the winter. Horrible to see that growth on his face. Glad you killed him! His body size and face didn't look 7.5 years old to me but maybe that growth had alot to do with that. Either congrats on all yer hard work. You deserve it!

    Thank you, Ryan! For sure made up for Colorado. This hunt had everything I enjoy in a mule deer hunt. The harder the hunt the more memorable. I agree... even though I got the teeth lab aged, I'm not sure I agree with 7.5 either. Maybe the results are somehow skewed because all of his teeth did have extra wear on it due to everything being so rotten. Even the lower front teeth were coated with a clay looking type material. He will definitely go down as one of the most interesting bucks I've taken. I can't imagine the pain this must have caused. Brady Miller goHUNT Digital Content Manager

    Hey Jonathan. We used a Seek Outside 8 person tipi and an SXL stove. This hunt the big stove was a great thing to come back to each night! We stayed very warm. If you have any questions on specific Seek Outside hot tents, we are happy to help. All of us in the office use them on multiple hunts each fall.

  • @GOHUNT

    @@jonathanmurray7474 sorry didn't see this after you replied. The main reason is just the familiarity of the Seek Outside stoves. Brady has ran previous models of SO a bunch, and so it was just easier to use what they were comfortable with. The Luxe is a great option as well, but we haven't used on in the field personally.
