    Thank you I've been racking my brain how to get the first tile of our drywall without damaging it. This is genius!

    Glad this help but please take your time with heat and use heat shield in area that is in the tight spot to prevent damage to cabinet or appliances. Use a small piece of drywall to deflect unwanted heat. Drywall is an excellent material to use as heat shield as it does not burn easily. Good luck!

    If you are heating the tiles, protect the cabinet with a scrap piece of drywall as a heat barrier. Once the tiles are off and the glue is still warm, scrap the glue off immediately . Much easier when it is still warm. Good luck and be safe ! Wear safety glasses too.

    Awesome video. I have ceramic tile along the wall on kitchen counter. Whoever installed it, didn't think about people have to clean it up from cook because the tile they installed has rough surface so it would be nightmare to clean when fried oil splashes on it over time. Now I want to remove it and decide whether to choose smooth surface tile instead

    Use scrap piece of drywall for heat shield to avoid damage to cabinet. Use heat gun if you are not comfortable with a torch. Common tiles today is subways tiles . Also . While the tile glue is warm. Scrap the remaining glue off the wall with a wood chisel. Glue gets harder when it is back to normal temperature and much more time consuming to remove it later or sand it off. Take your time and do a small area at a time . Good luck with your project.

    I don’t see why not! All adhesive used for tiles get softer when heating. You can use heat gun if you are not comfortable with open flame. If there is silicon at the corner of the wall. Cut the silicon or remove it before heating silicon . Now.. most older bathroom walls is saturated with moisture over the years, the drywall could be weakened and broken apart as soon as you start removing the tiles. Perhaps replacing the drywall behind the shower tiles make more sense here .

    Wish it was that simple for my job. I have 10mm thick floor tiles used against a wall with cement as the adhesive instead of glue :( I can't get them out without damaging the drywall. Ugh, never hire a tiler from the newspaper >

  • @maniata8869

    Sorry to hear that. The thicker the tiles is, the harder to remove for sure . I am laughing at your comment about never hire tiler from the newspaper . In your case, I would cut along the tile edges at the drywall using oscillating saw tool. Go slow and cut only the drywall. Remove the tiles and drywall in small pieces . Inspect the frame and plastic vapor barrier (reseal if needed) for external wall or bathroom walls. Replace new drywall or use plywood (same drywall thickness) , then install new tiles over . Good luck with your project .

    @@maniata8869 I got the tiles off with a chisel and hammer, took most of the drywall with it, but, fortunately there will be cabinets going right over the top so I can hide all of my mess :)

    Just spent 2 hours removing backsplash tile - small 3" by 3" squares - a large area - applied as a tall backsplash to the drywall as follows: 1) the installer, years ago, used a nylon mesh to add strength to the backsplash tiles, probably for longevity - to keep them there a long time 2) the nylon mesh was embedded in concrete/mortar It pulled off the drywall top paper layer and the gypsum underneath that paper and there was no way to save that drywall. For expediency, we said "it's going to go a lot faster to ignore any damage done to the drywall behind the tile+nylon mesh+concrete - we'll just hang new drywall The demo went fast knowing we couldn't save the drywall. I've done other demo jobs were we DID manage to save the drywall behind the backsplash tile. It was just in this case, the installer years ago fully intended "this drywall tile I'm installing is not going to come off unexpectedly!" Dang it. I would have told the guy "look - places get updated and remodeled all the time - don't make the freaking backsplash tile some kind of mission-critical NASA space shuttle tiles effort, would ya please" . .

    I would do with any tile with adhesive secure to the wall. (No cement ). Please be careful with heat source around cabinet and have water spray bottle beside you . I also used old piece of drywall as a shield if I need to put the heat source near the cabinet . It don’t use heat source several inches away from anything that is sensitive high heat . Best of luck and thanks for the comment here .

    How long did you heat each tile?

  • @maniata8869

    @maniata8869

    Hard to say how long depend on tile size and length. For my tiles, I heat just a few tiles at a time and about 1 min or less. You can tell with you put the chisel under that it is easy to remove.
