    Thanks for a great video. My mtd 38" deck only has 1 idler, but with your help I was able to get a new belt on and since I had the deck down I discovered a thick layer of grass stuck to the bottom of the deck. I had been spraying water under the deck with blades running thinking I was getting it clean, but when I got the gunk off I discovered many areas with major rust layers. Glad to find this before it rusted through. This fall I'll drop the deck and weld some metal over the areas that were rusted bad. Thanks again, you saved me a lot of time and extra elbow grease. Btw, you are very good at explaining things in a very understanding way!

    I just purchased a mtd that has a 38 inch deck seemed to be a mower that came with a 42 in deck assuming it's been replaced I noticed that my deck has only 3 pulleys on the deck and yours has 4 also mine doesn't have wheels on the front of the deck but the issue I'm having is getting the correct belt size for the deck the one I ran seemed to be to long but the shorter one was too tight and kept the blades engaged and would not let the motor start

    In my opinion, I think it would be so much easier to just take the whole deck out held by like 6 pins, pull the deck out, change the belt a lot easier with a lot more space, and put the deck back into place with the pins.

  • @TightWadDIY

    It sounds like you have an issue with your PTO relay switch being stuck ON. The easiest way to remove the blades is with an impact wrench. Otherwise you need to find a way to prevent the blades from spinning while you use a regular socket wrench. I've used a 2x4 to wedge the blades so they won't spin before but be very careful. The blades could spin and cut you or worse.

    Dj Mann did you buy an OEM belt from MTD? If not, it may not be exactly the correct size. The only other think is that the tensioner pulley spring could be bad.

  • @NoStringsAttached777
    @NoStringsAttached7775 жыл бұрын

    Bit puzzled about how you were able to install the deck belt without releasing the tension on the tensioner pulley. The spring on my MTD is very strong and there is no way the belt will go on without completely compressing the spring tensioner setup somehow. Previously I have used a 1 metre length of steam pipe and grunted the belt over the upper lip of one of the blade pulleys having the rest of the belt in place as it should be.What I am doing there is levering the tensioner closer in making the smallest possible circuit for the belt which allows it slip over and into the pulley.I was looking for a better way of installing the belt after replacing a blade pulley and blade pulley spindle shaft.

    NoStringsAttached It shouldn’t be that tight when the PTO isn’t engaged. I think your belt is too short. I always suggest buying OEM belts. Many aftermarket companies sell belts that are close to the correct size but not an exact fit.

  • @TightWadDIY

    kelsey moe There is no way to safely tighten the belt. If it’s loose, you need a new one. I always recommend ordering OEM belts so they are the exact length needed. If you don’t buy OEM, at least buy from a reputable company. Cheaper is not better when it comes to belts.

    Very good video but you didn't take the deck out I need to know how to put that spring back on

    I would only remove the deck if I had to work on the deck itself. The spring goes into the hole on the side of the frame. I use a string to pull it.

    Is the belt supposed to be a little loose?

    J Sali It should be loose until you engage the PTO, then it should tighten up.

    Omar Argullin Yes. My belt was stretched and worn. What is the issue with your mower? I have several repair videos and I can point you to the correct video if you have a different issue.

    artymgysgt Sorry about the volume issue. I am new to this so I will have to play with the iMovie settings to see about increasing the audio. I have videos for how to replace all three belts. The other two can be found here. Lower Drive Belt: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWVpprtvds6plag.html Upper Drive Belt: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWZkrJiFoqvNfZs.html
