Tighten the Blade Belt and Level the Deck Riding Mower Lawn Tractor Craftsman Murry

Ойын-сауық

In this video I will show you how to save time and money by fixing this loose belt yourself on your riding mower. Just loosen the jam nut on the linkage as shown in the video. Then unscrew the piece on the end of the linkage and keep checking till the belt is tight. Now tighten the jam nut.

    I've owned my Craftsman mower for at least 25 years... all that time, I have changed several mower belts and only 1 drive belt... not too complicated. Several times I replaced the deck belt during the season because it had gotten loose. I looked in my owners' manual and online for the correct method of tightening the belt. I suspected the rod you pointed out was the correct one, and thank you for confirming what I wanted to know for 25 years !

    Good vid and well explained Van! You just saved someone a nice chunk of money who won't have to pay out for a trip to a shop or a service call to the house! At my age when I have to mess with the decks on the Cub or Craftsman anymore I drive the front tires up on car ramps and jack up the back end with a floor lack and a short pc. of 4x4 then set jack stands under the rear so I don't have to get all the way down on the ground anymore. Just came up with that recently after my surgery not to mention I probably have close to 20 years on ya - lol

    HELP! So I have been scouring for parts manuals and videos and yours is the closest I can find. I have a old craftsman riding lawn tractor 4000. The place you are pointing at 3:01 is where the tension rod connects. The up and down piece. WHAT IS THAT CALLED? I was mowing my grass and it suddenly stopped engaging. The belt was replaced near the end of last season and it is fine. Initially, I thought my motor pully froze but it was moving. When I looked up how to tension the belt I thought I had it licked, but when I looked at my mower that up-and-down piece is snapped. Is that something that can be repaired or is it something that needs to be sautered back together?

    My belt keeps dropping off during use. I found it crosses over the idle arm(?) that runs from tension pully to a bracket behind the outside pully on side opposite of shoot (?) where grass clippings blow out. I took pully off to get to adjustment. It helped a little but belt still falls off. I am thinking where the belt runs from one side to other at back if deck is rubbing on that arm that gies across from idle pully to the bracket it sits in the tightens belt when engaged. Do I need to tighten this nut on that arm up more?

  • @VansWorld

    @VansWorld

    3 жыл бұрын

    It’s hard to say without seeing it. Most of the time the problem is a stretched out belt that needs replaced. The linkage and rods shouldn’t be an issue unless the deck had a hard impact that could have bent something. There should be a good diagram of the belt routing. Check that. Also there should be brackets that run beside the pulleys. They keep the belt from falling off when not engaged. Sometimes they get bent and need to be bent back into place. I hope this helps 👍😁

  • @madmanmechanic8847

    If your pivot for your adjusting rod it threaded it makes it very difficult to get the right tension on the belt , Because you have to remove the the keeper then the pivot and pull the rod of and turn the pivot and hope you have the right tension on the belt but if you have to tighten the adjustment to get better tension then you are fighting it to get it back in the hole. I have been working on my deck and could not get the proper belt I had to buy a standard v belt because Homo Depot cut down their belts to half of what they had and I can no longer get the proper belt . they used to stock . I took the box down there with the part number and was told no longer carried in store. So now I have to figure out how to tighten the adjustment and fight to get it back in the hole for engagement I got 5 acres of weeds to cut If they hadnt threaded the pivot and just put two nuts on there so you could adjust the rod in place and get proper tension would of been a better design instead of having to take it off and on I think I am going to have to ream out the pivot and put on two jam nuts to I can adjust it in place there is very little room in there as you know

    I'm having the opposite problem. My belt dry rotted off and now the new one I bought seems just too small, could it be that adjustment is too tight? I just cant get it on one of the outside pulleys

    I had the problem before. Does your mower show the belt diagram? My diagram was under where my right foot sits Underneath the mower. And they actually sold me the wrong size before. See if you can find your owners manual for the belt part number. Good luck and have a great week. 👍😁

    In your video you pointed out a pulley which has nothing to do with tensioning the belt. My Craftsman has a cable controlling the tensioner pulley.

    They are not all the same. There are the ones with an electric PTO clutch,to engage the belt drive and require a constant belt tension and the others that are a manual/mechanical belt drive engagement.

    I purchased a new deck belt for my craftsman mower... the store sold me a deck belt that was 1" shorter than the belt I took off... when I installed the new belt... I cranked the mower, but the blades began to turn even though I had not engaged the handle .... will loosening the tension rod put slack onto the belt, preventing it from turning before the belt handle is engaged ?

    My Sears LT 4000 2 blade mower, the blades are not aligned so it does not cut even. One is not parallel to the other and it is lower. The spindles mount to the bottom side of the deck and the only way I see to level is either to bend the deck at the mounting holes or trim the spindle bolting legs. Do you have any suggestions?

  • @VansWorld

    @VansWorld

    5 жыл бұрын

    Im not sure about that. one of my blades was bent one time. It caused it to not cut level. It wasn't off by much. Try a new set of blades. And make sure your tire pressure is equal in the front tires as well as the back tires.. Great question. Thanks for asking. Hope this helps. Have a great weekend.

    Thanks Van, I checked tires and blades. I have tried sucking the deck up at the spindle mounting holes with a strong back and jack bolts, but not much luck. What about trimming the spindle legs? I can't find a KZread on this subject.

    Michael Tavary I’m really not sure. My motto is you have to break some eggs to make an omelette. If you feel comfortable trying it. I’d go for it. What’s the worse that could happen? You might have to buy some replacement parts. But you’ll learn something in the process. Please let us know how it turns out. 😁👍 sorry I’m not any more help than that. Have a great week brother.

    if you take the rod loose (which is what you will have to do anyway to turn the piece) then you can use a wrench and not need a deep well. of course i have a deep well but would probably just use a ratchet wrench anyway.

    There should be a bar beside the drive pulley. Just pull down on the belt to get it past the bar. If this doesn’t answer your question the. Let me know and I will try to answer it better. 👍

    You can slide the cable engagement bracket back with a 10mm wrench or take tension spring off that the same cable is attached to and shorten it by torching the end while in a vice to red hot then curling in to itself. Attach that end when cool to the screw side and the cable to the other.
