I'm like you ..that would be a great place to just hang out..read a book..snuggle up and watch tv or a movie. Hanging little white lights or maybe a latern would look good on it.

Just finished building one of those for my daughter, it looks great! The frame size ended up being a little bit bigger than the mattress. I would rather reduce the size by 1 or 2 inches in each direction.

Yes it’s intentionally left a little oversized so that you can more easily put on the bedding and tuck it in 👍

Is the video intro showing the bed I. It’s fully finished state, or before finishing (stain, poly, etc.)? If it’s finished in the intro, what did you use to finish it and how many coats? Thank you @Shara! You’re the best!!!

First your awesome. My friends asked me to make them this bed but they are in the military and move every 3 years. I’m worried if I don’t use some type of screw inserts joinery the screw holes will wear out. But what I can’t figure out is how to use inserts with a pocket hole jig

I’ve never tried inserts, but, you could skip the pocket holes and use some sort of corner bracket and use inserts with those instead of you (they) plan to take it apart and put back together pretty often

How did you manage square joints with no clamps when driving the pocket screws? Impressed

Lots of practice 😉 if your boards have square ends, it’s pretty easy to get square joints when you drive the screws

It really depends on the brand/type of glue and the environment conditions. I’d recommend checking the glue you’re using for recommendations there.

Thank you! But I didn’t start out like this. I’ve slowly added a tool here and there as I needed it over the last few years. Everyone starts somewhere. I encourage you, if you want to start, to start out with one or two tools and get creative. I built a ton of stuff when I first started out with a cheap $30 jig saw and a hammer.

@@WoodshopDiaries how many types of jigs were you using in this vid? I saw a smaller one (the size of a small crayon box, a bit longer though,, then I saw a big one with a handle you were adjusting. I don’t have one, but I want to buy one, or whatever I need for this build.

This is a queen size and it cost about $250 or so.

I’m just about finished building this bed! I’m building the full size for my 3 yo daughter. My only complaint is my own skill! I would have left a bit more than 10.5 inches for the panels to squeeze into the frame, though. I was beating like mad trying to get them in and broke a piece of wood and had to start over on the panel. Also, I’ve never messed with poly so that was a real pain... some of my panels bowed and I just didn’t turn out as good as this. Frustrating, but my own lack of skill. Thanks for answering my questions along the way!

Dont beat yourself up! I’m sure it’s better than you think-we are always our worst critics. But I’m sure you’ve learned in the process and that’s the best part! You learn as you go and that’s all part of the process 😄 next time will be better and it just always gets better as you go. I’m sure your daughter will love it!

@@WoodshopDiaries thanks!! I don’t know how long it’ll take for the poly smell to dissipate, so I’ll leave in our garage for a few days before putting in her room. We took her to pottery barn kids yesterday to pick out all new bedding (sheets, comforter, shams, etc... we didn’t love the choice, but she did. We never let her have this type of control, but it was her birthday present so we told her to pick them out. 🙄. Thanks again!!

Depends on your location and lumber prices where you are. I’d estimate $300 ish

Did you rip all the roundovers off on a table saw prior to building this? Did you make all the cuts before sanding? Just trying to figure out how I'm going to begin. I bought the full size plans today.

I almost always rip my round over edges off on my table saw on my 2x material. However, do keep in mind that the plans don’t account for that. The plans account for using a full 2x4, 2x6, etc. because not everyone has a table saw. If you rip off the edges, you need to account for the difference in the plans. In many cases, it won’t make a difference, but in some cases, it may make a small difference. Also, I sand after cutting, after assembling, before finish and between coats of finish.

Given the dimensions of the plans length and depth, is there really a 6 inch gap on the side and an 8 inch gap on the top/bottom between the mattress and frame? Just want to make sure I understand before I start. I’d like the mattress as flush as possible all the way around 😀

So the overall dimensions aren't the INSIDE dimensions. The inside dimensions for the mattress to fit into are 56" x 80". That allows some wiggle room on all sides of the mattress for the bedding to fit down into. I found leaving the space made switching out and tucking in the bedding MUCH easier. However, if you don't want room for the bedding, one easy way to remove some of this space without changing any dimensions is to attach the bottom section of the side panels flush to the INSIDE of the frame, instead of the OUTSIDE of the frame.

Would you be able list the tools needed to make this? I’m new to all this but very resourceful. Just need to know what I’m looking for exactly. There’s so many different kinds of tools idk where to start looking!

I just went over the steps and directions. There are some discrepancies between the video and the directions. The two front frames - the directions say to use (4) 2x4s between the bottom and top 2x6s. The video shows a 1x4 on the outside and a 2x4 on the inside. This allows you to nail the panel into the 1x4. Also for the back panel the directions tell you to use two 2x4s with a 1x4 sandwiched between them. The video has you using all 1x4s. If you did this according to the directions the panel would not be flush because of the added 1x4 support. Please check my observations but I’m going over this in preparation of building it. Thanks much.

Sue P I just double checked the instructions and they are correct. The front frame uses 2x4s AND 1x4s between the top and bottom boards. The 1x4s go on the far left and right and the 2x4s are towards the center. Also it shows the back frame using 2x4s on the left and right of the frame and a 1x4 board in the center of the frame. The instructions are correct. The diagrams, cut list, and written instructions should help 👍

Thanks for double checking me on this. I went through the instructions and wrote everything down because I’m making a different size. Which reminds me. I need some help. I know you mentioned some theory but I’m old enough to know the guy who figured the theory out! What would be the angle on the 2x4s for the side frames for a full size bed. Instructions said a full size mattress is 54x75. Appreciate your help. Thanks much!

Sue P once you modify the side lengths to fit the mattress you are using, you can use basic trigonometry to figure out the angles and lengths that work for you. An explanation of how to figure the angles are here: www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/trigonometry.html
