DIY Homemade Engine Builder Captures 44 Year-Old Land Speed Record
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun are known for their homemade engines they build from scratch. They have proven their success with over 30 land speed records in the books. Recently, at the 2021 November El Mirage event, Team Aardema/Braun brought home a 44-year-old record which was set back in August of 1977 by Don Carr. In this video you will see driver Cal Rothe make 3 attempts to lock in this record and make history. The vehicle classification is a (E) Fuel Lakester with a 258ci, 4-liter modified Olds Rocket V8 engine built by Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun. This unique one-of-a-kind engine has a 2.7” inch stroke with a 3.9” inch bore and has been heavily modified and adapted with Corvette ZR1 LT5 Quad cam cylinder heads. This high revving naturally aspirated engine makes 553 HP on gasoline and 682 HP with a 100 shot of nitrous oxide. Jump in the drivers seat and see first hand how talented old school gear heads work together as a team to capture a new land speed record of 226 MPH!

What a wild ride! I was correcting the steering the whole way down the track and could not wait to blow out the parachute. I am honored to be part of the team. And Greg, with out you, no one would know our adventures!

Congratulations Cal! That was some very impressive driving! You have a big fan in Florida brother!
Several years ago I tracked Pete Aardema down because I had heard of his efforts with Cosworth Pontiac Super Duty cylinder heads. He's a super nice guy who took a good 30 minutes out of his day to talk with a complete stranger and shared what he could about the engine. Cool guy.
Love watching these blokes with their can-do attitude. Small budget racers who get records with wisdom and hard work ! Team Aardema and Braun I salute you ☺🦘
The old man has jet engines, streamliners and a monster truck. I like him already.

The in cockpit video was just great watching him gently steer out of trouble. I'll bet 90% of drivers don't know how to steer out of a slide. When I was in high school in the 60's the first snow of the year would find me and my buddies out practicing our 4 wheel drifts in our 49-50 Fords and Chevies. Being an avid skier those early learned skills have served me well over the years. Well over a thousand trips to and from the ski areas with no wrecks. I've driven past many hundreds of people in the ditch (usually 4X4's).

You know, as a western Canadian road racer, I'd have to agree with you. The shining contrast to that is when the Americans used to come across the border. I've personally experienced a complete group effort from them when my car had major issues, and I was throwing in the towel. Five complete foreign strangers swarmed around my car assessing, and then springing into action to get me back on track. Not a single local racer, including the one pitted the next stall over, even stopped in. I've heard similar experinces by two friends, one is a road racer, the other a bike road racer. both prefer either US sanctioned Canadian events or going across the line to race in the states. So my hats off to all you Americans.
Many a man/woman has spent many an hour tinkering in their shed/garage, thinking, trying, tuning, starting again. But that is what chasing a dream is all about, the passion, the love of it all. One man, two or more, same dream, to go faster than any before them. May these dreams live on and many a record keep getting chased and broken.

What's even crazier is the fact the car had more to go.... Congratulations!!!
The sheer excitement I get from seeing a man's face of that age, light up like a pro tree at nationals, is awesome.
You can never keep a true professional team down Brilliant just brilliant.
This was amazing to watch. The knowledge combined of the men on camera here is something to witness and a privilege...Thank You!
I had a 72 Oldsmobile Cuttlas with the 350 Rocket engine! It was great as is, better once bored and stroked, but this guy souped one up to the freaking max!
A home made engine that makes good power is an achievement in itself.

How odd, I was looking for a old friend on YT "Don Carr" and I found this. I worked with Don at a Oldsmobile dealership from '79-85, he managed the garage at the time as well as ran his lakester with Barry Kaplan. great guys, always had time to teach others and explain how things worked. I saw him a few years later, early 90's or so and he was learning the priesthood. Had sold the truck & lakester and was moving on with life. I hope he's doing well these days.

Gotta love drivers. He’s like “yeah yeah shut the canopy so I can rip this bitch”. Finding someone who can actually drive and do the job ain’t easy. Plenty of people can run the car down the track but not many keep the throttle pinned when the nitrous throws the he car sideways at speed. Lol

Your right about that! Both Drivers Cal and Scott know how to drive. Prior to Cal's last run there were several high speed spinouts at this last event. One of the cars rolled at high speed. Thanks for watching! Greg
That was a wild ride. Looked like he was drifting for most of the course.
Congratulations, one could spend a lifetime dreaming of such an achievement or one can get up and do it, you’re part of a very exclusive group of rare breeds. I hope this year will be my year to ‘do it’ too.

What's really cool is hearing the sound of the engine at nearly 10,000 RPM screaming down the course!
Really cool video though sweet car
A streamliner with a scratch built engine made with many already existing parts joined by fabricated assemblies, displacing 258 cubic inches and turning 10 grand. Producing enough power to spin the tires at speed when the nitrous kicks in, beats 44 yr old record by a slim margin while displaying the ability to go even faster in a time when production streetcars ( albeit very few and massively expensive ) can top 250. Got all that. What I didn't get, what was the actual record ( class and specs ) that they broke ? AWESOME JOB THOUGH guys, loved seeing most of it, verry impressive
@garycook3943

I guess because this record is on dirt on a 1.3 mile track? How much space does a Veyron need on dirt?
great content , you found interesting engines , everything usually on us based channels is LS all the things , k series that or cummings etc etc .. keep up with finding unique drive trains :)
What record exactly? Rules for the record? Standing start across a measured distance? Speed through the traps? Why no backup run the opposite direction?
@alexjenner1108
2 жыл бұрын
On a long track like Bonneville you can run according to FIA rules which means flying km or flying mile and second run in the other direction. There are also SCTA and other rules this appears to be a shorter track and timed over a shorter distance and maybe no backup run either.
Congratulations

Anything that turns 9k RPM is cool as hell in my book, but if it's an engine you built yourself that's gotta be even sweeter. I love this thing.

Genuinely enjoyed your video ! Especially the trip down memory lane of nostalgia speed record attempt cars ! If I had to guess, I would imagine that you have been swamped by requests for information on the location of them. Here is my question, ( actually, a comment first ) I am paralyzed from my shoulders down, and have always had an interest in owning a land speed record car ! Would you have any knowledge of if this gentleman would have interest in parting from any one of them ? I would be extremely interested in doing a full restoration on one of them ! Especially a streamliner ! Looking forward to hearing from you, to know if there would be any further information on them !!! Thanks again !
You could lead out with what record they were trying to break.
