Try adding a little sulfur to your mix. You're essentially making black powder with sugar instead of charcoal, but the chemistry is the same. Sulfur lowers the ignition point, and increases your burn rate, up to a certain point. You can get sulfur at any store like Lowe's in lawn & garden.

@@glbaker5595 they've always been restricted based on whether or not there was a delay mechanism. You could have grenade style smoke bombs as long as they started smoking as soon as the mechanism activated. I've not seen anything about the new version other than "smoke grenades a now illegal" There's no definition of what constitutes a smoke grenade and exactly where the line is now drawn. The strictest reading would outlaw even the classic match lit smoke bombs as the basest definition would be "hand throwable pyrotechnic or explosive devise" Personally I think they were just restating current law in such a manner as to make it sound more restrictive than it is for the benefit of foreign vistors

I really don't want to be the Safety Susan on the block, but I have some personal experience to share that you might want to consider. You often hear rotary tools and gloves don't go together. I learnt that the hard way in EXACTLY the same situation as you put yourself in for this video: using a disc on an angle grinder while holding the object you're grinding in your hand. And just like you, I used heavy duty leather gloves... The edge of the glove barely touched the disc, and it got pulled in, resulting in a deep gash in my finger. Just that fraction of a second was enough to cut the flesh down to the bone. "Luckily" it was the side of my thumb, right next to the fingernail, where no important muscles or tendons pass. And luckily my reflex pulled away in the right direction so that it didn't cut any deeper. There was also barely any blood because the speed burnt all the flesh and vessels shut. You can imagine that it could have very easily been a lot worse. So message to you, or to anyone who turns to KZread videos to learn DIY practices: whenever working with rotary tools, use thin latex gloves, or no gloves at all. It's better to have a burn or a splinter or a dirty hand, than having only half a hand. Or like one of my best youth buddies always said: better having one bird in your hand, than no hand.

@@niccosaur7778 sorry to break it to you, but having 20 years of sheer luck does not exempt you from accidents. My accident was NOT a wire wheel. It was just a regular metal grinding disc. There's a fiber glass mesh in it to hold the abrasive and it must have been one of those poking out that pulled my glove in. My reason for wearing gloves was so that I wouldn't burn myself holding the item (which was stupid, because one should always just clamp it down and have both hands on the grinder, especially the high rpm grinder I was using - the gyroscopy on the thing is bananas), and perhaps I thought that I would be safer somehow. Give me the reasoning why you think you need leather gloves and what they are protecting against.

You can get individual stretchy pouches that conform to different grenade sizes, same as you used to get with universal phone pouches back in the day, can't remember the name for the stretchy part but rubber string is used. Also, if your going to this much effort to make HMSG's for say Airsoft/Paintball, (considering how expensive that can be), you might as well pay someone with a sewing machine to make your pouches for you and / or a pouch bag speciffically for the HMSG's. Alternatively, you could get them to make a HMSG belt like you would have for shotgun carts but instead be big enough for HMSG's and can also add in the feature of having the belt hold removable pouches if you wanted to move them to a Molle vest or just not carry as many and not carry the belt. If you know someone with a sewing machine, all you would really need to pa for is material which they could most likely get cheap for you and then just give em a bit extra money for their time. Edit: Just remember, not all Airsoft/Paintball arenas allow HMSG's or Smoke Grenades in general due to insurance or safety policy or both so always check with the event organiser before going or before taking your SG's on the field. Superglue creates heat when curing and thinner superglued create more heat. Cotton allows the glue to wick out and cure even faster. Cotton also has a relatively low ignition point. That said, I’ve never actually seen it start a fire. Using anything besides “extra thin” should prevent it from happening, and for his purposes medium probably works better anyways.

A few tips for more smoke faster... Surface area. Your granulated mix detonated because there was... 1 too much surface area. 2 to robust a reaction. You can either add an inert compound(sand) to slow the reaction down or use a compound that burns slower and cooler. And instead of granules try casting a hollow compound.this can greatly increase surface area. Also.... Add some paraffin, just enough to make the mix solid at room temp. And your whole mix may mold better warmed up.try putting it in a ziploc and warming in hot water.

I think using oil instead of parafin makes it easier to properly mix it beforehand, keeping the whole thing more homogenous during the burn. And if you have to heat up the parafin for the initial mix, I'd say I don't like heating things up that are intended to make a self-sustaining burn, even if it's at a much lower temperature than the ignition temperature. If you want to see how crazy parafin can behave, make a pyramid of lit tea lights 3 levels high (so 10 tea lights in total) in the middle of a large fire resistant surface, perhaps for demonstration, put a wooden board under the tealights. Sit back and enjoy the show. It'll start slow, but give it a few minutes.

@@InventionIncarnate The way that I did it, for what it's worth, was to melt the wax at a low temperature and then slow stir in the ingredients. Which were already throughly blended. Once it was all mixed I'd stir for a minute or two longer and then put the mix in the container. Once in the container, stir every once in a while which will prevent the solids from sinking to the bottom. Once the consistency is like glue paste, a 1/2" dowel was inserted in the center. After solidification was complete the top was covered in armstrong's putty and when that was mostly set the dowel removed. The whole in the middle was filled with a 50/50 mix of powdered sugar and kno3 with a fuse. The top was sealed with a melted together 50/50 mix. an older experiment, but pretty consistent with the results of the final product. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kWV_j7yCj9uwg9I.html

What did you use as your potassium nitrate source and powdered sugar or granulated?

Seems like it would be more convenient to just have a dowel or something in there, an arbor, to maintain a channel in the center for the ignitor which you can then just remove the dowel and screw in after the plaster is set in the headspace.

You can also add food colouring to your mixture to get different colours if you wanna use Smoke Grenade for SOS signals/Search & Rescue Landing Signals if you get into trouble while hiking or in remote areas and can let emergency services know what colour your smoke is so they know its you and not someone else playing around if your in an Airsoft/Paintball field. For example, if a few of you have white smoke grenades and each of you carry a red one then people will know that the red one means your in trouble/injured.

You bet! I was going to make that as a different video. These screening smoke grenades use potassium nitrate as an oxidizer which burns too hot for solvent dyes. They decompose and the smoke 💨 is dull and ugly. Potassium Chlorate is the preferred oxidizer for colored smokes because it burns much cooler and disperses vibrant color especially when the reaction is further cooled via bicarbonates. Military colored smokes use potassium chlorate, sugar, magnesium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and solvent dyes and some colors have a solvent dye decomposition ratio of as low as 3% If I just added that dye to this composition, nearly all of it would decompose on its way out of the canister.

That is a great reaction and if you can speed it up about 400% so that you can eject all of that volume of smoke in 1/4 of the time then you will have something that burns for about 30 seconds and that will be approaching a military smoke grenade but the reaction has to speed up so the fog is more dense because the military smoke grenade can pump out so much smoke you even with a pretty good wind you cannot see through it.

The military uses a phosphorus compound for their smoke grenades. The resulting smoke produces phosphoric acid on contact with water, so it can be pretty irritating to the eyes and lungs. Using the materials he had here, he needs to be careful with increasing the burn rate. Get it going too hot, and you may accidentally start some fires.

I think you will be impressed. It also slows the burn. Maybe try adding some mineral oil to my wax mixture…. It might be even better. I also have one I haven’t tested yet that I added chilli pepper to in order to see if I could add a mace / CS gas type irritant to the smoke so if your enemy tries to advance through your smoke barrier it will make their eyes water and irritate their lungs like mace so they can’t see or breath well wich would take them out of the fight ?? Using the wax will slow the rate of burn so you get a longer thicker smoke.
