DIY Generator Enclosure Shed With Remote Start

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My goal was to build a generator enclosure that would not only protect my generator but also let me start and run it from the comfort of my home without having to plug anything in or drag it out of the garage. I am very happy with the result so far. The shed I used was the Keter Store-It-Out model because it was the cheapest and was just big enough and deep enough to fit my generator. We have used the kzread.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I must agree with Clint Singer. This is by far one of the best generator setups I've seen so far. I had no idea that a remote start was possible. I must add this to my setup. Great video and info. Thank you.

I was going to do something similar with the remote start. I wasn't sure how to do the choke, but you've shown me how to overcome that. Love the idea of the temperature shut down. About the only thing left now is the Fuel and oil levels. Thanks for a really informative video. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

This is very cool and a real good start to a awesome system. I recently just bought a house up in the mountains of Pennsylvania and power comes and goes. I just bought a 4500 watt generator for much less than 100 dollars. It’s all I have right now when the power goes out but with my electric baseboard heat I should be enough. I’m single with 2 friends living with me and my 2 dogs. I have no problem manually switching circuits and being the only house in my community with power haha. It seems you have 10000 watts and that’s awesome but my porch light is always on when the power goes out lol

I am a generator tech. I used to work for a Kohler dealer. Yours is a nice manual setup that didn't cost 6K. Now I work for a Cat dealer and never see residential anymore. Nice job on the setup and everything you've done electrically. I would however offer one piece of advice that will help your generator stay cooler with much better airflow inside the box, which of course will reduce the heat tremendously. 1 - remove the top rear inlet vent and seal it off completely. 2 - reduce the size of the bottom vent by about 1/2 the size. (I'd also add a screen under this vent to prevent bugs & stuff from being sucked into the box). The reasoning is that the intake air will be sucked in much faster and will swirl around inside the box creating a turbo effect and will push the air through the outlet vent with great pressure. This will cool down the generator a lot and increase it's lifespan.

@@ellenrobison9717 what he is suggesting will force cold air into the unit by the fan more efficiently. Hot air rises so the having the fan up high is great but to get better cold air intake he can remove the top vent and it will make it pull better. Hope that makes sense.

I am coping your idea. I already have the generator and have already connected to my breaker box with a disconnect and generator cord. Mine will only be 30 amps at this point because my generator only goes up to 30 amps 240V. We used our generator during the freeze here in Texas and powered the whole house with no problem (gas furnace). I also bought the tri fuel carb and installed last Sunday and it runs like a champ. Thanks a bunch for your video.

How does a resin enclose, especially of this size hold up from the heat of a generator? Just put up a 7X7 ft resin shed, dedicated to house my 9300 dual-fuel generator. Lined inside with cement Hardie backerboard due to heat concerns, which should do the trick. Installed gable vents on each side with a gable attic fan for air-outtake. Only thing left is to install my generator exhaust system, I don't want to weld nor use a magnet, and instead of pipe, I bought aluminum flex (not the dryer vent with plastic & foil!) which is rated at 100-400 degrees Fahrenheit, just not sure how hot the exhaust gets using the propane option (?)

Love the concept, looking to do something similar myself. Couple of things I want to add though. 1. Should be using 6/3 instead of 8/3 for the 50A plug. 2. Depending on how you’re connecting to your main panel, you don’t necessarily need the ground rod.

The generator cannot even put out more than 30 amps. It doesn't matter that it's a 50amp plug since the breaker is a 30amp on the generator itself. The ground rod is not necessary per code and was done only because the generator manual said too, but this is an old video and I did remove the ground.

I used a 18x18 return air vent with a permanent filter for the intake and I got a 12000w generator but I'm using propane for fuel and I have a second shed with two 100 lb. Propane cylinders. During the snowstorm of 2021 in Texas I found it impossible to travel, and most importantly impossible to purchase gasoline because no power no pumps. Amazing job. The only detail I would add, is that, unless you run your generator often, a gas generator should be shut off by shutting the gas line off via the shut off valve while running and letting it run out of gas. If gas is let to stand in its small carburetor for any length of time, you may need to take the carburetor apart and clean it with carburetor cleaner to get it to restart. I did that to my 4000 W gas generator, and left it off for 4 years, and I was amazed that it started after a couple of pulls.

VERY nicely done! If I may ask, what is the fuel tank capacity of your particular 10,000 KW generator, and approximately how long can it run non-stop on a full tank of gasoline?

According to the Duromax website, the 10000E has a 8.3 gallon capacity and will run approx. 8 hours @ 50% load.

I have a question, I’m enclosing my generator in the same fashion. I’m concerned about the exhaust I was going to see if I could get a flange to mount onto the exhaust port then flex pipe out. How did you mount the black pipe exhaust.

Welded it to the muffler. It has an air gap where it exits the box.

Great build! I see that some people have problems with the exhaust fans failing causing a potential fire hazard, How would you install a shutdown switch on maybe the louvers if the fan should fail the unit would shut down. Thanks

A simple temperature switch that closes the circuit when it reaches whatever temp you want. Connect it to the coil input and when this generators coil is grounded it shuts down. That's exactly what the key switch does. It ground out the coil when it is in the off position to keep it from running. Very simple.

hats off to you sir that is crazy smart what you did. How did you connect your exhaust pipe to the generator? I have the shed and everything else set up but just not the exhaust because I don't know how to connect it to the generator. Thank you.

Just wondering what kind of ambient temperatures you are seeing in the enclosure when running? I more or less built the same Keter Store-It-Out unit for the duromax 13000. Completed my first run with it enclosed and it seemed pretty warm. Going to measure with an infrared thermometer, just curios if you had anything to provide from an expectation. Nice build!

I haven't studied the temps but with this Dan they stay relatively low. On extremely nhot summer days it will start to feel like a car engine bay in there. No problems so far though

You remind me of me. That’s a compliment. I probably would have went with a Arduino microcontroller and would have way over engineered it lol. Brilliant with the choke automation!

did you add a sound deadening sheet between the outer wall and the insulation? I like your solar charger. That is up to date. Have you considered putting adhesive backed foam strips on the metal exhaust vents where metal meets metal. As your neighbor I would appreciate anything you can do to reduce the noise level into my bedroom at 3 AM. My neighbors did that to me. Just something to consider. Less noise for me and you. I know it is a pain to do all of this stuff and you probably just overlooked that after doing all of the other great things you did to your setup. Cool way to do the choke. I saw one guy who actually put a drop down front door on his so he could roll the generator into the enclosure. That was also a nice touch. I like it.

Not sure what else I could have done to isolate the sound. I don't have neighbors so I don't care about that but I do care about myself being able to sleep and I can't even here the generator running from my bedroom just FYI.

@@captseamus ...and are portable/removeable in case the enclosure needs moving/replacing etc I personally will probably use a used but in good condition AC condenser riser I have curb picked, fasten a cement floor board to it, then fasten the enclosure to it and will drill out a hole for the ground pole. (The enclosure panels will also be fastened together with additional L-brackets)
