I'm a 77 year old male and live alone and can not sew at all. The number of virus cases increase daily in the county I live in. This mask is the easiest and most comfortable mask to make and wear. Jan you have an excellent presentation and I want to thank you for showing everyone how to make such a nice mask.

This is really cool but believe me when I tell you there’s no way anyone is gonna handle more than 10 minutes walking around with mask on, it’s way too tight, plus the fabric makes a lot of difference in how well you breathe, and if you get a really thing fabric then you might as well walk around without a mask in the first place, there needs to be some kind of filter or space so you can properly breathe with those just an advice

@@clemenciamorales6220 Studies said a decent tight knit, double-layered, could reduce your chances between 50-75 %. We're not trying to make N-95 here, we're trying to slow the rate at which ppl fall ill & not everyone will have filters. This is a great option. Don't be such a debbie-downer. You're just creating more anxiety and panic when you're nothing but negative. Next time, lead with the positive and then say, "in addition to that, to make it more effective, you can place a filter in it as well." & then give researched examples of some. Because if you're not going to help in the edification of others, you're just wasting their time. Like you did just now.

Black for daddy .We need to use 3 layers. 1st cotton 2nd is for filter piece (u can use same material as coffee fliter ) then another thin cotton. Or use the baby clothes(Salo) or Muslin cotton 2 layers that are more effective of preventing germ than regular cotton or polyester. Cheer up everyone from Thailand.

This is the best fitting mask I have EVER worn in my 27 years of having to wear them for work! I hate the straps around my ears and I just could never get them to fit properly. I have a tiny head and face so the sinching of the material on the side ensures that I don't get the gapping either.... Seriously love this mask.... I'm sure you could find a way to sew this as well but for now it's a great idea. You should patten it right now!

I was skeptical but, needed an easy method and also a comfortable fit. This was the very best mask I've made. I bought 3 types and made one hand sewn all were sweaty, uncomfortable on nose and ears or rubbed too close to my eyes. So $80 later and lots of frustration. I made this for $1 with a xxl adult tee from Dollar Tree. Ty for sharing this and presenting it so clearly. This is so well fitting and so soft and comfortable and easy. Can adjust as needed I add 2 thin disposable layers of Toolbox disposable shop towels making this higher protection then a N95 mask. How clever you are! Blessings!

@Bar Rez An N95 mask (or even a P100 mask, for that matter) can provide no more protection than an ordinary surgical mask without passing the OSHA mandated face seal check that must be performed prior to each wearing. Do the shop towels really stick so well to both the skin and the mask that they can actually provide an effective air tight face seal? (Certainly none of the earlooped "NK95" masks you're seeing all over the place nowadays do - some of which barely test out as equivalent to "N10" (if there were such a thing), or even "N05", many due merely to their use of earloops instead of headbands that can be tightened securely enough to assure an effective seal.

My wife, daughter and I each made some of these this past weekend. It was super fun, and you're right, Jan, these are SO COMFY. I took an old t-shirt that was very soft, and it turned out its fabric was so good for this that my wife cut some of that shirt to use on her mask, for straps. She suggested we glue-gun the straps to the mask, and we put a couple of beads on the folds too. It keeps everything together so we can just grab the masks and go. The glue is not required, of course, but it was an added touch. I wore the mask on my 1/2 hour bike ride and it was comfortable the whole time. Thanks so much for this great DIY recipie, Jan!

Thank you Jan. I used my sewing machine to secure the layers and someone without a machine could hand sew, pin or even staple in place. I made a mask out of a short sleeve and added a third inner layer of something and I love it the best after sewing pleated masks with attaching elastic, etc! Now I just tell my family to give me an old tshirt and I will come back with several masks.

My thoughts exactly..even some super glue on the folds would stop it from falling apart. I'm clumsy and talk a lot. Thin pieces of polyester inside would be best. As it would be reusable and less absorbent. You are trying to make a near waterproof barrier. Maybe a poly blend with cotton. Wear glasses as goggles!

Michelle Weagle it’s definitely a good starting point but unfortunately doesn’t offer hardly any protection on its own. I’ve been using a super wide stretchy headband myself for running but doubled over AND with an additional more protective layer underneath. The headband makes a great outer layer for running - or just in general - as I find it super comfy but do add something else underneath the area that goes over your nose & mask. Stay well!🔆

You're a genius!! Thank you, Jan!! I make a couple of adaptions (1) I left the bottom hem, cut a little slit on the inside of the hem pocket and inserted a folded-in-half pipe cleaner to make a nose piece. (2) I did not cut the sides of the shirt, so it was like a tube. That allowed it to be double thickness, and then I inserted a coffee filter between the two layers. I'v read that coffee filters can possible add a layer of protection. Thank you for making a comfortable, simple, no-sew option for us to follow!!! The best one for me!!

PROS: it is easy to make and very comfortable CONS: I tried wearing it for an hour and if you pull it down just once it starts to come apart. By the end of my walk it came undone and I had to take it off. If you can sew a little, just sew the top (nose area) where the fabric is folded over itself. I think this will keep it together longer. Be sure to test it before going into a crowded, public place.

Use a short sleeve shirt. I cut above the shoulder seam so the hemmed shoulder seam side will be the top. Lay the sleeve flat with the under arm seam in the middle for the back. Put your ties thru the sides as shown above and I like to hot glue the overlaps. Then, one step further. If you can get these, www.staples.com/OIC-2-Piece-Prong-Fasteners-Base-Only-2-3-4-Center-to-Center-1-Capacity/product_378818?cid=PS:GooglePLAs:378818&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=378818&KPID=378818&gclid=CjwKCAjwkPX0BRBKEiwA7THxiGx2gzIYCdeW10B6dPkvVlTkA0Bo5yzmOAhupSOSiItKFheXbXYvjRoCGA0QAvD_BwE , you can use hot glue gun to put these at the top to fit your nose. They're very flexible and comfortable but allow you to fit on your nose better making a better seal.

I just made 7 of these with only two of my sons t-shirts and a pair of scissors. They're way more comfortable than any of the other masks I have tried. I can even wear it without it fogging up my glasses! Thank you thank you for this tutorial!

MLC Bean don't make your masks out of cotton material, it can be worse than not wearing one at all. Google it.

@@jerrymontago844 at this point, tho, it's almost seen as the polite thing to do. I know it only stops my own spit from spilling everywhere. But if it calms ppl down and get the governor off my back, I'll wear a tshirt on my face. Plus... I dont have to wear lipstick.

I almost did not try this when I saw the fancy graph paper and rotary cutter! I had to watch this several times to get the hang of it but after a half hour I have 4 face masks off to my daughter and family. If you want to make a wire to form around the nose I was able to get :chenille stems"( 100 pieces for $2) in the school/craft section of my local CVS next to the popcicle sticks. You could put it under the rolled edge at the top of the mask. The craft stores are closed here. They don't call them pipe cleaners any more. Now I will try the sleeve one. Thank you so much Jan!

Your a lifesaver to me. Ive gotten instant asthma, contact dermatitis and swollen eyes every time I go out with my blue medical mask. I like the fit on you in the sleeve one!

Just watched your no sew face mask!!!!! Great!! Have been sewing masks here at home until I am blue in the face. Going to switch gears and save wear and tear on my fingers. Nice job Jan!!!!! Have watched so many others and yours is simple and comfy. No reason for anyone NOT to being wearing one!!!!!! "'Wear it don't Share It"

Thank you for your demo! That’s a much better way to make a t-shirt mask than what I was doing. The one thing I have added is one new dryer sheet inbetween 2 used dryer sheets on each side (5 all together), for extra protection. Don’t know if it makes much difference, but it makes me feel safer for some reason.
